HAPPY NEW YEAR HAZEL & PEEPS

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae...the inspiration for the laughs, the chuckles and the good-natured ribbing on this page.

Not much to say tonight...with the extended family as we welcome 2006. A great night tonight - with 23 Maple Leafs fans (family and kids included - unfortunately, we have two Senatards amongst us) watching the Leafs smack the Devils for their fifth win in a row...and sneeking a few peeks at Canadian Jr. Team beating the U.S. (by the way...very cheap shot by Jack Johnson).

I'm not going to recap the NFL today...I'm not going to gloat about the Leafs...or Team Canada.

I logged on to wish those of you that are members of the Yahoo site...and/or those of you that visit this site regularly (for whatever reason) a very happy new year...all the best to you and yours. Thank you very much for checking in...and supporting both sites. If any of you bump into Hazel tonight...pass along my regards, and wish her a very happy new year from the peeps!

To Ms. Hazel Mae, as always, I hope things are groovy in your world. I want to wish you all the best in 2006 - I hope your 2006 is one filled with happiness, joy, love, health and prosperity - to you and your loved one. Um Feliz Ano Novo!

I'm outta here for the night...the family is screaming at the Flames/Oilers game.

Enjoy your new year...Enjoy your NFL Sunday...GO COWBOYS!

NFL Week 17 - My Last Chance

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. As always a special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

New Year's Eve brings us a couple of NFL Football games - and a full slate of action in the NHL...the only important game being the Leafs/Devils match up. So this week is my last shot at winning a week in my Spreads Pool, and winning back my entry fee + entry into the suicide playoff pool (I finished second last year which netted me a big fat zero).

As of Saturday morning - no word from Hazel on her NFL picks this week...so use these at your own peril. I will say this, I am taking a chance with some of these picks (spreads locked on Wednesday) - so I'll probably win the week, or finish dead last. Again, use at your own risk.

WEEK 17 PICKS

16) KANSAS CITY -3.5 over Cincinnati - Carson Palmer may play...may not. Trent Green and Larry Johnson are on fire. Chiefs still in the hunt for a playoff spot and almost unbeatable at home in December. While these are all good reasons... Thoughts of Hazel Mae = Chiefs. I have only gone against them twice this year; once vs the Pats and I got burned, and once against the Cowboys (we don't talk about that game on this blog). Ok...Yes I am sucking up to Hazel - again! Chiefs win by 10.

Straight up pool - Kansas City (11)

15) NEW ENGLAND - 6.5 over Miami - Tom Brady getting ready for the playoffs...Pats playing for number 3 seed in AFC. Did I not say a few weeks back that they would win the Super Bowl? Cold and snow in New England Sunday. Pats by 10

Straight up pool - New England (12)

14) New Orleans +13.5 over TAMPA BAY - New Orleans always plays the Bucs tough...and besides, I don't think the Bucs can blow anyone out - Chuckie pulls some starters if they go up big...New Orleans covers. Tampa by 13

Straight up pool - Tampa (15)

13) DALLAS -12.5 over St. Louis - Hazel Karma going Dallas' way this week (Carolina is going to lose) - Bledsoe and Jones have big games to lead Cowboys into the playoffs. St. Louis' loss last week caused a split in the suicide pool...I hate them. Dallas by 14

Straight up Pool - Dallas (14)

12) SAN DIEGO -8.5 over Denver - Schottenheimer's teams always play great when it doesn't mean anything. Denver is going to be resting tomorrow - Marty whips his troops into a good end of season performance. San Diego by 11

Straight up pool - San Diego (13)

11) ATLANTA +3.5 over Carolina - Hazel Karma works against Carolina...and for Dallas. Ron Mexico and the Falcons play ball control game. Oh yeah, Panthers are road wimps too. Dunn and Duckett too much for Carolina. Atlanta by 6

Straight up pool - Atlanta (6)

10) Chicago +3.5 over MINNESOTA - Grossman is expected to play a lot - so is Brad Johnson, who by the way has not played well against a good defence. Bears D makes a statement on Sunday. Bears by 3

Straight up pool - Chicago (3)

09) Washington -5.5 over PHILADELPHIA - I would love for Hazel Karma to work against the Redskins this weekend...but they have too much for the Eagles or rather, Eagles have too little for Skins. Lefty is going for the Skins. Washington by 7

Straight up pool - Washington (7)

08) JACKSONVILLE -3.5 over Tennessee - Leftwich is expected to get a few reps...and the Titans just want to end the season. Jacksonville by 6

Straight up pool - Jacksonville (8)

07) INDIANAPOLIS -6.5 over Arizona - Dungy is back and Colts won't want to finish the season with 3 straight losses. Indianapolis by 9.

Straight up pool - Indianapolis (10)

06) CLEVELAND +3.5 over Baltimore - Yes Boller got a Hazie this week...but Crennell whips the Browns into shape after last week's pathetic performance. Oh yeah, Baltimore is 0 - 7 on the road. Cleveland by 3

Straight up pool - Cleveland (4)

05) PITTSBURGH -16.5 over Detroit - Giving up that many points to anyone is a bit scary. Who knows how long starters last after they build up big lead. Steelers run their way to a 17 point victory.

Straight up pool - Pittsburgh (16)

04) OAKLAND +7.5 over NY Giants - The Giants are banged up...they win the game, but Moss and Jordan keep it close. Oakland uses this game to try to prove to the country they aren't that bad...I hate to say it - I think its Norv Turner. Giants by 6

Straight up pool - NY Giants (9)

03) Houston -1.5 over SAN FRANCISCO - With the first pick of the 2006 Entry Draft, San Francisco selects, from the University of Southern California, Reggie Bush. Houston by 3

Straight up pool - Houston (1)

02) GREEN BAY -2.5 over Seattle - Alexander scores a 1st quarter TD and leaves. Favre's last game maybe? Seattle doesn't care this Sunday...Green Bay by 3

Straight up pool - Green Bay (2)

01) Buffalo -1.5 over NY JETS - Don't like this game...something tells me Herman Edwards MIGHT coax a win out of his team..."might".

Straight up pool - Buffalo (1)

There you have it for this weekend. I gotta get up and outta here.

HAZEL'S SATURDAY HOROSCOPE
It's a new year headed your way with great new possibilities. You will have the discipline now to finish what you couldn't in the past. Follow through, do your best and promote whatever you believe in. 2 stars

Have a great one peeps...I'll be back later to wish one and all a happy new year.

The Eve Of New Year's Eve

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

It is freakin' cold here today -19 C with the windchill...I know that because I just got back from my run (7 km). My running buddy wanted to go to 10 today (yes, she is still around - she's insane, but she's cool) - but I reminded her that I am "working from home" this morning. So I'm going to put in a couple of hours before going out to the P for lunch with some pals from work.

Still don't know what to do about the NFL picks this week - I'm thinking about going out on a limb with some...taking a chance to win the week or finish in last place. Funny thing, I found myself looking in through the newspaper to see what the local handicapper thinks - he is under 50% for the year. I'm open to suggestions...as always Hazel's input would be more than welcomed.

Still really liking that Depeche Mode song Precious.

Well, I gotta get to work...have a great one Peeps. Note to "GW" - got your comment this morning...good point, we'll get the discussion going on Yahoo site. But thank you!

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world...if this is the start of your weekend...Enjoy your New Year's Weekend!

HAZEL'S FRIDAY HOROSCOPE
Take a jaunt that will get you into the new year's groove. A trip down memory lane will do you a world of good. Once you look back, you'll realize how far you've come and how much you can accomplish. 2 stars

Nice...a time for reflection. How far she has come...how much she can accomplish? We know...

Final Week Of The NFL

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

Week 17 of the NFL is upon us - The Cowboys are still in the hunt for a playoff spot...hoping for some Hazel Karma this weekend. We need Ron Mexico to come up big against the Panthers...or the damn Eagles to do ONE thing right this year and beat the Redskins. So Hazel, can you help us out?

Speaking of the NFL, I'm going to look over the list of games...my last chance to win a week in the spreads pool - Hazel's last chance to submit her NFL picks. This is the week, I came within a couple of points of winning last week. In the straight up pool...3rd place, split the suicide pool (Stupid Rams), and I have won two weeks...so its all good there.

For members of Red Sox Nation - good news. Miguel Tejada is making noise again...he wants out. I'm telling you...he is going to Boston - and Ramirez is going to be staying put too. The Economics of RAMADA...I know it. The Red Sox have to do something...I read something about talk of rebuilding - ummm...Ortiz, Ramirez, Varitek, Schilling - not names that you would associate with a team that is rebuilding.

I'm outta here...Week 17 of the NFL.

Have a great one peeps...speaking of which, if you are one of the "Peeps" - go to the Yahoo site...administrative/policy issue on site to be discussed - your input is needed.

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Feel Good Inc?????

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

So I wake up this morning to Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz...a groovy song to wake up to. What wasn't groovy was the quarter of inch of ice I had to scrape off the damn car today. Freezing rain overnight is definitely NOT a feel good kind of thing. Oh well, none of you care anyways...right? I'm going to get some Tim's...or maybe Timothy's today...we'll see when I get downstairs.

ADDENDUM TO WEDNESDAY
This wouldn't necessarily qualify as weird, whacked or silly...but more in the vain of "Would you believe that...?"

Former NHLer Stu "The Grim Reeper" Grimson recently earned his law degree from the University of Memphis. Good for Stu.

HAZEL'S THURSDAY HOROSCOPE
Don't take anything too seriously today. You should be out having fun. Travel or activities that bring you in touch with people from different backgrounds will give you unique ideas for the upcoming year. 5 stars

Sounds like a "Hazel kinda day". Nice

Weird, Whacked and...Watched?

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking - from the members of hazelspeeps and the semi-regulars who have been here before and know what Wednesdays are about on this blog - to those of you that have happened upon this page for the first time and are wondering to yourself, "What the...?"

As always, a special hey goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae - a woman who has been known to enjoy a good sports-related chuckle - I think she'd like the Wednesday recaps.

To those of you that are in the category of the former, I thank you for coming back to check in and hope that you find this entry relatively amusing, if not at least a little bit informative (special note to the semi-regulars but not “peeps” – whatcha waitin’ for? Go to yahoo and sign up).

To those of you that belong in the category of the latter, Wednesday entries look back at the weird, the whacked and the downright silly from the world of sports over the past seven days or so – the collective “we” here like to poke a little fun.

BEING WATCHED????

Before I go into the Wednesday’s recap – I have to raise my glass of Port to the member of the Hazelspeeps who has been reading the blog faithfully enough to pull a holiday season funny in response to my version of the Twelve Days of Christmas –

On the second day of Christmas I wish Hazel would give to me - 2 "Hazel-approved" pics for the yahoo site... hey, give me a break, its Christmas!

So when I logged on to the Yahoo site today there were two new pictures of Hazel – so smart Alec or Alexander as it may be (remember...Hazelspeeps has Tina as a member) bravo, good show and thanks for the laugh – now if you wanna run those by Hazel to see if you can get her “Okie Dokie” on them…be my guest. Ha ha ha. I know a blogger in Boston would certainly have approved of one of them…I wonder if he is a member of Hazelspeeps – how whacked would that be huh?

So to the honoured and valued member of Hazelspeeps…good show – we’ll discuss the group policy on posting Hazel’s pics (psst. they should be pics that she has knowingly posed for ie. NESN publicity stuff – stuff that she knows could/would make internet – it’s only right). By the way…dude have you downloaded any songs of the day? Lemme know what you thought of Koteja by Stewart Copeland (which I was just listening to).

Now Playing…Suedehead – Morrissey

ALLO? ESTA ALGUEM EM CASA?

I know that is Portuguese – but the long distance phone card scam has finally hit the major news providers. MSNBC carried the story today – talk about being on top of sports news huh? Well, the word it out and the names of the defendants being sued have been made public – a couple of them are Hazel’s buddies…they helped easy her transition into the world of boston sports. I hope things work out for them.

Now Playing…Cars DJ Remix – Gary Numan

CANADIAN TIRE TO HIRE TUCKER

New Englanders won’t get this reference…but Hazel might – and Canadians definitely will. In Monday’s Leafs/Devils game, Darcy Tucker took off Cam Janssen’s helmet during a fight and proceeded to hit him twice with it – both shots caught shoulder pad. Tucker received a match penalty and was fined $2,500. After watching the way he went to town on Janssen, you gotta wonder how long before Tucker replaces that geeky “Stepford Husband” and starts pitching a new mallet or driver for Crappy Tire.

Now Playing... Elvis is Everywhere - Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper

MONEY TO BURN

Word is somebody bought the St. Louis Blues...given that, you will have to forgive my lack of motivation to find out more or post a link.

THE "TWINS" OF BOSTON SPORTS BLOGS
The reference is to that old Arnie and Danny Devito movie. Eric Wilbur (the "Arnie") writes a pretty insightful, well written and funny blog about the Boston Red Sox - I'm a regular reader. The guy writes some great stuff and doesn't take himself too seriously. Then you have Jack Edwards writing about the Bruins. His recap of the Leafs/Bruins home and home last week was straight out of a elementary school playground. Case in point, straight from the desk of Jack -

Tie Domi told Dan LaCouture, after LaC used the classic over-and-under method to win a unanimous decision at the Garden Thursday night, "I'm gonna kill you tomorrow night." Yeah right, Tie. What - you were going to assault Dan's fists with your face? The game was too close in Toronto and Domi didn't want to end up with the reddest nose this side of Rudolph, and it's history now.

Jack, umm...well. See...Tie Domi isn't really a heavyweight anymore. He fights once in a while, but he rarely wins anymore. He's been through the wars, he's a warrior - albeit an aging one. But to write something like that? Come on now - When LaCouture takes on a true heavyweight like George Laracque or someone like that...then talk. But Tie Domi? Geez Jack...in his prime Tie would have lunched LaC like he lunched Probert all those years ago.

And Jack..the Zhamnov call for hooking on Allison? You been watching the NHL lately? Its called every damn night - you can't lay a finger on Crosby without being called for holding or something. Let's chat Jack...

Now Playing... Dame Un Beso - Cubanlink

I HAVE NEVER TAKEN STEROIDS - PERIOD
Rafael Palmeiro still doesn't know how he tested positive for steroids. He has no clue of what happened...can't pinpoint anything...someone must have done something - but oh yeah, he takes responsibility for it. haha

Now Playing, for Rafael... Stranger In My House - Tamia (pretty good song - download it)

BOSTON RED SOX NORTH
Is it just me...or is the Chickenhawk using the Boston Red Sox as his blueprint? The Blue Jays announced that they have traded for Troy Glaus - seems to me that Toronto is going with a couple of good solid starters and are going to try to outhit everyone, a la Boston. We'll see...I mean, Toronto STILL has Eric Hinske.

Now Playing...Little Ways - Dwight Yoakum

Well, that about wraps it up for me. Work comes early tomorrow.

Have a great one peeps - especially Hazelspeeps new PR person, whoever he or she may be...nice work!

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world...and I hope you got a chuckle out of this if you are checking in.

Weird and Whacked Wednesday Part I

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special “Hey” goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

A nice day to come back to work – weather was dreary, but relatively warm. No traffic on the drive in today (or the rest of the week I suspect). So if you have checked in to see what stories have made Weird and Whacked Wednesday recap (believe it or, some people actually do..who’da thunk it?) , I will apologize now for not having had time to put it all together…later tonight.

Last night I mentioned that former Expo/Red Sox (among others) reliever Jeff Reardon had been arrested for armed robbery. The initial story from the wire had Reardon saying that the anti-depression medication he is on was responsible for the events that had taken place earlier in the day. While my first reaction upon hearing this was “Hmmmm really?” … I have changed my mind a little. If you are reading this, and you also looked at this with a healthy dose of scepticism…I suggest you read Dan Shaughnessy’s article in today’s edition of the Boston Globe. The last couple of years have been torture for Reardon…while Shaughnessy lays it on a bit thick,(reminding readers that Reardon is a native of Massachusetts and highlighting his high school and university achievements), he presents a compelling case for looking at Reardon’s case with compassion and understanding.

I know this is not going to be a popular sentiment…but I am already growing very tired of Sidney Crosby and the scripted soundbites he puts out there every damn night. For those of you in New England who weren’t lucky enough to get the CBC feed of the Leafs/Penguins game last night, the second intermission featured an interview with the NHL”s new “Jesus”. I know he is going to be a very very good (I won’t say great yet) player…but this guy is already being groomed to be full of crap. Crosby, when asked about is relationship with former coach Ed Olczyk said “Looking back on things, Ed Olczyk helped me a lot.” Looking back on things? He’s played what – 35 games? There he was talking about how Olczyk helped his career and development…Note to his PR people…HE’S EIGHTEEN – stop turning him into the NHL’s very of Gary Coleman or any other child star who is supposed to come off looking and speaking like an adult. Stop trying to cover for the “It was time for a change…” garbage he spouted after the firing.

Speaking of the Penguins…Michel Therrien, the Pens new head coach when asked about the play of the Penguins also couldn’t help himself from taking a shot at Eddie O, claiming the team was playing much better than before. When pushed by Ron MacLean, Therrien said that while the Pens weren’t exactly where they wanted to be, they were still playing much better and that the effort was definitely there. Therrien must be a disciple of NESN” Jack Edwards, because with an 0-4 record (2 O/T losses), he shouldn’t be taking shots at Eddie O. Proof positive that task-master (and brown noser) Therrien is full of crap – Mark Recchi’s view on things were different. Recchi was interview between periods of last night’s game and according to him – the effort was inconsistent at best. MacLean pretty much quoted Therrien when he asked Recchi about he viewed the Pens energy level and work eithic/effort – Recchi’s response? “I wouldn’t say that it’s been better on a consistent basis” going on to say that there have been flashes, but not where it needs to be winning hockey games at the NHL level. Therrien names an 18 year old rookie as an alternate captain…nice call Michel – I’m sending you a case of Chap-stik – we’ll see what you can do with the collection of big name free-agent floaters and twilighters Craig Patrick signed.

Before anyone reminds me that the Maple Leafs were the team that once named an 18 year old kid by the name of Wendel Clark as their captain – big difference. Wendel was an 18 year old man that inspired his team with his physical play, raising the collective toughness and guts of his team. Crosby has been coached on how to speak like a leader – his words are hollow…But I’m sure he’ll have a great career.

Ok, I gotta skidattle - but I'm thinking about a Weird and Whacked Wednesday Year End Recap, any ideas for some nominees? Ok, on the one of the reasons I checked in this morning -

HAZEL”S WEDNESDAY HOROSCOPE
The good cheer you take with you will be well received and put you in everyone's good graces for the upcoming year. Your thoughtfulness will be remembered and the troubleshooting done along the way appreciated. 5 stars

Hazel Must Be Smiling

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A very special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae - she must have been watching the Leafs and Penguins tonight - check that, the Toronto Marlies and the Pens.

After watching that game - the Leafs must have had Hazel's good karma working for them, killing three straight penalties very late in the game - with close to a minute and a half 5 on 3. I don't know if Hazel is in Toronto this week (enjoying some family time over Christmas) - but she must have been watching the game!

Just want to check in to say - LEAFS WIN...LEAFS WIN...LEAFS WIN!

Lots of stuff on tap for Wednesday..

  • More on the phone card scams involving some Dominican major leaguers;

  • Jeff Reardon gets busted for armed robbery;

  • Darcy Tucker tries to knock some sense into the Devils;

  • The St. Louis Blues finally get a new owner (possibly the worst business deal in the world of sports); and

  • The Bruins actually win a game - Jack Edwards must be smiling, because even though they have been losing - the Bruins are playing good hockey...go figure.
I'm signing out for tonight. Have a great one peeps.

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world...hope you are enjoying some down time.

Hazies Make Great Christmas Presents

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in - I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed time with your family and friends. A very special "Hey" and Merry Christmas goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae - I hope you and your loved ones are enjoying a safe and happy holiday...hope you got Boxing Day off this year.

What a weekend in the NFL - there were some great games and finishes:
  • The Cowboys get some "Hazel Karma" to beat the Panthers (who I think are over-rated) - yes, I think Hazel sent some good luck Dallas' way - they are still alive;

  • The Bucs get a field in the dying seconds of Overtime to knock Ron Mexico and the Falcons out of the playoffs - both teams missed short field goal attempts in O/T;

  • The Bills go into Cincinnati and beat the Bengals - best thing about the game was watching Chad Johnson going nuts when he couldn't find the live deer he had planned to use in his TD celebration - classic...I'm sure Hazel saw the humour in it.

If this is your first time here, Monday's Weekend Recap entries highlight the more notable performances in the world of sports from the past week, with the NFL, NHL, MLB and European Soccer Leagues getting most of the attention. The winners get a Hazie - as always, I would hope that Hazel would agree with this week's winners.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE HAZIES

NFL
Running Backs took the spotlight from QBs this past weekend - in what should be no surprise to most astute football fans (of which I believe Hazel to be one), the top 10 rushers this past weekend all contributed to wins by their teams; of the top 10 passers in terms of yardage - six of those performances came in losing efforts.

RBs
Julius Jones of the Cowboys literally carried Dallas on his back. Jones rushed for 194 on 34 carries and ran for 2 TDs - against a Carolina defence that went into the game ranked in the top 5 against the run.

Ricky Williams of the Dolphins took it to the Titans; rushing for 172 yards on 26 carries with a TD thrown in for good measure. Williams has had a better season than most had predicted...he's flying high (I couldn't resist).

Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks keeps on rolling. Alexander rushed 21 times 139 yards and a TD, he caught a TD pass to tie the season record for touchdowns.

Honourable mention goes to Cadillac Williams of the Bucs and Larry Johnson of the Chiefs (no I am not sucking up to Hazel), both of whom lead their teams in must-win games.

QBs
Kelly Holcomb of the Bills completed 24 of 31 passes for 308 yards and 1 TD in leading Buffalo to a win over heavily-favoured Cincinnati. Holcomb put up numbers that we are used to seeing from Bengals QB Carson Palmer.

Josh McCown of the Cardinals completed 27 of 38 passes for 294 yards and 2 TDs in leading Arizona to a victory over a banged up Eagles team. McCown has had some games with great numbers, but usually came up short. He didn't on Saturday.

Kyle Boller of the Ravens seems to be coming of age. Boller 24/34 for 289 yards and 3 TDs as he led Baltimore to a victory over the Vikings. Boller complete a bunch of passes on 3rd and long and was instrumental in bouncing Minnesota out of playoff contention.

RECEIVERS
Santana Moss of the Redskins (have I told you lately how much I hate them?) caught 5 passes for 160 yards and 3 TDs against the Giants. One of the TD catches was certainly a highlight on most sports shows last night.

DEFENCE
DeMarcus Ware of the Cowboys had his best game of the season yesterday against the Panthers. Ware was a one man wrecking crew against Delhomme and the kitty cats - 7 solo tackles, 2 assists, 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles...I think that qualifies as a dominating performance...don't you?

Terrence McGee of the Bills had a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and sealed the victory with an INT for a TD late with less than 1 minute to go in the game.

I'm going to wrap this up and go back to watching the Patriots and the Jets...Goodbye to Monday Night Football on ABC. I will be checking back in tomorrow with more...

Breaking News that will NOT get any of the of those being mentioned a Hazie. The St. Petersburg Times reported that Rays SS Julio Lugo has been linked to a telephone card scam. The Times reports that a number of Dominican major leaguers are being named as defendants in a suit being brought forward by convenience store owners who sold defective cards. Out of respect for Hazel, I will not list the names here (I don't think she would approve)...but they are included in the story. I was shocked at a couple of the names; I think you will be too.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a few minutes to read this week's recap...if you have suggestions, please feel free to post your nominees or winners. Have a great one peeps...

Hazel I hope things are groovy in your world!

Just checking in quickly to say Thank You Hazel...for that "running into the kicker" call yesterday...that HAD to be Hazel Karma coming through...well, I'm going with that! More later.

Christmas Is A Time For Family

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in (if you have been here before, you should really consider being a "peep" - check it out). A special "Merry Christmas Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

So its Christmas Eve...I hope you have all your shopping done and settle in to spend some quality family time - I know I am today. I have 4 of my cousins coming over to watch the Cowboys/Panthers game today...hoping Hazel sends some good karma Bledsoe's way (please Hazel?). I gotta book...people arriving...GO COWBOYS!

HAZEL'S CHRISTMAS EVE HOROSCOPE
This can turn into a very special night if you spend it with the people you love the most. A gathering at your place will make everyone aware of how much you care. Your kindness will bring you lots of good wishes and positive thoughts. 3 stars

That's a nice thought for Hazel (especially if she is back home in Toronto!)...Merry Christmas Eve, back later with a mini-update on the pools.

Enjoy your NFL Saturday Peeps...Hazel I hope things are groovy in your world!

NHL Friday - NFL Saturday

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

Good day today - we were sent on our way today at noon - which allowed us to make it a pub afternoon...Guinness and Kilkenny were on tap this afternoon! I hope your boss let you go early today too. In Hazel's case...let's hope NESN gave her today off so she could fly home to see her family for Christmas. I gotta think she was at the ACC tonight as the Leafs beat the Bruins by a score of 2 - 1. "Hazel Karma" had to have been working at the hanger tonight with the Leafs scoring two 5 on 3 power play goals. A Leafs' win is a nice way to go into Christmas - and I am certain that Hazel would agree with that!

NFL SATURDAY
Ok, so here are my NFL picks for the week - I am still winless this season in the Spreads Pool...that changes this weekend. While Hazel has not provided her picks or input, I'd like to think she'd give the thumbs up for this week's choices (home team in caps).

16) New England -5.5 over N.Y. JETS - Brady vs. Bollinger...in December. Need I say more? Ok, how about - the Patriots are gearing up for the playoffs. The Pats shut down a pretty good Bucs running game - what are the Jets going to do without Curtis Martin? Flutie starts the 4th quarter to mop up - Pats by 20.

Straight Up Pool - Pats (13)

15) BALTIMORE -2.5 over Minnesota - I know, I know what I always say "Monday Night Winners are next Sunday's losers"; but last week against the Steelers, the Vikings showed how ineffective they are against a good D - ummm...Baltimore with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed...in Baltimore. Ravens by 8

Straight Up Pool - Baltimore (4)

14) HOUSTON +6.5 over Jacksonville - Forget the weather last week in Jacksonville - they just can't score. Houston wearing their "battle red" jerseys...how about the fact that they are 7-7 vs. spread...did I mention Jacksonville can't score? Dominick Davis doesn't want to hear talk of Reggie Bush. Jacksonville by 4

Straight Up Pool - Jacksonville (9)

13) TAMPA BAY -3.5 over Atlanta - John "Chuckie" Gruden whips the Bucs into shape after last week's beating at the hands of Brady and the Pats. The Bucs have a history of limiting Ron Mexico's scrambling...and they can contain Dunn and Duckett. Joey "Muscle Man" Galloway makes a big play to lead the Bucs to a win. Bucs by 6

Straight Up Pool - Tampa Bay (7)

12) ST. LOUIS -9.5 over San Francisco - Stephen Jackson hasn't had a good game for Hazel Mae's Cowboys in a while. I will put my faith in "The Greatest Show on Turf" over a rookie QB with a Quarterback rating of 26.5. Rams by 13

Straight Up Pool - St. Louis (11)

11) SEATTLE -7.5 over Indianapolis - Holmgren is playing his starters as long as it takes to win the game. Seahawks D has 46 sacks - did you see what San Diego did to Manning? Oh yeah, Marvin Harrison is out too. I said earlier this week, the Colts are going to come apart at the seams...the beginning of the end. Colts look to leave Seattle unscathed. Seahawks by 10

Straight Up Pool - Seattle (10)

10) Pittsburgh -7.5 over CLEVELAND - The Steelers have their eyes on the playoffs (albeit with visors on when Cowher yells)...they beat the Browns without Hines Ward the first time around. The Browns have their eyes on Kellen Winslow Jr. Browns playing out the string - Steelers playing for Cowher. Steelers by 10.

Straight Up Pool - Pittsburgh (11)

09) Chicago -6.5 over GREEN BAY - The Pack scored 3 points against a very good Baltimore D, will they score any against Chicago? Without Gado? I know what I have said before "Monday Night losers are next Sunday's winners" - not here though. Divisional rivalry scares me a bit though...just a bit. Grossman manages the Bears to a win. Bears by 9

Straight Up Pool - Chicago (12)

08) KANSAS CITY -1.5 over San Diego - Chiefs are unbelievable at home in December. Green has pretty much been the best QB in the league over the last six weeks. Have you seen Larry Johnson lately? San Diego might have blown their load against the Colts last week and L.T. may be a bit banged up. Ok, how about this "Thoughts of Hazel Mae" ... Hazel is a Chiefs fan...yes, sucking up to Hazel - so what's your point? Kansas City by 3

Straight Up Pool - Kansas City (5)

07) DENVER -13.5 over Oakland - I hate having to count on Jake "Porn Star Moustache" Plummer to cover 13.5 points...but the Raiders are a mess, and Denver's D is good for a TD tomorrow. Broncos by 17

Straight up Pool - Denver (15)

06) MIAMI -6.5 over Tennessee - I'll take the Dolphins D and a solid running game over the Titans. Miami plays a field position kind of game against the Titans. Olindo Mare kicks 3 field goals. Miami by 9

Straight Up Pool - Miami (8)

05) Dallas +5.5 over CAROLINA - after last week's performance (or lack thereof) against the Redskins...Parcells has to have them ready. Keyshawn has a big game tomorrow, and Dallas D finally comes up with a big effort against the Panthers. Hey, it's Christmas...give me a break! Dallas by 4

Straight Up Pool - Dallas (3)

04) N.Y. Giants +2.5 over WASHINGTON - The Redskins aren't that good, and the Giants will use Barber to set up a few shots down the field to Burress. The Giants D keeps them in the game. Giants by 3

Straight Up Pool - Giants (4)

03) ARIZONA -1.5 over Philadelphia - I'll take Boldin and Fitzgerald to make a few plays vs. the Eagles. Arizona has a history of playing well when it means nothing. This one means nothing. Cardinals by 4

Straight Up Pool - Arizona (2)

02) Buffalo +13.5 over CINCINNATI - I think Holcomb can keep it somewhat close...weather maybe? I'm taking a chance with this one...late TD brings Bills cover. Cincinnati by 13

Straight Up Pool - Cincinnati (16)

01) Detroit +3.5 over NEW ORLEANS - if you are in New England or southern Ontario (Hazel still has lots of supporters in T.O region) - consider yourself fortunate...you don't have to watch this dog. Some of us are going to be stuck with this game. The emergence of the other Roy Williams. By the way...YUCK! Detroit by 6

Straight Up Pool - Detroit (1)

There you have them...my Guinness/Kilkenny inspired picks. I'll put my trust in the logic and analytical strengths brought on by Irish beer over a Magic 8 Ball. I'm liking these picks...but then again, I was really liking Guinness and Kilkenny today too! I think Hazel would like these picks...she's give the thumbs-up this week...wouldn't she?

I'm going to turn around and watch the Canucks and Flames now. Enjoy your NFL Saturday peeps...Hazel I hope things are groovy in your world - especially if you are with your real "peeps" in Toronto (enjoy your family time).

On the second day of Christmas I wish Hazel would give to me - 2 "Hazel-approved" pics for the yahoo site... hey, give me a break, its Christmas!

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - it was Guinness and Kilkenny...but it brought on the same result...

Friday Morning Fess Up

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

Ok, I'm on my way into work, going in late today since its a right off anyways - last work day before Christmas...where people walk around with a bottle of Bailey's and ask you if you want your coffee spiked.

Yes, the irony of the Leafs loss last night to the Bruins wasn't lost on me. For all the talk of the Thornton trade...Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau scored. Somewhere in Boston, Jack Edwards is probably laughing; but tonight is another night - we'll get the Bruins at the ACC. Who knows, if Hazel made the trip home for Christmas...she could very well be at the ACC tonight!

HAZEL'S FRIDAY HOROSCOPE
You'll be sensitive to what others think and say today. Don't be afraid to ask someone to explain him- or herself. A secret surprise may be why you are feeling left out or insecure. Don't pester someone to tell you. 2 stars

A secret surprise? Hope its a good one Hazel.

Have a great one peeps...Hazel, if you are travelling home today, have a safe trip. Hope things are groovy in your world.

A Sobering Thursday

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "hey" goes to Ms. Hazel Mae.

The day started with news that James Dungy, son of Colts' head coach Tony Dungy was found dead earlier this morning - police are saying that it was a suicide. I'm sure that all sports fans send their thoughts and prayers to the Dungy family. What an awful thing to have happen - there just aren't words for this. May he rest in eternal peace.

I think that out of respect for what the Dungy family is going through...no post tonight - it just doesn't seem right.

Have a great one peeps. Hazel, if you are checking in, I hope things are groovy in your world.

I'm out.

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – damn snow. Woke up this morning to a winter wonderland with big billowy snowflakes falling softly from the sky – the kind of snowflakes that brings you back to childhood days when you would open your mouth and catch them on your tongue as you walk to school …ok, enough of that Norman Rockwell crap – you do that now and you’ve got Acid Rain snowflakes…

TEAM CANADA ANNOUNCED
As I mentioned yesterday, the Torino 2006 edition of Team Canada was announced yesterday; with Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman opting out of the 2006 Olympics, Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche will captain this year’s team. There were no real surprises this year – with every player selected to the 20 man roster having had donned a Team Canada jersey in international play at the professional level.

Martin Brodeur will shoulder the goaltending responsibilities, with Luongo waiting in the wings if needed.

The Defence is made up of veterans, with the exception of Robyn Regher (a young 25) – in what could be considered a surprise pick, Adam Foote was selected to the starting 7. Foote selection was based more on past achievements for Team Canada, and not for his play this year, which can only be summed up as “ok”. He’s a vet and they expect him to show up. Kudos to Bryan McCabe who made the taxi squad.

There were no real surprises in terms of forwards – well, maybe just Kris Draper, but he is the checking center…so there aren’t a lot of questions coming from fans up here. The discussion up here has focussed on whether or not Todd Bertuzzi should have made the team or not – bottom line is that Gretzky is loyal to those who have delivered in the past…you gotta respect that.

All in all, it looks like another Gold Medal team – right Hazel? Are you allowed to agree with that?

HAZEL’S THURSDAY HOROSCOPE
Things are heating up, and regardless of what you hear, let your intuition lead the way. You can and will gain respect as long as you stick to your own standards. 3 stars

In keeping with the days of Christmas theme…

On the third day of Christmas I wish Hazel would give to me…a promise of three playoff series victories for the Los Angeles Dodgers this year.

Hey, it is Christmas and I can wish for whatever I want!

Have a great one peeps…Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world…enjoy the Leafs and Bruins tonight if you go to the game. GO LEAFS GO

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps – just because I heard it this morning…and with the snowy weather, it was both mesmerizing and blinding at the same time.

I Go Blind – 54/40 (later covered by Hootie and the Blowfish…if you don’t know the significance – then you don’t know Hazel).

A Whacked Wednesday To Be Sure

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking - from those of you that have been here before and know what Wednesdays are about on this blog - to those of you that have happened upon this page for the first time and are wondering to yourself, "What the...?" As always, a special hey goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

For those of you that haven't been here before, Wednesday entries look back at the weird, the whacked and the downright silly from the world of sports over the past seven days or so - comments on this weeks highlights/lowlights, or suggestions on what I may have missed are always welcome - do you hear me Adam? (yes, my boy Adam from Hazelspeeps is back - he always has some insightful comments...and Jody Vance updates. I'm biting my tongue on the latter). So...where to start - why not in the place that Hazel now calls home, Boston.

THE NATION HAS SPOKEN
Red Sox Nation is still in the anger stage of coping with the revelation that Johnny "Jesus" Damon has left for the hated MYF (Motherf**king Yankees - their term, not mine). As I mentioned earlier today, the message board posts ranged from:
  • lambasting Damon for turning his back on the city of Boston;
  • to trashing Damon for being a noodle-armed hipster doofus who wasn't as good as he thought he was;
  • to calling for the heads of the Red Sox Upper Management; and much much more.
Speaking of Upper Management - Jed Hoyer, Ben Cherington and Larry Lucchino were on the hotseat today with the media - having to answer questions on everything ranging from "Did Damon give you the opportunity to match?" to "Would you have matched?" to "Where are you going from here?" To their credit, all three handled things reasonably well - especially when you consider they had to know that those asking the questions were probably thinking that these guys were more "Larry, Moe and Curly" than a Senior Management Team of a storied franchise like God's Red Sox...oops, I mean the Boston Red Sox.

The Nation is asking some very good questions of their management team - I draw the line at criticizing Damon. I think it is rather unfair for fans in Boston to criticize Damon for leaving for a few extra bucks - it was twelve freaking million dollars! We aren't talking a few extra bucks an hour - it was TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS he left for. If you think that isn't a big deal, then why didn't Boston cough it up? I am positive that missing out on TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS would be a lot easier for John Henry to take that it would be for Johnny Damon. Johnny Damon went to play in Boston for money...remember people? He was a Kansas City Royal and an Oakland A's player before he was lured to Boston by money...this shouldn't be a surprise.

As one of the millions and millions of people who count the Sox as their favourite American League team, I am going to try to say this in the most courteous and respectful way I can. You can't possibly tell me that any athlete playing professional sports should forgo millions of dollars to stay in any city to play for those fans. The decision to leave a baseball team for another (albeit for money) should not be an indictment on someone's character - these are professional athletes, its their job - we all leave jobs for better jobs and promotions (Right Hazel???) and we aren't hated for it...are we? As sports fans, we may hate our rival teams (hello Ottawa Senatards), but these athletes don't care, its not their issue - they haven't grown up hating our rivals. A lot of these athletes weren't big fans or students of the game growing up - because they were too busy immersing themselves in the game to get to that level - playing so much that they never had time to become anything more than casual fans of teams - but rather big fans of a few role models. Sure when they are playing for our cheers and affection they will claim to hate the bad guys...but its just business, we may not like it, but it really is nothing personal against the fans. (Hazel's Canadian peeps didn't take it personally when she left Rogers for NESN...grrrrrrrr).

These guys aren't going to leave millions of dollars on the table for the affections of sports fans in a city that they quite likely will not live in after their careers - do you think Johnny Damon would retire to live in Boston? I don't think so...so I don't think he would give up millions of dollars to be a god-like figure for a few more years and on the occasional trip back to Boston.

Check the lifestyle these guys lead, they aren't living in 3 bedroom houses in the suburbs, driving Honda Accords or CRVs...they aren't going to the neighbourhood pub for dinner - and you can sure as hell bet they aren't going to the local mall to cash in on Christmas sales - these guys need serious dough to maintain the lifestyle they have grown accustomed to. I am not justifying it, I'm just saying that I understand it.

Funny thing about sports fans who claim to love their heroes...they are the first ones to boo and hate these guys the second they are in a slump - or heaven forbid, on their first trip back to the park, when they have left.

I am not saying I agree with Free Agency (hello? Hazel leaves Canada for NESN...hatin' it) - but I accept it. The players make the game, they are entitled to be compensated - it is not up to us to determine how much is enough...what we can do is say "we aren't going to buy tickets anymore"...but that won't happen anytime soon; so accept the fact that players play for money and they are going after as much as they can.

Speaking of getting as much as they can. Ex Baltimore Oriole Sidney Ponson signed a one year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. I found this to be rather weird; consider that Ponson has had run-ins with the law over drinking and driving - and he is signing to play in a city that his home to the Anheiser Busch Brewery. Good luck Sidney.

As an aside - I should probably be embarassed to admit this...but I'm diggin' this new "Laffy Taffy" song.

J.R. WON'T SHUT UP
I am not sure how much play Jeremy Roenick is getting down there - but up here, his mug has been all over the Score, TSN and Sportsnet. I saw Roenick griping last night about who "You guys will write whatever "BEEP" you "BEEPIN" want about me...I've got nothing to "BEEPIN" prove to you guys. I'm waiting for him to go back on Jim Rome or something and do his Linda Richman (Coffee Talk) impersonation while he apologizes to everyone.

SID THE KID SENT TO HIS ROOM
The roster spots for Team Canada were announced this afternoon - the Next One (aka Sidney Crosby) was left off the team - no real explanations were given; but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that old-school guys like Gretzky, Pat Quinn (who Hazel probably knows), Ken Hitchcock and Jacques Martin probably don't like Sid's big mouth. While the NHL has been marketing the hell out of this kid - he's getting on some people's nerves -
  • he gripes about officiating
  • he embellishes/dives
  • he showboats sometimes
These can be forgiven easily enough - after all, he is going to be a great player. "What was his biggest crime?" you may be asking yourselves...When the Penguins let go of former Maple Leaf Eddie Olczyk (Hazel would remember the Leafs of the 80's - firewagon hockey), Crosby's comment was something to the effect that it was time for a change. These old-school coaches could not have taken too kindly to that. Sidney Crosby, a kid that has been scripted, coached and trained on how to speak to the media really blew this one. Say what you will, but Sentards' Center Jason Spezza has always said the right thing. Hey Sid, have fun on Spring Break in Florida...it could have been Turin.

One more thing about the good old NHL - last week, Gary Bettman announced that original revenue projections were conservative and that the league was doing so well that revenues were up and next year's salary cap would be increased by $1 - $5 Million. My question is this, with so many teams drawing so poorly (Florida, Islanders, Devils, Nashville etc) - where is all this revenue coming from? The Canadian teams? The Rangers? The Flyers? The Red Wings? Not sure how this one is going to play out...but I see a revolt coming from some of the "have teams".

Anyone hear that the Yankees luxury tax for 2005 was $34M - man George must have been heated. How does Brian Cashman have a job? Oh wait, he's got Jesus on his side. Sorry Red Sox Nation. Speaking of luxury tax, the Sox got hit with a relatively paltry bill for $4M.

REMEMBER HIS NAME STARTS WITH ARSE

For anyone that follows the English Premier League - you know my man Jose Mourinho has rattled cages and tweaked the British media since his arrival 18 months ago. Mourinho has also had some public arguments with old farts like Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, and Arsene Wenger of Arsenal (see an emerging theme/pattern?). After last Sunday's game vs. Portuguese National Team North (aka Chelsea), Jose refused to shake Wenger's hand; with good reason. It seems that Mr. Wenger snubbed Mourinho before the game, and also refused to acknowledge a Christmas card sent to him by my man Jose. Bad form Arsene...So you say you are French huh Arse? Can I call you Arse?

TAKE IT OUTSIDE
In what can only be seen as silly - James Toney and Hassim Rahman got into a fight in a hotel lobby in Mexico. Why don't these two just sign a deal to fight in a damn ring.

Well, that's about it for now I think. Hope tonight's entry was somewhat informative, or at least good enough for a chuckle or two.

Have a great one peeps...Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world!

Before I forget...On the fourth day of Christmas I wish Hazel would give to me, four playoff round victories for the Leafs this spring.

The Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - for what some Red Sox fans must have been thinking this morning and even into the night (with the hopes of a failed physical for Johnny Damon)

Johnny Come Home - Fine Young Cannibals
Johnny, won't you come on home
We worry

or...if you are one of the angry members of Red Sox Nation

The Most Whacked Wednesday Yet!

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

Its Wednesday and if you have been here before you know what it means – last night, I thought the perfect story to lead off a Weird, Whacked and Downright Silly Wednesday entry would be the news that Jeremy Roenick – after griping about being left of the Team USA Roster for Turin – revealed he would be missing 4 – 6 weeks with a broken finger. Like I said, that WAS going to be the morning entry…but then, HEEEEEERE”S JOHNNY.

Yes, Johnny “Jesus” Damon announced late last night that he had signed a 4-year $52M contract with the Evil Empire. If you are in Canada, have a quick look-see at the message boards on Boston.com or Red Sox Nation to see how upset The Nation is – this is the ultimate betrayal. The arguments range from bitterness and frustration (no loyalty to the city of Boston) to sour grapes (he was done anyways and the Yanks overpaid) to calls for blood (fire the new GMs, Henry should sell the team) to the absolutely ridiculous (one person on bostom.com board claimed that it was typical of the Yankees, buying Championships – conveniently forgetting that Damon, Ramirez, Ortiz, Schilling, Martinez, and a bunch of other “idiots” came from other teams) – and finally to those who have moved on (“I wanted Coco Crisp anyways, get Torii Hunter, get Jeremy Reed). The Nation is up in arms, and with very good reason. I will say this though…the silver lining? Manny isn’t going anywhere…there is no way the Sox Management is going to trade Manny…as a matter of fact, I see RAMADA coming. They are going to do something, to answer this latest signing by the Yankees…while everyone is talking Clemens…I see something happening with Tejada – don’t ask me why.

Alright, I’m outta here for a Christmas “Beer and Pizza” lunch at the famous “P”. Hazel, if you are ever in town, I will treat you to be best square pie this side of the U.S. border – oh yeah, they serve quarts too!

HAZEL’S WEDNESDAY HOROSCOPE
Do things with others today. Even if you have to work, put a little time aside. The conversations you have today will be profound and will get you thinking in a whole new way about your approach to the new year. 3 stars

Have a great one peeps…Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world on what is no doubt a weird, whacked and crazy Wednesday in New England.

Song of the Morning on Hazelspeeps – to sum up how Red Sox Nation must be feeling this morning, with the news that “Jesus” left the city he loved…the city and fans that made him a folk hero…back to the 80’s for the Ultra-Cheezy

Christmas Wishes - Not Too Late

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

I was going to finish writing and post "The Economics of RAMADA" - why I think that the Boston Red Sox can and will acquire Miguel Tejada...while keeping Manny Ramirez. But tonight, just for one night, I'm going to step back from the silliness of the economics of sports and ask that you take a few minutes to consider the economics of life.

This is the time of year we look to do things for others - "The season of giving..." as some refer to it. You can't turn on a television without seeing one of our local sports figures doing charitable work - for kids, for the sick, for the underprivileged. Many of us, in our places of work, are being called upon to help a family in need at Christmas time.

My office is collecting food and cash to help a needy family this Christmas - there is a sign posted outside a baffle of one of my co-workers "Help Our Christmas Family", and I have to say that I am embarrassed to be associated with this bunch of clowns. I looked at this little grocery bag on the floor with four or five packs of those freeze dried noodles and not much else.

Look I'm not here to pontificate or preach...this page is about sports and silliness - but lets take a timeout to consider things. We are quick to donate to victims of natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina being the last one in the US - remember the Mannings?); we donate to causes across the world at the request of people like Bono and Bob Geldolf...yet we often forget about those people in our own communities...its not right peeps - they need our help.

I was so friggin pissed that I went out tonight and did the damn groceries myself (in addition to what I give every week to my local food bank - not much, but about 5 - 10 bucks a week). If your office or place of work is collecting for a family, please give - or give to your local foodbank. We are often quick to say 20 bucks won't get you anything... but tonight 25 bucks got

some staples like pasta, rice, peanut butter, jam, pancake mix
soap and toothpaste
and a few treats for the kids

A quick check of the bathroom cabinets turned up a few bottles of shampoo and other hygienic products. You would be surprised how much 50 bucks means to a family in need. I'm going to shut up now and ask you to consider the following:

If you work, why not buy $1 of food or household products for every $1,000 you make - if you can...if you can't afford it right now...why not make a new year's resolution to put in $1 or $2 bucks worth of stuff every week in your local food bank's bins? Anything helps peeps...think about it.

I think Hazel Mae (if she is checking in) would approve of this non-sports related entry.

The only sports related item in this post is related to the 12 days of Christmas

On the fifth day of Christmas I wish Hazel gave to me - five decent starting pitchers for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

That's about it for tonight...check back in tomorrow for the Weird, the Whacked and the downright silly in the world of sports.

Have a great one peeps. Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world...and I hope you would approve of this one.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps -

Do They Know Its Christmas - Band Aid (ya, I know it was written for those in Africa...but it applies here to some extent).

Mixed News On Tuesday

Hey Peeps, and anyone else checking in. A special “hey” goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae.

Tuesday brings a mixed bag of news – unfortunately some of it not of the “ha ha” kind. Condolences go out to Mr. Walter Gretzky and family. Mrs. Phyllis Gretzky lost her battle with cancer yesterday, leaving behind her husband Walter, five children (the most notable being Wayne) and 12 grandchildren. If you are a hockey fan, you have to want pass along your condolences to Wayne Gretzky and family. The Phoenix Coyotes website might be your first point of reference to pass along a card, email or voicemail to the Gretzkys.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED
Yesterday at the ACC, Eddie Belfour recorded his 448th win against the New York Islanders. The win, while not a pretty one – having given up six goals - still moves Eddie the Eagle past former Maple Leaf Terry Sawchuk (who many consider to be the best of all time). Belfour isn’t likely to come close to overall Wins Leader Patrick Roy, who recorded 551 victories. Good for Belfour, one of the NHL’s fiercest competitors – note to all Leaf haters, Don’t even start with talk about Belfour’s competitive streak…its his day, let him enjoy it.

BLACKBALLED? BLUEBALLED? OR JUST PLAIN BALLS?
Jeremy Roenick is at it again. Team America (hehehe, I’m sure Canadian readers see the humour in that) named its roster for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Roenick lambasted USA Hockey, stating that their decision to leave him off the team had more to do with punishing him for not participating in the last two World Cups, than a reflection of his sup par stats and possibly having lost a step – Roenick used the term “blackballing”. To know J.R. is to want to shove a dunkin’ donut (given that he is a Boston native) or something else in that big mouth of his to shut his word hole. Once again, Roenick has put his own interests ahead of the interests of his team and his country –

“I'm one of the guys that have gotten the USA to where it is today."

"To not have the opportunity to go back one more time and try and win the gold is obviously, in my opinion, very disrespectful,"

"There's nobody on the Olympic team that's scored more points than I have, who's had a career like I've had in terms of physicality and putting points on the board and being a leader,"

Gee, and you wonder why a guy like J.R. has never won a Stanley Cup…I mean, with selfless leadership qualities like this - oh yeah, in case you were wondering, Roenick “was pleased” that his team mate Craig Conroy made the team. I am willingly bet that Roenick comes out before the Olympics and says he is going for Team Canada…count on it. Speaking of which…Hazel, you are pulling for Team Canada right? I mean…you still associate more with Team Canada right?

BOLLIN ‘EM OVER
Kyle Boller of the Ravens gets a Hazie for his performance against Green Bay last night. He threw a couple of ducks up there last night, but the still managed to throw for 253 yards and 3 TDs.

HAZEL’S TUESDAY HOROSCOPE
Your excitement is mounting, and all your plans can be considered completed. A romantic encounter will make you realize how lucky you are. A new direction will turn out to be better than you imagined. 5 stars

A new direction? You mean like a click from here over to Hazelspeeps at yahoo? A Holiday message to the peeps? Hahahaha I know, I know.

Well, I’m wrapping this up for this afternoon…I’ve got a few things to get done here before a 7.5 km run after work – its actually nice here today, a bit overcast with an air temp of -2 C with no wind.

Have a great one peeps….Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps…for Jeremy Roenick who wanted to be part of Team America (hehehe) the Torino Edition – dance music classic from the 80’s…from three hot Latinas (Cubans)..worth the download. I’m sure Hazel has heard and grooved to it.

Monday's Heroes and The "Runners Up"

Hey peeps, and anyone else checking in...from those of you that check in regularly to see who gets a Hazie...to those of you that have happened on this page for the first time - Monday's posts highlight a few of the more notable performances in the world of sports from the past seven days or so (NFL, NHL, MLB and European Soccer garner most of the attention).

A special "hey" goes out to Ms. Hazel Mae, here's hoping she would agree to hand out the hardware to this week's winners and "runners up". (how is that for showing Christmas spirit? No Zeros or "Not-So-Heroic" this week)

It was one ugly weekend in the NFL - well, at least it was for me, Hazel and anyone else who is a fan of the Cowboys or the Chiefs...while you are at it, throw fans of the Colts in there too, they must be one worried bunch right about now. If they aren't worried yet, point them to Dan Shaughnessy's column in today's edition of the Boston Globe. Seems like Mr. Shaughnessy and I were thinking the same thing when we were writing this past weekend. What's that old saying - Great minds think alike. Please, no smart remarks on that one. Let's just chalk it up to the notion that some of my ideas aren't so nuts...

THIS WEEK'S NOTABLES - THE HEROES

NFL
Matt Hasselbeck of the Seahawks just keeps rolling along - this week against the Tennessee Titans. The Seahawks pivot was 21/27 for 285 yards and 3 TDs. What made it more impressive was Tennessee's record against teams visiting for the first time - it was something like 21 - 4. He doesn't get enough credit, but there aren't many playing as well as he is right now.

Tom Brady of the Patriots (Hazel's Patriots?) is playing like he is in the playoffs. Brady, who is arguably one of the three best players in the NFL (LaDanian Tomlinson and a healthy Ray Lewis would get plenty of votes) has been torching some good teams over the past few weeks - the latest victims a very good Tampa Bay Buccaneers D. Brady was a very efficient 20/31 for 258 yards and 3 TDs. New England is in very good hands.

Drew Brees of the Chargers lead his team into the RCA Dome and beat the Colts - that right there gets him a Hazie. While his numbers weren't outstanding - 22/33 for 255 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs - he did it without a healthy LaDanian Tomlinson. Brees gets some hardware.

Other notable performances from QBs (though not quite there in terms of getting an award from Hazel) include:

  • Carson Palmer - 2 INTs were his undoing (and playing the Lions);
  • Jake Plummer - the Manager managed;
  • Steve McNair, Brooks Bollinger and Peyton Manning - all of whom couldn't lead their teams to wins.

Tiki Barber of the Giants ran all over someone's team (no, I'm not naming names - that brings me bad karma). Barber rushed 29 times for 220 yards and 2 TDs - a lot of those yards came in clutch situations and for first downs. While Tiki had some great runs - the Chiefs tackling was atrocious to put it mildly...if that didn't make Vermeil cry, I don't know what would.

Shaun Alexander of the Seahawks had another great game - this week against the Titans. Alexander rushed 26 times for 172 yards and a TD.

Other notable performances from RBs this past weekend -
  • Larry Johnson (from you know who's team) - another great game goes for not;
  • Rudi Johnson - good numbers, but he was playing the Lions;
  • LaMont Jordan - You big dummy Lamont - 132 yards and not 1 TD? (if you don't remember Sanford and Son...never mind);
  • Clinton Portis - ya ya, but he didn't score a TD;
  • Michael Turner - clutch 83 yard TD against the Colts - but only 8 carries.

David Givens of the Patriots was the only receiver to have a great game in a victory. Givens caught 6 passes for 137 yards and 1 TD - against Ronde Barber and Co.

Other notable performances from WRs and TEs this past weekend -
  • Chad Johnson - 11 catches and 1 TD, but only 99 yards.
  • Anquan Boldin, Marvin Harrison, Ben Troupe - all in losing efforts.
  • Rod Smith good numbers, but he fumbled once...and he plays with Plummer.
Shawn Merriman of the Chargers, I watched the game yesterday - he made Manning miserable. Tonight on ESPN's Monday Night pre-game show, Ron Jaworski highlighted what Merriman did to the Colts yesterday - he looked like Lawrence Taylor, and the late great Derrick Thomas of Hazel's Chiefs.

Marcus Washington of the Redskins pretty much killed the Cowboys yesterday...I'd rather not discuss this anymore.

NHL
This past week was a great week for goalies in the NHL - well, pretty much everyone but Eddie Belfour.

Roberto Luongo posted a record of 3-1 with a GAA of 2.25 and a save percentage of .942 - when you play for the Panthers...that's saying a lot.

Other notables in the "new, high flying" NHL this week included:

  • Martin Biron of the Buffalo Sabres...3-0-0, 2.98 GAA;

  • Martin Gerber of the Carolina Hurricanes... 3-0-0, 1.67 GAA; and

  • Michael Garnett of the Atlanta Thrashers...3-0-0, 2.92 GAA.

EUROPEAN SOCCER
Brazilian sensation Ronaldinho won his second consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year award. Widely regarded as the most electrifying player in the last 10 - 20 years...Ronaldinho is really one of the good guys in the world of soccer. Other notables who have won this award include - you got it...Luis Figo.

Michael Owen of Newcastle United had three goals this past Saturday in leading the Magpies to a 4-2 victory against West Ham.

THE RUNNERS UP

As I said earlier, there are no Zeros or “Not-So-Heroic” – after all, it is the Christmas season…so we are calling them “Runners Up”.

My Dallas Cowboys were awful – the whole damn team. The offence was anemic, the defence looked like they were overmatched and confused and Billy Cundiff’s missed field goal in the first quarter really took any wind out of Dallas’ sails. As a matter of fact, the only positive I took away came courtesy of Keyshawn Johnson – yes Keyshawn. He showed me something on Sunday, he really does care…enough to call out the kicker for a bad miss.

Hazel’s Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t beat a depleted Giants team – missing two linebackers, starting a rookie MLB, injuries on the offensive line…and still the Chiefs couldn’t win.

In the English Premier League, Middlesborough couldn’t pull out a win at home against a struggling Tottenham Hotspur. Middlesborough not only blew three leads, they blew two of my Pro-Line tickets and potential winnings of over $400 (enough to buy a pair of hot golf cleats for Christmas – if you don’t get the humour in that…Hazel would).

I refuse to put the Maple Leafs in this category…EVER.

Well, that’s about all I have for now. I hope Hazel would agree with tonight’s winners and those who didn’t quite make it. I’m outta here for the night.

Have a great one peeps. Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Evening on Hazelspeeps…for FIFA’s World Player of the Year – Ronaldinho. He’s kinda funny looking – with the trademark overbite; ut he is a shining example of “The Beautiful Game”.

You Are So Beautiful – Joe Cocker

What? Yes…for Ronaldinho’s game. Who else would that song be for?
