The Chase Continues

Two big stories from MLB this morning - one an interest story, one that will have an impact on the A.L. East Pennant race.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley ran his hit streak to 33 games last night against St. Louis. In a year where nothing has gone right for Philadelphia, at least Phillies' fan have something to look forward to. We won't talk about the questionable home town scoring call on Monday against the Marlins - I think Utley's single was actually an error on Marlins' 2B Dan Uggla.

Bad news for Red Sox fans - Gordon Edes, of the Boston Globe, reported last night that Sox C Jason Varitek will be sidelined for at least a month - Varitek will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. This one could be a crushing blow for the Sox in their race with New York in the A.L. East. I would hate to be Theo Epstein this morning - you know this one is going to come back on him for not making a trade. It is time for Coco Crisp and Willy Mo Pena to really step it up in Varitek's absence. While you are at it - throw in the names of Kevin Youkilis and David Wells too. I'm not saying the Sox are done - not when they have Ortiz in the lineup; but some guys really have to step up their game.

Former Blue Jays farmhand Casey Blake hit his third HR in two days against Boston last night - I'm thinking Hazel would want to acknowledge that.

If chicks dig the long ball - they must really be diggin' Tigers' SS Carlos Guillen who hit for the cycle last night against Tampa Bay.
