Phony As A Three Dollar Bill

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The San Jose Sharks were shut out last night by Dominik "Robotron" Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit's game plan was clear from the drop of the puck - survive the first ten minutes of the game without giving the opposing team and their fans anything to get excited about. The Sharks came out hitting the Red Wings at every turn in hope that they could dictate the pace of the game - it worked early on as they generated a few turnovers that led to some good scoring opportunities, but Hasek was there to frustrate them with the big save. As mentioned, the Red Wings scored two goals late in the first period and spent the rest of the night playing kitty bar the door. The Sharks will look back on this series as one they should have won (in four games if you ask me) and will be left to answer questions on what went wrong - luckily for them, the questions in California will likely last a few days...they'd be meat if they were in Canada. And so, the counterfeit Red Wings move on to Conference Finals against Anaheim - another week to ten days of hearing how Detroit is Hockeytown USA...that carries as much weight and significance as saying that Maple Ridge, BC is "Baseball-town Canada".

Team Canada scored eight seconds into their game with the United States en route to a 6-3 win in a game where the final score was not indicative of how lopsided the game was. Canada's Jay McClement scored eight seconds into the game, the quickest goal ever scored at the Championship from the start of the game, and the boys in red and white never looked back. Canada completely dominated the U.S., jumping out to a 4-0 lead, and except for a brief stretch in the second period were never really challenged. Canada moves on to play Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

In the majors league baseball, Red Sox West got back on track last night with a 6-1 victory over the Florida Marlins in a game where Brad Penny dominated his former team - striking out 14 in seven innings of work. The win was a welcome sight to members of "Big Blue", especially after having watch them lose two games in Atlanta this weekend in a series they should have won - Dodgers fans will think they could have swept the series, especially after letting John Smoltz off the hook a few times on Friday night.

The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Boston Red Sox (sans Hazel we are assuming) tonight - maybe J.P. Ricciardi and Theo Epstein can console each other with stories about how they just can't compete with the Yankees on a financial basis.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS

Team Canada's Matthew Lombardi had a hat-trick in Canada's 6-3 beatdown of the US.

Red Sox West P Brad Penny overpowered his former team last night pitching seven shutout innings, giving up six hits and striking out 14 Marlins in the Dodgers 6-1 win.

Milwaukee Brewers P Chris Capuano won his fifth straight decision last night - shutting out the Nationals over eight innings, giving up seven hits and striking out nine.

If you read yesterday's entry, you know that we picked both Penny and Capuano on the Three Play.

TUESDAY THREE PLAY
The Sharks loss prevented us from starting the week a perfect 3-0 - instead we settle for a 2-1 start with the balance sheet at + $55 to start the week. Tonight's suggestions

Boston over Toronto - Josh Beckett takes the mound tonight, and while some may be tempted to think that Beckett has to lose eventually - it won't happen tonight; the Sox should generate enough offence against Victor Zambrano to get Beckett a win tonight. Lay $100 on the Sox - $185.

Detroit over Seattle - we'll take another big favourite tonight in Bonderman to win over Horatio Ramirez and the Mariners. Lay $100 on the Tigers - $185.

NY Yankees over Texas - Andy Pettitte takes the mound for New York tonight - he should be able to get it done against Texas tonight. Lay $100 on the Yankees - $245.

That's about it for this morning gang - have a great one peeps.

HAZEL'S TUESDAY HOROSCOPE
It's time to do something just for yourself. You may get complaints but that shouldn't bother you. Instead, let whoever is complaining join in or wait until you've finished. 2 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - because I'm meeting my girl "B" today for lunch
