I haven't been paying too much attention to things this weekend - I'll catch up tomorrow - it started out as a great weekend and ended up pretty much the same way. The gang on the Yahoo site knows that I started playing in a weekly poker tournament, with the grand prize being a trip to Las Vegas. Tonight was the second semi-final night, with 24 people vying for 8 spots in the final on Wednesday. I had nothing all night, NOTHING...but I managed to hang around to finish 8th. I won 8th with a 3 of clubs on the river to give me trip 3's. I'm in the final 16...don't think I'll pull it off - but Chris Moneymaker probably thought the same thing when he started out in that World Series of Poker tournament a couple of years back.

You may be asking yourself, "What does poker have to do with sports?" I have asked myself the same question...but up here, TSN, the Score and Rogers Sportsnet keeps showing poker - so, it works on this page.

Well, I've been talking about her for a few weeks now - tonight marks her official first post on the blog. The "Peeps" know all about Renee and her views on the world of sports - in particular her views on New England sports...I'm sure you'll find her interesting to say the least. Before I post her entry, I should mention that as with all my posts, Renee's views should not be interpreted as reflecting those of Hazel Mae; furthermore this post has NOT been being commented on or approved by Hazel Mae.

Prez has asked me to start posting my comments and views on the Blog here.

I want to start off with a subject that I hold very dear to me News Babes!

Yes you know those women who are on the nightly news that make us sit through  the violent news
stories - shitty New England weather forecasts and futile efforts of our beloved Boston pro sports
teams.  Why do we sit through that B.S.? Because the girl delvering the info is HOT! Thats why!

NESN has hired without question the SEXIEST woman in New England - HAZEL MAE.

Pretty face,a rockin' kick ass body,and very fun personality. I'm like most of you guys out there
who've fantasized about wondering what Hazel would look like in a bikini or out of one :) ! Here is a
Media Babe newscast team that would have me staying home to watch the news at home every
night wearing nothing but a smile! (I don't wear much at home anyway)...

An interesting day yesterday across the world of sports, some of the more notable things that happened

Edmonton walks into the Motor City and comes out with a 3-2 win - they are going to seal the deal in game 6 and ruin a lot of people's hockey pools;

Albert Pujols hits his 14th HR in the month of April, the most ever...why would anyone pitch to this guy? (reminder, he IS a proud member of Hazel Mae's Hackers in the "peeps" Yahoo pool).

Kevin Mench of the Rangers hits a HR in his seventh straight game...think of Mench's mention here in the same vein as Chris Shelton - likely his only mention.

Matt Leinhart drops way down the NFL board...could he turn to acting?

Cowboys 1st round pick, Bobby Carpenter from Ohio State, looking like a mistake. The assessments on this guy are not good; great physical skills - no instinct for the game. And to think, Renee wanted to see this guy with the Patriots.

Speaking of Renee...I'll be posting her weekend thoughts later; I have to book now. Have a great one peeps!

Late post today after a great night last, I won't bore you with the deets - I'll inflict that story on the Peeps at yahoo site.

I don't even know where to start this morning -

• Montreal is done - the unravelling has begun, look for Carolina to close this one out in six.
  
  
• I figured Dallas would win yesterday, but I still don't see them coming back from this one - Turco and that once air-tight defence look pretty shaky. Colorado closes this one out back at home in game 6.
  
  
• While Buffalo lost last night - it is looking like a homer series. Buffalo will be fine.

Today's picks

I have already picked Jersey to sweep the Rangers - with or without Jagr.

SenaTards 5 - 1 over Tampa - The Lightning are going with Burke tonight, but it won't make a difference after what Tortorella pulled on Thursday - torching Grahame.

Anaheim 3-2 over Calgary - Call it an upset special. I know everything points to a Calgary win - but their inability to scoe leads me to think that one of Anaheim's playmakers wins this one.

Detroit 5-3 over Edmonton - this one is going to go seven, but Detroit wins tonight after splitting in Edmonton (they didn't deserve it, but they got it). Edmonton is still fuming after Lidstrom's goal.

Nashville 4-3 over San Jose - I still like the Sharks to win, but Nashville won't lost tonight, they are too good to lose 4 in a row. Plus, I need another Sharks game for my hockey pool.

EUROPEAN SOCCER
Congratualations go out to Jose Mourinho and Chelsea (aka Portuguese National Team North). They beat Manchester United 3-0 to win their second straight Premiership title. Ricardo Carvalho scored today - give him a Hazie.

More sad news from the world of sports. Former Dodgers reliever Steve Howe was killed when his truck roll over yesterday. This guy had it all in the early 80's, until his career went off-track due to drug and alcohol abuse. He was a rookie of the year in 1980 and won a World Series over the Yankees in 1981. It was kind of sad watching his career wind down...I hope he finds peace.

I've got to book, but stay tuned - Renee has asked me to post an entry for her...remember when I said she's brash and holds nothing back? She asked me not to censor...yikes. I'm not sure how Hazel would feel about this one - if she is checking in. Have a great one peeps.

I'm in a rush today, so to quickly recap last night's news. The Sharks and SenaTards both took 3-1 leads in their series (as I figured) - the Ducks and Wings tied their series at 2. I still think the Oilers and Ducks win these series.

New Jersey 5-2 over New York - The Rangers are done...they know they can't come back. The roll over tonight.

Carolina 5-3 over Montreal - Koivu is out, Montreal is shaken after the O/T loss - the unravelling begins tonight.

Buffalo 4-2 over Philadelphia - Buffalo goes back to outskating Philadelphia tonight - the power play will be the difference tonight.

Dallas 5-3 over Colorado - I can't see Dallas getting swept - though they deserve to be.

My friend Renee has had computer issues with posting here - so she will know email me random thoughts, rants and musings and I will post on her behalf (until she sorts out tech issues). Renee's idea for tonight is a new Boston Red Sox reality tv show - show Renee some love peeps; she writes:

This afternoon the Boston Red Sox and NESN announced a new reality show contest called:

   BE WAKE'S CATCHER!

The show will be hosted by Hazel Mae.

BE WAKE'S CATCHER follows the open audition of thousands of men and women 18-50 who come
to Fenway Park in hopes of becoming Red Sox knuckleball pitcher Tim Wakefield's personal catcher.

The Red Sox are looking for a person who can catch a knuckleball 95%-98% of the time and who can
at least make contact with a major league pitch thrown between 85-95 mph.

Preliminary judges will be: 
-Wally the Green Monster
-knucleball guru Charlie Hough; and
-Red Sox GM Theo Epstein

The top 10 will be judged by Red Sox mgr. Terry Francona,Red Sox interim pitching coach Al Nipper and
Tim Wakefield.

A Moment Of Silence

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Sad news from the world of Canadian broadcasting today - Pat Marsden, Canada's most controversial sports broadcaster passed away at the age of 69, after a battle with lung cancer. Marsden will always be remembered for being outspoken, brash, opinionated and cantankerous - but most of all a regular guy who loved sports and was never awestruck by those he was covering. I am sure that Hazel knows who Pat Marsden is, she probably had the opportunity to bump into the old guy, and probably has a story or two as well.

In other sad news from this past weekend, former Maple Leafs owner Steve Stavro passed away on Sunday. Stavro will have a special place in the hearts of every member of Leaf Nation who remembers what the Maple Leafs were like under Harold Ballard (though we may have been too young to know how bad things really were - I would include Hazel in that group). Stavro rescued a team that had been pretty bad for years and turned the Leafs into a 1st class organization and almost won a Stanley Cup for the city of Toronto.

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. For those of you who are regular or semi-regular readers, and know what Wednesdays are about here, you can skip right over to this weeks newsmakers. For those of you who have happened on this page for the first time, Wednesday entries take a look back at some of the more notable stories making headlines in the world of sports over the last week or so - you know, the stories you love to laugh at. The stories range from the weird and/or whacked, to the downright silly...I have my opinions, but you can judge for yourself where each one fits.

As always, no entry gets published without a special "Hey" going out to Hazel Mae.

On to the newsmakers

NFL

He Got Off The Pot
So Brett Favre who has been in the midst of "deciding his future" with the Packers has finally decided to play this year, even though he doesn't think the Packers will make the playoffs. This represents a 180 degree turn from his earlier statement that he didn't want to play if the Packers weren't going to win. Hmmm Brett says he wants to play for the love of the game - I bet those few million dollars had nothing to do with his decision. To play or not to play...ok I'll play, but we but don't expect much - a ringing endorsement from your leader huh?

File this one under the downright silly - did anyone really think he wasn't going to come back? Of course he was, he just ensured that expectations stay low - and that he isn't roasted this season.


He Didn't Get Off The Pot
The NFL denied Ricky Williams' appeal of his 1 year suspension. The NFL hasn't released details on what the banned substance was - and "a source" claims that it wasn't marijuana. Of course it wasn't - it was all-natural "holistic" medicine. Ricky will respect the decision and vows to be back in 2007 - of course he will; maybe after another pilgrimage to find himself.

Its Ricky Williams - and any story involving him gets filed under the whacked.


The Whizz Was Kicked Off The Pot
The Minnesota Vikings announced that they have terminated the contract of Onterrio "The Whizzinator" Smith. The man who was busted for packing the Whizzinator, was set to return to the Vikings after serving a one year suspension for a substance abuse violation. Don't ask me why...but I say he winds up with Oakland.

From the beginning, the Onterrio Smith story has been downright silly.


The Bears D Just Got Meaner and Tougher
Ricky Manning Jr.'s celebrated debut in bar fighting by signing a 5 year $21 M dollar offer sheet with the Chicago Bears. Seems like Ricky was out on the town on Sunday night and got involved in a dust up - "on his lawyer's advice, he can't talk about his legal business...but he will be happy to tell his side of the story when its all said and done." Why do I hear the Eddie Murphy line "It wudn't me".

You sign a multi-million dollar offer sheet - and you are dumb enough to get into a bar fight? File this one under just plain dumb (which is going to be a new category on Wednesdays).


Remember "Even Vicks 44 D Wouldn't Cure This One"?
Last year I highlighted some trouble Falcons' QB Michael Vick was in - with someone who charged him with knowingly spreading an STD. Seems like Vicks 44D had a cure after all - as the case has been "resolved". Now we can all go back to waiting for little brother Marcus to get in trouble.

Soon To Be Seen On COPS
San Diego Chargers' LB Steve Foley was booked on charges of battery on a police officer and public drunkeness. Seems like Steve had a problem with the fact that police were going to tow his SUV. Drinking and driving - and fighting with the cops.

See? The "dumb" category needs to be added to Wednesday entries.

Wrapping Up Tub Rub
Another former Vikings RB made news last week. Moe Williams, one of the principles involved in Tub Rub (along with Daunte Culpepper) was found guilty of disorderly conduct; the jury acquitted him of two other charges. The story that won't die...who is Brad Johnson going to hand the ball off to this year? I wonder if Moe takes his act to Miami; to replace Ricky, and take that boat out into international waters...

If you have read previous entries on Tub Rub...you know its just plain whacked - the whole damn mess.


Beatin' The Bushes
USC's Reggie Bush is under investigation by the NCAA (Pac-10) - seems like the Association has an issue with the fact that Reggie's family was leasing a $750 K house. Reggie maintains that the whole the thing has been blown out of proportion - the kicker is the house is owned by a guy who wanted to sign Bush to a marketing contract. Bush could lose his Heismann award over this one - NCAA rules say you can't win if you are not eligible to play.

I don't know where to put this one...but how could he not know that he and his family would be under a microscope? We'll put it under weird - because its all coming out after he declared for the draft.

Dumb Is Now Officially A Wednesday Category
I wonder what Hazel would say about this one. Former Cardinals/Mets 1B Keith Hernandez is in some trouble for comments he made about the San Diego Padres having a female serving as their massage therapist and sitting in the dugout. Just read it...once you do, no explanation needed.

Just plain dumb.


EUROPEAN SOCCER

You May Think He Got Off The Pot
French International Zinedine Zidane announced that he will retire after the 2006 World Cup in Germany (to be won by Portugal..right Hazel?). He says that he wants Real to focus on getting better - attracting new players to replace him, because he hasn't played to his level in two years. Funny...he admits that now, yet he let my man Figo be the fall guy last season. Zidane has pulled this stuff before - retiring from the French National team only to come back - I don't buy it. I think if Real signs a few more big names - he reconsiders and comes back to try to win one more championship...meh

Just plain silly - he isn't going anywhere.


Pre-emptive Tampering Is OK In England
The 2006 World Cup is just over a month away - and rather then focussing on their sad sack team, the English Football Association and the British press is already speculating that Portuguese National Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari is going to take over the English National Team. You may be asking yourself why they would be doing this now? Well, let me run this by you...England's recent history against the "Luistanos" has not been good - from Figo leading Portugal back from a 2-0 deficit at Euro 2000 (one of the great goals of all time), to Euro 2004 - we beat up on England. I wonder how much of this is to distract Scolari and the National Team from kicking their cans again if we meet at the World Cup - which could happen based on brackets. Maybe a plot to get my man Mourinho out of England and into job as Portugal's Manager?

English FA, British Press, David Beckham as Captain, Sven-Goran Eriksson as Manager - everything about English Soccer is just plain whacked.

That's about it for tonight - on a final note, the Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Devils Rays tonight - with Sheffield grounding out with the bases loaded to end the game. Why does this rate metion? Because that damn loss blew my pro-line ticket. I'm with Red Sox Nation - I hate the MFY.

I should have been in Vegas last night...going 3 for 4 in the NHL Playoffs. Just a quick post this morning because I'm running late. My picks for today:

New Jersey 4 - 1 over New York - no Jagr, no win for the Rangers.

Carolina 5 - 2 over Montreal - Habs fans will have these guys thinking that they are the reincarnation of the 70's teams. The Canes get back into the series tonight.

Buffalo 3 - 2 over Philadelphia - Have I told you the story about a man named Bob Clarke? Seriously, Hitchcock has Philadelphia playing tighter tonight, but it won't be enough. Buffalo's power play will beat the Flyers.

In Europe: Barcelona 2 - 1 over A.C. Milan - Barcelona has too much for Milan...the Catalans book a place in the finals of Champions League.

The NHL Goin' Retro

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

So leave it up to Bob Clarke and the Philadelphia Flyers to send the NHL playoffs back to the 70's - and commissioner Gary Bettman pulling out what hair he has left. After giving up 5 in the first period last night, the Flyers embodied everything their GM stood for as a player:

• heart...ummm, I mean poor sportsmanship - they quit playing hockey and went back to brawling;
  
  
• toughness...ummm, sorry about that, I mean dirty cheap shots - way to go Denis Gauthier;
  
  
• determination...the Flyers were determined to mame someone, anyone on the Sabres last night...Moose Dupont, Mad Dog Bob Kelly, Don Saleski and the Watson brothers must have been smiling ear to ear last night;
  
  
• class...check that, having your coach drop the F-bomb on live tv is just crass - somebody should "feed Hitchcock his lunch".

Philadelphia...home of the never beens and also rans. No wonder that city can't win any sort of major championship; with guys like Bob Clarke hanging around, its no wonder. All over the world of professional sports, you hear of good men getting fired for not winning - what does Bob Clarke have on Snyder?

Speaking of the above noted traits - the SenaTards beat the Lightning tonight in a game that turned ugly. Plenty of cheap shots and some "almost fights" - SenaTards so-called tough guy Chris Neil went after Ruslan Fedotenko tonight, boy Neil really handed it to poor old Ruslan (he of zero fights), and then threatened goalie Sean Burke - funny though, Neil pulled the classic turtle when Chris Dingman tried to engage him. Neil was shown smiling on the bench, with his gutless teammates "congratulating" him for drawing a penalty. I'm still waiting for this so-called tough guy to fight anyone who has a rep - I mean, he is without a doubt the toughest guy in the league against the lightweights. And you wonder why I call them "SenaTards"?

Enough about the playoffs for tonight - I have to watch Joe Thornton and the Sharks take on the Predators (I wonder if Jack Edwards cringes every time he hears the words "Joe Thornton - possible MVP winner). As I write this, my proline ticket tonight is looking great, Arsenal tying Villareal today, Tejada beating Troy Glaus in total bases, Big Papi's HR leading Travis Hafner's 1B and 2B (did Hazel say "Buh Bye" when she called it tonight?) - the only game left is San Jose over Nashvile...if/when it happens, beer on me tomorrow!

Lots to talk about in tomorrow's Weird & Whacked Wednesday post...

• The NFL isn't down with alternative all natural medicine - Ricky Williams suspended by for the upcoming season;
  
  
• The NCAA isn't down with collegiate athletes helping their families out - Heismann winner Reggie Bush being investigated - could lose the Heismann and cost USC their Pac-10 championship...the multi-million dollar contract he is going to get will take some of the sting away;
  
  
• The Vancouver Canucks fire the winningest coach in the history of their franchise because he can't get along with Todd Bertuzzi, the Leafs fire the coach who lead them to 7 straight playoffs - and Bob Clarke STILL has a job? Go figure...
  
  
• Go in peace but for God's sake just go! French international Zinedine Zidane announces he is done after the World Cup - if you know anything about this guy, you are probably with me in saying "Yeah right...just like you were done with French National team".
  

All this and more on tap for tomorrow's entry...its Wednesday, so you know what it means.

A few Hazies to be handed out tonight:

Manny Ramirez (in the interests of time, I won't trill the R like Hazel does) hits a 3-run home run in the top of the 8th to bring the Sox back and past the Indians. If the San Jose Sharks win tonight, Big Papi and Miguel Tejada get a Hazie tomorrow for their home runs tonight.

Chris Dingman of the Lightning for trying to get after that weasel Chris Neil. Bettman and the SenaTards may not have liked it...but Leaf Nation was smiling with that one.

The NHL Playoffs just got a lot more interesting last night, with Montreal and Colorado winning overtime games to take 2-0 leads in their series, with both hosting the next two games in the series. I'm not all that surprised by Montreal - up until posting my picks, I was leaning towards Montreal, thinking that they had a very good shot of winning. I am surprised by Colorado though - I really didn't think they would get it done against Dallas. Joe Sakic has once again proven to be a great captain.

I've got to get to work now - tonight's winners

Edmonton over Detroit 4-3. This one is a little risky, but tonight's game is crucial if they are going to win the series. The young legs have to skate the old Wings into the ice tonight.

San Jose over Nashville 4-2. Joe Thornton wakes up tonight and makes Nashville pay - the clock has struck 12 for Chris Mason.

Anaheim over Calgary 3-1. The Ducks remind me a lot of the Flames a couple of years ago. Selanne breaks out tonight.

SenaTards 4-3 over Tampa. I'd love to be wrong about this one...but I don't think so. Redden is back tonight, playing with a heavy heart - an inspirational lift for the Tards.

As I mentioned earlier - it has been a crazy busy day, that spilled over into a work night. So tonight's edition of the Hazies will be a shortened one - only the best of the best...well from my perspective.

EUROPEAN SOCCER
There were a number of notable performances in Europe this weekend - but the one that gets attention tonight comes from the Bolton/Charlton game. Portuguese international (Under 17 team) Ricardo Vaz Te scored in Bolton's 4-1 win. At 19 years of age, his future with the National Team is bright - look for his coming out party at Euro 2008 or World Cup 2010 - this kid is going to be special. After seeing him play a few times...I have one question to ask the soccer world "Freddy Who?" meh. Hazel lots of time to brush up on pronounciation on this kid.


NHL
The playoffs are in full swing - and while Leaf Nation (Hazel included) tries to stomach the 2006 edition of the NHL Playoffs without the Maple Leafs, we will sit and hope that the SenaTards and the Habs go quickly (though Montreal is looking good now with a 2-0 lead over the Hurricanes)...listening to their fans is WORSE than listening to Yankee fans.

Patrik Elias of the Devils rates another mention for his six point performance on Saturday against the Rangers.

John Madden of the Devils scored a hat-trick Monday night against the Jagr-less Rangers - two of them short-handed. When he doesn't have to check the opponents' star player...he can score. Pat Burns must be smiling.

Paul Kariya of the Predators had four assists on Friday, leading the Predators over the Sharks. Nice to see him get his career back on track down in the land of Elvis. If you don't agree with Paul's nomination...I'll leave you with this. His sister Kimiko (???) is a pretty damn good boxer; she's gorgeous and she'll knock your socks off...remind you of anyone you have seen lately? Hint: a sports personality who hosts a nightly highlight show... I'll let you mull it over.

Wojtek Wolski of the Avs had a goal and two assists on Saturday, leading Colorado to a 5-2 victory over Dallas. Pretty heady stuff for a rookie in his first playoff game...against Marty Turco and the Stars no less.

Brad Richards and Jonathon Cheechoo each had a goal and two assists leading their teams to all-important series tying wins on Sunday. Cheechoo lead the Sharks over the Predators; Vesa Toskala gets a Hazie too for recording a shutout. Richards led Tampa to a victory over the SenaTards which is always a good thing. He is going to look great in the blue and white of the Maple Leafs next year...I think Hazel would smile and nod in agreement.

J.P Dumont and Jason Pominville of the Sabres both had hat-tricks tonight in an 8-2 pasting of the Flyers. Watching a Bob Clarke team get spanked always warms the hearts of Leaf Nation - for those of you wondering...YES I have Dumont in one of my NHL Playoff pools.

Michael Ryder scored the winner in double overtime tonight - staking the Habs to a 2-0 lead over the Hurricanes. It is going to be a long day tomorrow listening to the Hab fans...I can see my inbox at work filling up already.


MLB
Alfonso Soriano of the Nationals went 4-5 on Friday night, with three HRs and five RBI against the Braves. Speaking as a Dodger fan (Red Sox West), it is still nice to watch the Braves get spanked. (Hey...Red Sox Nation, can I give Alfonso a shout out? he's a couple of years removed from the Yankees...is that enough time?)

In what I think would have brought a smile to Hazel's face on Friday night - Vernon Wells hit two HRs for the Jays in a victory over Boston - Wells had a tough go of it last year, so nice to see him start off well. Manny Ramirez hit two HRs in the same game...unfortunately, it was in a losing cause.

The Milwaukee Brewers hit FIVE HRs in one inning against Cincinnati on Saturday. No need to list the names...I don't think any Milwaukee fans check in here. If you are a Brewers fan, and you want the props, let me know.

In Sunday's game between Tampa and Texas - my boys Mark Texeira and Jonny Gomes (we think Jonny is of Portuguese heritage) each hit a HR, so did Jonny Gomes...you know I always give the Portuguese guys play here.

Ryan Howard of the Phillies knocked two out of the park on Sunday - I don't think Phillies' fans are missing Thome too much...ok, maybe a little. FYI Renee has Thome in the yahoo pool - so I know she's smiling.

Barry Bonds friend in NY hit a couple as well on Sunday. meh

NHL Playoffs - Game 2

Busy day today (working on a presentation for tomorrow) plus NHL Playoffs Game 2, so the Monday Hazie awards will be an abridged version - later (though I have to say, if Hazel was here to hand out the awards - she might say "Dude...hockey playoffs...you gotta be kidding me, send it via UPS).

Thankfully Carolina sent the game into O/T - which means my "Carolina to win" pick still alive. I am admitting defeat with the Rangers - they are done without Jagr. Buffalo pasted the Flyers tonight - which is great for BOTH of my playoff pools; and Dallas is getting spanked by Colorado in the 1st period.

Gotta book for a while - four more slides to do tonight.

A Sunday morning Hazie goes out to Partrik Elias of the Devils. Elias had 2 goals and 4 assists in leading the Devils to a 6-1 pasting of the Rangers yesterday. New Jersey's 1st line destroyed the Rangers yesterday...New York was never really in the game.

I had picked the Rangers to win this series - but with that late game injury to Jagr, looks like I'll be off to an 0-1 start. Speaking of bad starts...I have to wonder if Hazel Karma is working against me. Could it be that Hazel disagrees with most of my 1st round picks? I'm off to a brutal start, thankfully Buffalo's O/T win yesterday saved me for an 0 for 4 Saturday.

Today's winners

Ottawa beats Tampa 5-3. The SenaTards keep the pressure up on the Lightning.

San Jose 5-3 over Nashville. Thornton and the Sharks solve Mr. Mason

Edmonton 4-2 over Detroit. Edmonton recovers from the double O/T loss...the Wings old bodies take the game off.

Calgary 3-2 over Anaheim. Anaheim will win their two at home...not feelin' them today though.

Playoff Hockey Part Two

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

So the other four matchups in Round 1 get underway today, with two afternoon matchups and two this evening - its Saturday night and Canadians can't do without their "Hockey Night In Canada". So I've talked about who I like and here's why.

Dallas over Colorado in five games - The Stars have too much for the Avalanche. Dallas is bigger and stronger up front - with more offensive firepower now that Arnott has gotten his act together after a few so-so years. Outside of Joe Sakic (and whomever is playing with him at the time), Colorado doesn't have a lot of options to look to for offense. On defense, while Dallas doesn't have anyone that is as good as Rob Blake, overall their defense is stronger, faster and just plain better. Last, but certainly not least, Dallas holds a decided advantage in net - this has not been Jose Theodore's year, and to expect him to come back from a long lay-off and be as good as Marty Turco is just not realistic. Colorado had their day - the sun has set now.

New York Rangers over New Jersey in six games - this one is sure to raise eyebrows, along with a call to an institution to have me admitted for observation. I know New Jersey finished off the year with 11 straight wins, I know Brodeur is playing great hockey and you shouldn't bet against him, and I know Jay Pandolfo has a history of shutting down Jagr. I know all this - I also know that the Rangers primary attribute, is the one that New Jersey has trouble dealing with - team speed. The Rangers are quick, they are good with the puck - and when Jagr is on his is one of the best in the league. The Rangers are solid in net with Lundqvist and their D is good enough to limit the Devils top line. I think the Rangers power play is going to be the difference in this one. Rangers in six...you heard it here first.

Buffalo over Philadelphia in six games - much like the Dallas and Colorado matchup, the Sabres are better than the Flyers in every facet. Ryan Miller and Martin Biron give Buffalo a big edge in net over Esche and Nittymaki. The Flyers defense is big and slow - not a good matchup against a smaller, much quicker group of Buffalo forwards. The Sabres have two lines that can hurt you - with Forsberg, the Flyers might be able to put two lines together...question is, how healthy is Forsberg? Another playoff loss should spend the end of Bob Clarke...but he'll keep his job and keep putting teams like this together - big, tough and slow.

Carolina over Montreal in seven - I've been flip flopping on this one...remembering the old Hartford Whalers/Montreal Canadiens series that always seemed to go seven games. I'm not sold on Carolina, especially with the questions marks around Gerber's play as of late; but I think they are decidedly better up front and have too much firepower for Montreal to contain. Montreal is going to make it close...but at the end of the day, I don't think they have enough playmakers to get it done.

So that's it for this afternoon...there are my picks - do with them what you wish. Somehow, these have to work out better than my damn Pro-Line tickets (Everton cost me huge today by not being able to beat bottom-feeders Birmingham)... Lemme know who you like in Round 1.

Night one of the NHL Playoffs ended at about 1:05 am EDT. The Calgary Flames scored in overtime to beat the Ducks 2-1. The winning goal was scored by Darren McCarty...

Get it? Goin' for broke? If not, take a look back in the Weird & Whacked Wednesday entries...you'll see the humour in it when you find the entry with Darren - or then again, maybe you won't.

Playoff Hockey

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

So the first night of the NHL playoffs is almost in the books - the Anaheim/Calgary game is scoreless after the first period. I haven't changed my mind on my series picks; even with Edmonton and San Jose losing their first game on the road.

SenaTards over Tampa in four (maybe five) games - Ottawa is just better than Tampa in every facet. Ottawa has a shut down defence pairing that can effectively neutralize Lecavalier, Prospal and Richards - Tampa doesn't. Ottawa has a few role players that can chip in with a goal here and there - again Tampa doesn't...throw in the fact that Martin St. Louis has not been a factor this season, Ottawa has a big advantage up front.

John Grahame would have to come up with a miracle to win this series - I don't see it...and judging by tonight's game, neither do the Lightning. I get the notion of tight "playoff hockey", but by doing this Tampa is playing into Ottawa's hands - letting the SenaTards attack them.

Edmonton over Detroit in six games - I can't get over the fact that the Wings stockpiled 21 wins against Chicago, St. Louis and Columbus; I think they are counterfeit. Edmonton has the size and speed to really take it to Detroit and pound those older bodies. Detroit has the advantage between the pipes - but Legace is a loose cannon and can be taken off his game. If Roloson can come up big in a few games - Edmonton should be able to use their size and speed to wear Detroit down. It sounds so cliche but - special teams could be the determining factor; especially if Edmonton uses their speed to draw penalties.

San Jose over Nashville in six games - Nashville goes into the playoffs with an unproven goalie - San Jose has two decent options in Toskala and Nabokov (if needed). San Jose's one-two punch of Thornton and Marleau down the middle will make it very difficult for Nashville to look for defensive matchups. What is comes down to is two teams that are quite comparable - the determining factor will be San Jose's goaltending options, and the fact that they have two of the league's better centers. Thornton is on a mission this year...bad news for Nashville.

Anaheim over Calgary in six games - The Flames will once again rely on Kiprusoff to get them through the playoffs - the difference this time is that Iginla doesn't have a good center to get him the puck. Calgary has the best goalie/defence combination in the league - but at some point you have to score goals...and I don't think they have enough in them to win this series. Anaheim can't compare with Calgary's goaltending and defence - but playing Niedermeyer 27 - 30 mins a game helps bridge the gap. Advantage up front goes to Anaheim...and with it the series.

Quick MLB hits

Red Sox blow a four run lead to the Blue Jays and waste Manny's first two HR game of the season. I guess Hazel didn't make the trip...reverse Hazel Karma???? things that make you go hmmmm

Baltimore beats the Yankees...surprise surprise, A-Rod chokes in the 9th innning with they tying and go ahead runs on base.

I don't know who to hate more tonight - Andruw Jones for doing nothing against Washington or Alfonso Soriano for hitting 2 HRs tonight? Either way...another Pro-Line ticket down the drain.

Can someone tell me what happened to Johan Santana? He's getting it handed to him every time on he steps on the mound this year.

Renee's team sits over mine in the yahoo pool - but she still won't name her price for a bet...again, things that make you go hmmmmmm

I've got to get back to the game now - Calgary actually scored a goal. Check back Saturday for the other playoff matchups. I'm going with Dallas and Buffalo...and leaning towards Montreal and the Rangers.

No Time Today

16 hour day yesterday and I have to haul my can back in to work right away this morning - so a quick post today.

NHL Playoffs start tonight - my thoughts/analysis later. But so that I'm on record, here are my picks in the opening round

SenaTards over Tampa in four (maybe five) games - it pains me to say it, I'd love to see the Lightning upset the Tards...but Tampa's goaltending situation is a mess.

Edmonton over Detroit in six games - yes, my upset special in the first round. I think Edmonton has the speed to get by Detroit. If Roloson plays well, I think Edmonton upsets Detroit and sends the Wings into a rebuilding phase.

San Jose over Nashville in six games - Without Voukoun, I don't think Nashville has a chance to win this series - San Jose is the dark horse this year. Thornton sticks it to Jack Edwards in this series.

Anaheim over Calgary in six games - the Flames have Kiprusoff, but can they score any goals? Anaheim went into the playoffs playing really good hockey - Scott Niedermeyer is the difference maker in this one and proves that Brian Burke is a freakin' hockey genius.

Headfirst Into The Pool(s)

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in...for those of you checking in for this week's edition of Weird & Whacked Wednesday, my apologies but tonight was Hockey Pool night in Canada; today's/tonight's draft could have made the grade for a Wednesday entry. I am assuming that Playoff Hockey Pools aren't a big deal south of the border, especially in Red Sox Nation- but up here it turns relatively normal sports fans who turn into addled-minded, pseudo GMs who think the fate of the world rests with every pick.

Where are my manners? A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Back to the playoff pools - for those of you who have participated (I'm guessing Hazel has been, and likely still is in her fair share of playoff pools) you know the strategy you go in with can go out the window depending on where you pick. A bad draft position means that players you may have targetted going into the draft could be gone by the time your number comes up. My draft stategy has always been premised on the following rules:

• All or nothing - pick two or three teams you think may get to the conference finals and load up on those guys. It's risky, but its all or nothing right? If your teams get through the first round, you are golden. If not, well take comfort in the fact that one of your friends is going to enjoy one hell of a bender with your donation.
  
  
• Never, and I mean NEVER, pick players who are going to meet in the first round of the playoffs - why automatically doom yourself to lose players in the first round? Again, its risky, but be decisive and trust your judgement - plus, its only 20 bucks...Man up!
  
  
• Don't be afraid to take the third line players who are on teams that will go deep into the playoffs - they are bound to pick up some points and are likely to have very good games given that they are normally matched up against the opponents weaker defence pairings.
  
  
• Never pick too many players from a team who's goaltending is shaky - you are just dooming yourself. Teams like the Flyers, the SenaTards, the Hurricanes and the Predators are teams to avoid - yes they can all score, but come playoff time, they will over compensate for weak goaltending and try to pack it in...plus, they ripe for the picking in a seven game series. This goes out the window in the 9th and 10th rounds - you pick the best available guy.
  

Believe it or not, I've won my share of hockey pools with this method - certainly won more than I invested. So on to the night pool - my friends and I have done this one for years. Pick 12 players, the top 10 count towards your point total (this was invoked because between the 12 of us, we are all Maple Leafs, Habs and SenaTards fans - and with the exception of me, those cowards have always been too afraid to pick players from their favourite teams). Since I left my office pool picks at my desk - I'll go with the friends pool tonight. I loaded up on San Jose Sharks and Buffalo Sabres - San Jose because I think they will win the Cup and Buffalo because I know they are going to spank the Flyers - and if they get lucky enough to get a 2nd round matchup against the Devils, they are going to the Conference Finals with a very good shot of meeting San Jose. My picks

That's right - I used my number 12 pick to proudly select Hazel Mae. I chose Hazel for a number of reasons:

1. its never a bad idea to have Hazel on your team, as a matter of fact - is a very good thing. Have I told you about Hazel Karma?
   
   
2. I am very confident that my top 9 will get me deep enough into the playoffs to win the pool.
   
   
3. Mike Ribeiro of the Habs was gone - I wanted to represent by picking up a Portuguese guy - but one of the stinking Habs' fans took him early.
   

So there you have it - I like my team. The weird thing tonight (and in the office pool this aft) was that there were a number of chumps loading up on teams that left me scratching my head, namely:

Detroit - yes they finished first overall, but 21 wins against the likes of Chicago, St. Louis and Columbus will help you pad those stats. Detroit is too old, not fast enough - and Legace can come unglued at the drop of a hat or a bad goal. I think Edmonton can upset Detroit.

SenaTards - yes they will probably sweep Tampa in the first round (God I hope not) - but they are going to be playing tight into Emery, to protect him. I don't see them filling the net, even against Tampa's suspect goalies. I certainly don't see them getting out of round 2...

Flyers - Even with Forsberg coming back, their D is big and pretty slow, Esche has been terrible of late (Nittymaki may start - but he isn't a world beater either), and they aren't really playing that well as a team. They are going down to Buffalo in 6 (maybe 7).

Carolina - a very risky proposition - Gerber is looking ordinary and they are looking pretty weak defensively. I see a 1st round upset to Montreal (I hate saying that almost as much as I hate predicting a SenaTards win).

Nashville - no Voukoun and I loaded up on San Jose - so they have to go down.

We'll see how it all shakes out in a month or so...I guess I'll be watching hockey for at least another week. I'll wear a black armband for the Maple Leafs.

So hockey fans across Canada will gather for their annual playoff hockey pool. I have always been an all or nothing poolie - I look at 2 to 4 teams that I expect to go deep into the playoffs and pick my players from their rosters. It is a risky strategy, but if you nail the Stanley Cup finalists (especially if you pick a lower seed) you will almost everytime. The Playoff Picture Is Set

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The NHL season wrapped up tonight, with the Eastern Conference seedings being determined on the last day of the season. Heading into tonight, a few teams could determine their own fate - not surprisingly all of them failed, and all of them will likely end up kicking themselves as tonight is probably going to cost them.

Start with the team who wound up losing the most tonight - the New York Rangers, who had a chance to win their division tonight with a win at home to the SenaTards and give themselves home ice advantage in a first round playoff matchup. The Rangers got spanked 5-1 tonight by the Tards; here is what it cost the Rangers:

• A matchup against the Flyers who are big and slow, wounded, and have quite possibly the worst starting goaltending of all playoff bound teams (well, maybe Tampa Bay). The Flyers are ripe for the picking - Buffalo is going to love this matchup.
  

Instead, the Rangers now fall to sixth place and have a first round matchup against the New Jersey Devils who go into the playoffs winners of 11 straight. I still think the Rangers win this series - but it's going to take 6 or 7, and its going to cost them.

Oh yeah, the Rangers killed one of my pro-line tickets tonight, a really good one - so I'll be happy to see them bounced out of the playoffs.


The Carolina Hurricanes blew the first overall seed in the Eastern Conference by losing to the aforementioned Andrew Peters'-led Buffalo Sabres; the only team who could not improve or worsen the playoff seeding based on tonight's result. Carolina laid a great big egg tonight and let the SenaTards pass them for top spot in the conference. Here is what tonight's poor effort cost the Hurricanes:

• A first round meeting with the Tampa Bay Lightning - a team who limped into the playoffs, a team who has all sorts of question marks surrounding their goalies, and a team whose stars are not having the kind of season expected of them. Martin St. Louis is looking more like a flash in the pan, Frederik Modin hasn't been a force, Brad Richards is playing like a guy who knows he isn't going to be back. Carolina would have beaten Tampa in five games and had a nice rest before Round 2. Instead...
  
  
• The get the Montreal Canadiens - a team that matches up quite well with Carolina in terms of speed. Martin Gerber has looked very ordinary down the stretch, and at times downright average. Montreal's goaltending isn't that much better, with neither Huet or Aebischer inspiring a lot of confidence - but they are good enough to take Carolina to the wall. I don't know why...but I see this one going seven games (like the old Montreal/Hartford series)...and I see Montreal pulling one out. It pains me to say that - but the way these two teams finished up - I'll take Montreal.
  

So Carolina goes from a certain first round win - and plenty of talk about being a Stanley Cup contender - to another team that had a great year and did nothing with it (a la the Ottawa SenaTards of years past). Carolina is going to regret tonight's game...even if they beat Montreal - they will be spent and gassed.

Tonight's winners? The SenaTards...tomorrow will be filled with talk about sweeping the Lightning and how Hasek will be back for round 2. Keep dreaming SenaTards, the prima donna isn't coming back this year. I don't even want to talk about them.

More hockey later this week - two playoff pools tomorrow and I'm loading up on San Jose and Buffalo - hmmm maybe Andrew Peters as my surprise number one pick.

THE HAZIES - TUESDAY EDITION

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SOCCER
Barcelona is first in line to accept the hardware from Hazel. Ronaldinho led the Catalans to a 1-0 victory today against A.C. Milan at the San Siro; Guily scored the goal off of a Ronaldinho free kick. Unfortunately Deco missed the game due to a suspension - but he'll be back in two weeks to finish A.C. off.

Home Runs were the order of the night in the majors - with a number of players hitting two HRs tonight.

In a game that Hazel had to love - the Blue Jays got two HRs and 3 RBI from 3b Troy Glaus as they spanked the Yankees by a score of 10-5. RF Alex Rios chipped in with a HR and 4 RBI - and more importantly...keeping Hinske on the bench. Can't you hear Hazel saying "Buh Bye"? Does she still say it?

Speaking of Hazel (don't we always?) Manny Ramirez had a couple of hits and three RBI tonight in helping Boston get over Tampa Bay 7-4. Kevin Youkilis had the big hit in the 8th...but Red Sox Nation had to be happy seeing Manny driving a few in tonight. Manny step up to the stage for your Hazie award.

Speaking of Hazel and the Red Sox - young Hanley Ramirez has been one of the lone bright spots for the Marlins this year, along with Dontrelle Willis of course (who my friend Renee says is going to be in Boston soon). Ramirez hit his first two of the season tonight leading the sad-sack Marlins to a 12-6 victory over the Reds. Red Sox Nation has to be wondering "what if" - while getting Beckett was more than worth it...it still has to sting a little. I'm sure Renee will be slapping me around on the yahoo site if she reads this - she thinks Beckett is a stud. A stud pitcher...at least I think that is what she means - who knows with Renee. Check that...never mind, I know now.

Astros 3B Morgan Ensberg (also a member of Hazel Mae's Heroes Roto team) has 2 HRs and 3 RBI as I post this tonight (Astros leading 12-10 in top of 8th).

Atlanta Braves OF Andruw Jones seems to have picked up where he left off last year - hitting two more HRs leading the Braves to a 7-1 pasting of the red-hot New York Mets. Jones now has six on the season - the guy never did anything for me in Roto baseball...

Speaking of the Braves and Mets - Braves pitcher Kyle Davies shut down the Mets on 3 hits and 1 BB in pitching a complete game tonight. Maybe I should pick up this guy...

One more notable performance from the mound - in what is sure to bring a smile to the collective face of Red Sox Nation, Jason Johnson of the Indians gave up 1 run over seven innings to the hard hitting Orioles.

In the category of "not-so-notable" Randy Johnson had it handed to him by the Blue Jays tonight - that has to make Hazel smile.

Alright then...that's about it for tonight - I should have spent tonight pouring over NHL stats for my pools tomorrow. Oh well, maybe tonight's entry brings me some Hazel Karma at the draft table tomorrow huh?

Say Goodbye To 2005/06

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in on this last day of the NHL season. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Tonight Leaf Nation (including Hazel???) closes the book on the 2005/06 season - it started out with some optimism and plenty of question marks. The team that signed three hometown boys to come back and play for the blue and white lost two to injury (Lindros and Allison), with the third (O'Neill) having what could be considered to be the worst season of his career. Toronto talk radio will be all about who stays and who goes - personally, I think they should start at the top with the GM; but with lots of money freed up this summer, the talk is that he is going to be given another kick at the can. Who knows?

One Big Zero This Week

For those of you who have happened upon the page for the first time, Monday entries take a look back at some of the more notable performers from the world of sports over the past week or so. To those who have had exceptional performances - they get a weekly "Hazie" award and get to wear the title of Hazel's Hero; we'd like to think that Hazel would agree with this week's selections and agree to hand out the hardware.

On the flip side of the coin, there are those who are highlighted for less than exceptional performances, the "not-so-heroic"; or in the case of this week's most notable, a great big zero (apologies in advance to my man Adam who suggests we stay away from the term "zero"). Again, Hazel hasn't given her opinion on these clowns...but again, we'd like to think she'd give her "ok" nod.

HAZEL'S HEROES

BOSTON MARATHON
The annual run was held today - Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya won the race in a record time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds; breaking the previous race record by one second. Rita Jeptoo, also from Kenya, won the women's race in a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes and 33 seconds; Rita's story is worth the read.

Have I mentioned that I'm running a series of 10 KM races this year? Not nearly as impressive as these two...but hey, its a start. Hey Hazel, if you ever wanna go for a run by Dows Lake here...


NHL
Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo of the San Jose Sharks were named Co-Offensive Players of the Week in the NHL. Thornton had a goal and eleven assists, while Cheechoo had four goals and six assists in leading the Sharks to four wins this week - and into one of the leading contenders for this years Stanley Cup. I know I'm loading up on Sharks in my playoff pools. I wonder if Jack Edwards of NESN is going to be picking Joe in the pool this year. Hey Bruins' fans - any closer to buying Jack's post-trade analysis? The one that said it was a good trade for the Bruins...

Mats Sundin of the Maple Leafs gets honourable mention for his performance over the past week. Sundin had 6 points in a game against Florida, but more importantly, lead by example - putting this collection of Toronto Marlies on his back as he tried to get them into the playoffs. Sundin showed a lot of heart this year, never giving up on his team or the city of Toronto...going down with the ship some would say. This has been a particularly tough year on Mats - but he handled it like a leader. I'm sure Hazel would appreciate Mats' performance - a class act through and through.

Miikka Kiprusoff of the Flames won the Defensive Player of the Week. The Kipper was 2-0-1, allowing only 1 goal, posting a GAA of 0.32 and a save percentage of .988. Calgary's hopes rest with this guy - they remind me a lot of some of the Buffalo Sabres teams of the 90's; they had Hasek in net and that was about it. Good luck Calgary...I can't wait to see the flamesgirls.com website this year!

Sidney Crosby made history tonight, becoming the youngest player to hit 100 points in a single season. No word on how much he was whining tonight - or how many dives. Good for him though...enjoy the spotlight Sidney, Evgeni Malkin is coming - he is the real deal.

Craig Wilson of the Pirates was named National League Player of the Week. Wilson got a chance to play after Sean Casey went down, and made Pirates' fans forget about the light hitting 1st basemen - Wilson hit .364, with 5 HRs and 10 RBI.

The American League Player of the Week is a friend of Bonds - enough said.

Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals (and Hazel Mae's Hackers) tied a major league record by hitting a HR in four consecutive at bats; he hit three yesterday, including a walk off HR to win the game. The best hitter in the game? I think so...well, its Pujols or...

David "Big Papi" Ortiz hit two more HRs today against Seattle. The slap-happy Papi is putting Boston on his back while Red Sox Nation waits for Manny to be Manny. The guy hits them when it counts...so ya, its Pujols or Ortiz...or maybe...

Vladimir Guerrero of the Angels who hit two HRs yesterday against the Orioles. Guerrero is finding his HR stroke to go along with his hot start to the season, hitting at a .444 clip. Oh what the Dominican team could have been...should have been with these three, Manny, and Miguel Tejada. Scary doesn't even begin to describe what they could have been.

Ryan Church of the Nationals gets honourable mention for hitting two HRs yesterday against Florida, including the game winner in the ninth. Ryan is one of the guys who may only show up once this year (like Chris Shelton of the Tigers...ya, he had a decent 2nd week) - but a little time on Hazel's page is a good thing.

Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling have started out the season 3-0 for the Red Sox - it marks the first time since 1918 that two Sox starters have won their first three games...we won't get into how thin things look after those two. Speaking of thin...hear about David Wells?

Because Hazel is (used to be???) a Blue Jays fan - I have to mention that Vernon Wells is on fire this year. Wells who had a terrible start to last season is hitting .420 with 5 HRs and 9 RBI. There, I did it - I gave a Blue Jays player honourable mention...for the record, I still can't stand Hinske.

Ok, so the next three haven't made headlines like the aforementioned - but hey, I have to give my peeps of Portuguese heritage some play here - I think Hazel would be ok with it. Yesterday, all three of them hit HRs - Mark Texeira of the Rangers, Shane Costa of the Royals, and Jonny Gomes of the Devil Rays (yes, Gomes is a Portuguese name - don't know if he is or not but...) -


EUROPEAN SOCCER
Have you seen the new Nike commercial featuring Ronaldinho playing Futsal (Indoor Soccer for North Americans) when he was a kid? My favourite commercial - they blend old footage of him as a kid with current footage of him as THE MAN. The man's footwork is unbelievable - he is a magician with the ball. He gets a Hazie just for that.

Portuguese International Luis Boa Morte scored twice for Fulham on Saturday as they beat Charlton by a score of 2-1. Fulham has been teetering on the verge of relegation this year - the three points on Sunday pretty much assures them of staying in the Premiership. He isn't likely to play a big part in our World Cup drive this summer...but you never now. Hazel, just in case, its pronounced "BoooAh Mohrrr't" Don't forget to trill that R.

In other news...Chelsea (aka Portuguese National Team North) won again today and are pretty much a lock to win their second straight Premiership title under Jose Mourinho. Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Maniche represent the good guys in Red/Maroon and Green.

And finally...this week's Zero.
There were a few people who would have made this week's list of "Not-So-Heroic"; but there was on guy who made himself look like such a joke...that everyone else got a free pass this week (hear that David Wells??? - griping about wanting to pitch in the rotation...getting shelled and going on the DL - Dominik Hasek???? - saying you are not 100% so you can't play or help your team in the playoffs...just admit that you are gone for the remainder and let your team get on with getting bounced out of the playoff again!!!!).

This week's A-Hole of the week goes to Buffalo Sabres tough guy Andrew Peters. Who is Andrew Peters you ask? Let me tell you...late in the 3rd period of last night's game against the Maple Leafs - Peters, when challenged by Wade Belak backed off. That's not what made him the A-Hole...no, Peters decided to mock the Maple Leafs by making using his stick to take a golf swing. Andrew Peters...he of the 28 games, ZERO goals, ZERO assists, ZERO points. Thanks Andrew...I wonder how much ice time you are going to get later this week...ZERO perhaps?

Easter Monday a holiday created by and for the Government of Canada...call it a perk for being a "silly servant".

A big day in Boston today, the annual Boston Marathon is being run today - and as is tradition a morning game at Fenway. Something tells me Hazel is going to be hoppin' today, so much for her long weekend. Plenty to talk about later today - a recap of the some of the more notable performances over the last few days, and handing out the Hazies.

A quick birthday shout out to former Maple Leafs defenceman Mr. Borje Salming (Hazel had to have been a fan of his too) who celebrates his 55th birthday today. Salming was the man...my favourite player of all time. If you are a member of Leaf Nation - raise a glass to Salming today...they don't make them like him anymore.

Well, the Maple Leafs slapped the SenaTards around last night, but Tampa Bay's win over Carolina in overtime eliminated the Buds from playoff contention this year. Truth be told, it might not be the worst thing that could have happened - yes they had been playing well; but they weren't going to get it done with this roster. The Leafs can go into the off-season with a view to changing things up, making the playoffs this year may have justified some of the bad moves they made this year...and led them to some questionable signings (ie. Bryan McCabe wanting $5 million a year).

Ok, its off to church peeps...have a great one.

The End Of 2005/06 Season?

A quick post this morning - the Maple Leafs host the SenaTards tonight at the ACC (will Hazel be in attendance?) but the chances of the Buds sneaking into the playoffs took a nose dive yesterday with Tampa Bay picking up a point in Carolina. If there was ever a test for Hazel Karma...this weekend would be it. The Maple Leafs have to win out over the next few days and hope that Tampa and Atlanta go 0-fer. We'll see...

I'm hating Manchester United today (even with my boy Cristiano Ronaldo on the team) - yes, you guessed it...they screwed a couple of Pro-Line tickets I had yesterday. How does the number 2 team in the Premiership tie at home to the worst team? I know most of you don't care, but this is a giant upset of sorts. Sunderland, who was officially relegated after the result, goes into Old Trafford and holds Man U to ZERO goals. Somebody needs to be punched over this...YES, I mean I want to punch someone.

I'm not feelin' the love for Big Papi this morning either...I can't believe he couldn't manage a hit against Jamie Moyer...another Pro-Line ticket down. I'm not going to pick him today against Ichiro.

Ok, I've got to get on with things today...I've got stuff to do for a BBQ this afternoon. Steaks and Guinness (Kilkenny too) mmmmm

• Leafs win in O/T and are still in the hunt - its a bit of a long shot, but Leaf Nation is looking for a little bit of Hazel Karma this weekend...especially if she is home to visit her family for Easter;
  
  
• Reason number 1,852,257 to hate the SenaTards - they couldn't even beat Florida at home costing me a bundle on my sports lottery ticket...so much for sure things - these guys are going down in the playoffs. Mark my words.
  
  
• Speaking of so-called sure shots, reason number 14 to hate Crosby - he leads the Penguins to a win over the damn Rangers, this is the fourth time in a month these buggers have spoiled a ticket for me by upsetting a team that should be kicking their cans.
  
  
• Barry Bonds being investigated by grand jury for perjury? Kinda like convicting Al Capone for tax evasion isn't it?
  
  
• Eric Hinske had three hits last night...impressive until you realize that they were all singles and two of them were against Matt Clement - pretty impressive for a RF huh? Question to Red Sox Nation - are you worried about Wells and Clement? Wish you had Bronson back?
  
  
• Only in the CFL, one day after the dispersal draft - Frank D'Angelo claims he's interested in owning a CFL team in Ottawa "NEXT YEAR". While Frank got plenty of ink in Ottawa papers...I'm not buying it - this guy loves seeing himself on camera and in the news. Its free publicity for him.
