JFJ - Wanna Meet Tilt?
Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae if she is checking in.
Over the weekend, we looked at the reaction of Hockey God Brian Burke on Edmonton's offer to Anaheim F Dustin Penner - Burke characterized it as a move by a desperate GM who is worried about keeping his job. Well, it seems like Leaf Nation is dealing with the same issue in Toronto.
The latest news from Toronto is that John Ferguson Jr. is trying to trade 23 year old C Matt Stajan in order to free cap space to sign FA C Michael Peca, who broke his leg last year and missed most of the season. We're all for signing a character guy like Peca for a bargain basement price - but at the expense of a 23 year old kid who has proven that he is a capable third or fourth line center? We are at a loss to figure out what JFJ is thinking in this case - it makes absolutely no sense...but then again, this pretty much sums up JFJ's tenure in Toronto. The next time we see his dumb mug talking about "the future of the franchise" and "building a winner through scouting and development" we are going down to Toronto to find him...and Tilt is going to dust off his black belt a deliver a thunderous round house kick to the side of his stupid melon. For those of you that didn't know - Tilt's a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Other things occupying our thoughts today
We're looking forward to hearing what Ron Mexico's "co-defendant" has to say today as he is expected to enter a guilty plea.
Many thanks to the few, the proud, and the delusional who emailed us to point out the irony of Freddy Adu signing with Benfica of Lisbon after we raked him over the coals for his play at the Under-20 World Championship. First off, they are talking about a transfer...it hasn't been confirmed yet. Second, if they do, its only about how much money they can make off of him - they are willing to pay $2M US which amounts to nothing; you have to think Benfica would get a big piece of Adu's endorsement money when Nike starts pushing the American playing in Europe. Third, get over yourselves guys - we won't be an impact player...and it isn't a stepping stone to the Premiership, the Primera Liga or Serie A. But we're glad you took note.
We're tired of hearing the talk (yes, its been less that 24 hours) about the Asterisk hitting his 755th HR in Los Angeles...its not going to happen, not at Dodger Stadium.
WEDNESDAY'S THREE STARS
The Big Z, Carlos Zambrano pitched 7.1 solid innings, shutting the Reds out on two hits and three walks while striking out six. The Big Z becomes the majors' first 14 game winner...oh where have you gone Josh Beckett????
Atlanta Braves 3B Larry Jones drives in five runs with one hit and a couple of sac flys - not a great day by any stretch...but five RBI with one hit? It is worth a mention.
Former Red Sox CF Johnny Damon had three hits, two runs and scored four times in the Yankees' 10-6 win over the O's. We feel bad for Johnny who is having a bad season...so we have to show him some love today.
MONDAY THREE PLAY
We'll add up last week's total later. Three quick suggestions.
Los Angeles over Seattle - battle of former Blue Jays P, Kelvim Escobar and Miguel Batista. We'll take Escobar every time. Lay $100 on the Angels - $130 (we know...we know...Anaheim based team).
Toronto over Tampa Bay - Andy Sonnanstine has been getting pummeled by everyone...Dustin McGowan has not. Lay $100 on the Jays - $135.
Minnesota over Kansas City - the edge goes to Gil Meche...but we like the Twins at home today. Lay $100 on the Twins - $120.
That's it for today gang...thanks for taking the time to check in. Have a great one peeps!
Hazel, we hope things are groovy in your world.
We're out.
