Monday's Hazies - The Champs & Chumps

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

For those of you who haven't been here before, The Hazies take a look back at the week that was in the world of sports and single out some of the outstanding performances. The lucky few are awarded a Hazie and have the title of "Hazel's Hero" bestowed upon them - which is better than any recognition they may have gotten. While Hazel hasn't officially approved this week's winners, especially not from the NHL we would like to think that she'd give her trademark smile and thumbs up to our nominees.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE CHAMPS

NHL

The NHL named this week's three stars - we're hoping Hazel would join Leaf Nation is giving a thumbs down to the first and third stars.

New York Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist was named the First Star for posting a 4-0-0 record with 0.72 goals against average and a .974 save percentage. Lundqvist has lifted the once sad-sack Rangers into a playoff spot - on behalf of Leaf Nation, let me be the first to give Lundqvist the raspberry.

San Jose Sharks RW Johnathan Cheechoo was named the Second Star for scoring six goals and adding two assists in three road games. Cheechoo should be sharing this star with Big Joe Thornton.

Montreal Canadiens G Jaroslav Halak was named the Third Star - blah blah blah.

As a member in good standing of Leaf Nation, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Toronto Maple Leafs RW/D Wade Belak who remembered what his job was and sent New Jersey Devils meathead Cam Janssen a message last Tuesday night. See the picture from last Wednesday morning's post.

FOOTBALL
This morning we mentioned that Portugal Winger Cristiano Ronaldo was one of Hazel's Stars from the weekend - wanna know why? Check out the goal he scored on Saturday night - tell me this guy isn't one of the best players on the planet. This guy is a champ in every sense of the world, and he is going to prove it one day in the maroon jersey with the shields! Ronaldo vs Belgium - SICK!

Portugal's other winger Ricardo Quaresma set up Ronaldo's first goal with a beautiful cross to the goal line - as I mentioned this morning, he terrorized the Belgian defence and was a factor for the 67 minutes he was on the field. Wanna know how much of a factor? Check out this beauty - the sweetest goal of the night.

HAZEL'S ZEROS - THE CHUMPS

NHL

The officiating in the NHL has been an absolute disgrace this year - collectively, the NHL's officials have broken their credo; they have always said they are not there to influence the game's outcome, but rather to manage the game and enforce the rules. This year, it seems like their decisions, or lack their of, have had a major impact on the results. I have not seen a year like this ever - referees standing 10 feet away from major infractions and nothing gets called - but don't you dare put your stick on another player's arm, because you'll be in the box for interference or hooking. Now if you want to take a guy's head off and put him out of the game with a concussion - that's A-Ok to the zebras. Disgraceful doesn't begin to explain their work this year.

FOOTBALL

Belgium's goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen was investigated for comments he made to a newspaper days before Saturday's game in Lisbon - Stijnen was quoted as saying that Belgium would have to attack Cristiano Ronaldo so much that he would have to leave the pitch. Stijnen of course claimed that he was misquoted - the article is here. Go back and check out Ronaldo's goal on youtube - you can see Stijnen look back at Ronaldo while he is sprawled on the ground - what a dickhead, DON'T MESS WITH THE SHIELDS!

That's about it for tonight - gotta get on yahoo and start working up a draft list for the Hazelspeeps Fantasy Baseball League.

Have a great one peeps!

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.
