Will The Red Sox Trade For Johan Santana?

I heard this rumor on a local sports radio station.

The Red Sox trading for Minnesota Twins ace Johan Santana who is slated to become a free agent in 2008.

Panelists made up of local sports writers said that they (the writers) would to keep him away from the Yankees.

The panelists made the following points.

Twins are expected to part ways with free agent centerfielder Torii Hunter this offseason and will be in need of a centerfielder.

Red Sox have CoCo Crisp who is very affordable in contract terms with 2 years and an club option year. CoCo is great defensively and an "okay" hitter. Crisp is likely to be traded because rookie Jacoby Ellsbury is a better hitter-faster and cheaper than Crisp.

The writers said they would trade: Crisp,Clay Buchholz and John Lester for Santana. They said Boston could sign Santana with all the money reserves they have.

You know what youre going to get with Santana but you really don't know what your getting with Buchholz. Also the Yankees are likely to trade for Santana this offseason so the Red Sox would have to act fast or they'll risk having to face Johan Santana 5 times a year.

Interesting stuff to ponder.

The sox should definitely make this trade. Santana is always a Cy Young candidate every year and with a front three of Beckett, Santana, and Dice-K, how are other teams going to get a hit? If we make this trade, at least two of the three will have a perfect game and or no hitter. Just wait and see

Nate-
Here's my take.
The Boston Red Sox will wait to see if Alex Rodriguez pots out of his contract with the NY Yankees.
He has 10 days after the end of the World Series to do so.
Everyone in the MLB expects him to opt out.
Red Sox owners NOT GM Theo Epstein will call Boras to see what the bids are and "kick the tires" on ARod.
WHAT THE RED SOX WILL DO:
Sign ARod for 10 years.
They're looking ahead for when Manny's contract is up.
Ramirez is scheduled to make $20 million in 2008 and the Red Sox hold club options for Manny for
'09 and '10 at $20 million each.
The Red Sox could concievably trade Manny for a stud starter.

The Red Sox will not trade anything for Santana. Why give up Buchholz and Lester if you can wait a year and have Santana join them?
