Hey all - to those of you checking in from the US, ya we Canadians celebrate American Thanksgiving - we may not do the deep-fried turkey, but we take the day off from work to watch some football...though I'm guessing Hazel Mae isn't taking the day off to watch.

Lots to be thankful for here - Leafs back on track and the Cowboys are going to lay a beating on the Dolphins tomorrow...a "mahi-mahi thanksgiving" in big D

Hazel's return to Sportsnet coincided with a rough patch for the "Maeple Leafs" - thankfully, the boys got things sorted out tonight against the Caps to stop the bleeding.

Unbelievable win - 7-1 over the Caps, while missing seven starters. The Monster finally played like one, and the line of Kessel - Bozak - Lupul were on fire tonight.

Three picks for your NFL Sunday

Cowboys -7 over REDSKINS - the Boys are rolling right now, while the Skins are just plain reeling. Forget the rivalry angle, the division match-up angle or anything other angle some wiseguy might want to sell you on. The Cowboys roll over the Skins.

BEARS -3.5 over Chargers - see above explanation, the wheels have fallen off in San Diego - not good when you are facing the Bears D in Chicago. The Chargers offense is a mess and the D couldn't stop Hazel from running for 6 or 7 yards on every handoff. Bears win...not big, but they cover.

GIANTS -5.5 over the Eagles - I just threw up in my mouth...picking the freakin' Giants. The Eagles are terrible, and they just got a whole lot worse with the news that Vince Young "Mr. Dream Team" is starting. The Cowboys will overtake the Giants and win the division...they just have to wait another week to catch the Giants.

Way back when, a regular entry on this blog was a weekly look back at the Champs and Chumps from the week that was in the world of sports. It is time for another look back at the week or so that was from around the world. This week's entry is in honour of my man Jose Mourinho, coach of Inter Milan - who the British person affectionately/sarcastically refer to as "The Special One". Jose tops the list of Hazel's Heroes this week.

Jose Mourinho is on the verge of leading Internationale Milan to their most successful season ever. Favourites to win UEFA's Champions League final, the Serie A Championship, and the Coppa Italia. He's lead Champions in Portugal (FC Porto), England (Chelsea) and Italia (Inter Milan) - in his own words, he is a "top manager". He says that he isn't ready to manage the Portuguese National Team yet - maybe in 10 years. A nation hopes he changes his mind and makes it much sooner.

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins absolutely destroyed the Ottawa SenaTards, knocking them out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He'll get plenty of love here and from the rest of Leaf Nation for doing that.

Speaking of Special Ones

Ya...just because.

And now we'll leave the lovely Hazel Mae to move on to the "not so special ones" - normally referred to as "Hazel's Zeros".

Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau was observed to have been very nervous prior to game 7 of the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the stinking Montreal Canadians (spelled incorrectly on purpose because it annoys Habs fans). Maybe Boudreau knew that he was overmatched by Jacques Martin - when you are overmatched by that guy...ugh. Maybe he knew his team would lay an egg and blow a 3-1 games lead in the series.

Whatever the case - this guy got way too much credit when the Caps turned things around a couple of years ago...he deserves all the blame for this monumental collapse.

Leaf Nation (which we still count Hazel as a member in good standing) want the media to stop talking about this guy being a former Maple Leaf player.

Hazel's Olympians - the Divers

Montreal Canadians forward Maxim Lapierre put on an embarrassing and pathetic display in game six against the Washington Capitals - he took diving to a new level, when he was hit straight on, and threw himself into the boards face first. The 180 degree turn and leap was more reminiscent of a bad figure skater. No wonder this punk is one of the most hated players in the NHL.

By the way, Max says that when he's not playing hockey or at the rink - he just likes to hang out with his friends.

Sergio Busquets - midfielder for Barcelona FC. In case you were wondering, Sergio is the idiot who looks like he is getting shot when the defender hasn't touched him.

Sergio was in fine form today against Mourinho's Inter Milan in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final at the Camp Nou in Barcelona. Sensing that his team needed a spark to overcome a 3-1 deficit from the opening game - Busquets fell to the ground grabbing his face like he had been elbowed. The replay showed that Inter's Thiago Motta reached back and touched his face while trying to shield Busquets from the ball. The last two images of Busquets were 1) him sucking on a water bottle like it was his mom's teet, while Motta was being sent off; and 2) Busquets screaming in pain and grabbing his neck after Motta grabbed him before leaving the field.

To all you Barca fans - you have someone to be proud of in this guy.

Well...that's it for this week. No need to mention Ben Roethlisberger - he is such a mess, he can only hope to ascend to the level of chump.

Another battle of Ontario last night - Leafs win 2-1, SenaTards again are hiding behind excuse that a bunch of their guys had the flu. Funny, going into the game - their was no way the Leafs and their "AHL Roster" could beat the Tards.

The win was secondary - SenaTards resident punk Chris Neil was at his predatory best again last night. In what has become all too familiar with this guy - another predatory head shot on a guy who didn't see him coming.

You may be asking yourself - why is a member of Leaf Nation posting a picture of Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli? Well, I guess congratulations are in order for Mr. Chiarelli - if you want to know, just ask him. Before Thursday night's game between the Leafs and Bruins - Chiarelli was on Toronto radio talking about the Bruins - and of course, his favourite topic these days, the Bruins trade with Toronto that saw Phil Kessel move north for two first round draft picks (2010 and 2011) and a second round pick (2010).

Chiarelli took a bit of a shot at Brian Burke and Leaf Nation saying- "we calculated that the trade would give us at least a top 10 pick" and something to the effect that anything better would be gravy. Some (read Bruins fans) may think there was nothing wrong with what their GM said - however, it was a classless act sharing with the media that you thought another team would be horrible going into the season. As an aside - how do you "calculate" how a team is going to finish?

When Brian Burke is asked about the trade - he says he would do it again and hopes it works out for the Bruins. Whether he means it or not is not the point - Burke, unlike the former SenaTard, would never through a colleague under the bus or mock his team.

Laugh it up Pete - you too Bruins fans...remember, this is a guy who spent years as part of the SenaTards brain trust...their history of drafting hasn't been great. You will probably get a lottery pick - enjoy. Some of us aren't as gracious as our GM - we hope you draft the next Alexandre Daigle. You may draft Taylor Hall and he may be great - but playing for the Bruins...two words - Joe Thornton.

The question Leaf Nation has for Chiarelli - while you were busy "calculating" where we would finish - should you not have been "calculating" your own damn salary cap? You are the proud owner of the worst contract in the NHL - the one immovable contract - Tim Thomas. The Bruins will be in salary cap hell for a few years - enjoy a few more years of Tim Thomas and his $5 million/year contract. Or maybe

Michael Ryder - $4 million in 2010/11

Dennis Wideman - $3.9 + through 2011/12

David Krejci - $3.750 through 2011/12

Spring is in the air

Yours truly, and all of Leaf Nation (which we still count Hazel as a member in good standing), can't wait for baseball season to start - the 2009/2010 season hasn't been good to the Nation...but we still believe in Brian Burke. While many will be complaining that Burke didn't trade Leafs D Tomas Kaberle - some of us think he was right to hold on to him. A quiet trade deadline day for the Leafs - 43 years and counting.

So to those of us who say GO DODGERS...or Blue Jays (ugh - it is going to be a long summer for peeps in Toronto)...I leave you with this, as a sign that spring is in the air.

So now every Masshole and his/her retarded cousin (aka Red Sox Nation) is reveling in the news that Manny Ramirez of the LOS ANGELES DODGERS was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance. Their reasoning is that IT DIDN'T HAPPEN WHILE HE WAS IN BOSTON. Let out your collective "WHEW" guys...Red Sox remain the only untainted team in baseball. I'll let you consider that logic.

No judgments here - though I've been accused of being a "Manny-holic". More later though...it is time to get back to regular posting.

Salming was as talented and tough as anyone in the NHL - a favourite of Leaf Nation.

Today is the day Leaf Nation (still including Hazel in the fold) has been waiting for since Brian Burke came to town.

A lot of speculation on who Burke will trade today, with Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore being the more likely to go. Burke has gone on record saying that he won't have a fire sale, that he'll do what's right for the Leafs - this is a departure from previous GM John Ferguson Jr. who would lose his mind on deadline day.

If Burke does nothing else today - he'll trade Dominic Moore. In years gone by, JFJ would have signed this guy to an extension at an outrageous number (like the $3M/yr Moore is said to be asking for) and killed the cap number.

While Burke has downplayed how busy he'll be today - you have to think he's cooking up a major deal. Sure, most of the nation would love to see Burke work his magic and find a taker for LW Jason Blake - hey, if he was able to trade Sergei Federov's $6.5M/yr contract, he can trade anyone - you have to wonder if the "multi-player deal" he is considering will involve Tomas Kaberle.

IF Kaberle gets moved, I'm thinking it is part of a package to get Jay Bouwmeester or to Pittsburgh in a deal where Jordan Staal comes back to Toronto. We'll see.

What a way to ring in the new year - wild card weekend and Hazel Mae hits the national stage with MLB TV.

Today's picks - total for the year stands at + $1,000.

Atlanta +1 over ARIZONA - look for the Falcons to control the clock today and their defense to limit big plays from Arizona's one dimensional offense. The Cardinals are counterfeit, yes they were good at home (including beating my Cowboys), but they are an average team that won a brutal division. Lay $100 on the Falcons.

Indianapolis -1 over SAN DIEGO - not trusting the Chargers...at all. The Colts are probably the best team in the NFL right now, and they'll get over on the Chargers in a big way today. Lay $200 on the Colts.

Two simple words that are on the lips of almost every member of Leaf Nation - be it heartfelt or full of sarcasm, everyone is saying Thanks Mats after news broke that the Leafs former Captain had agreed to a one year deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

Many in the media have been critical of Sundin's decision to join an NHL 30+ games into the season, when his reason for refusing to be traded last year was because he didn't want to be a "rental player". Sundin has been accused of many things in his career - selfish was never one of them. To call a guy that gave his heart to an organization "selfish" because he didn't want to give up on his team and bail on them is inexcusable.

Thank you Mats, good luck in Vancouver and we'll see you back in Leaf Nation next summer.

Leaf Nation's Christmas Wish List

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Well, the Maple Leafs keep chugging along towards Christmas with the knowledge that President and General Manager Brian Burke (does that not sound wonderful?) will not make any roster moves until after the holidays. The Leafs have suffered some potentially devastating injuries - with Luke Schenn and Niklas Hagman being the most significant - but it has definitely given Burke some options for January.

While it is too early to start celebrating a couple of unheralded call-ups, Jeremy Williams and Jamie Sifers, it is a sign that perhaps, we have more down on the farm than we have lead to believe by hockey experts.

Jeremy Williams isn't flashy, he isn't projected as a top-line, or top-six forward - he just finds a way to score, plain and simple. He has found a way to score at every level and deserves a real shot to show he can do it in the show. Jamie Sifers has shown himself to be a steady, if not solid, stay-at-home defenceman who won't make any catastrophic mistakes that will result in the red light going off in your own end. Like John Mitchell before them, these guys have some upside, and with expectations for this year's team relatively low - though we (and Hazel) hope for the best - it would seem like giving unheralded guys a chance to show they can contribute.

Burke is likely looking at his options come January - he has some assets that he can move to speed up the rebuilding, both in terms of acquiring prospects/draft picks and lowering the cap hit as we move forward. Burke, Nonis and Associates will undoubtedly do the right thing. Who would Leaf Nation like to see moved? hmmm

1) Jason Blake - perhaps the worst contract John Ferguson Jr. signed (after Bryan McCabe). Here's hoping Burke can pull the Easter Bunny out of his hat at the trade deadline and get this guy off the books - come March and April, Blake may be a fit with teams like Washington, Pittsburgh, or maybe even the Blackhawks, who may be looking for a speedy veteran heading into the playoffs. Dare to dream.

2) Pavel Kubina - he is a respected and admired leader in the locker room, but that hasn't transcended on the ice. It could be the lack of options he has when moving the puck out of his own end, but he just can't seem to get it done. Kubina has looked a half step slow this year and looks like he is often out of position. Mike Van Ryn has proven to be much better than expected, and at $2M less per season than Kubina, can step in and fill those minutes. As mentioned earlier, Jamie Sifers looks like he can take care of his own end, so moving him up to a number 5/6 guy wouldn't hurt.

3) Alexei Ponikarovsky - if/when/once he gets moved, Leaf Nation knows this guy is going to blossom like former Leafs LW Fredrik Modin did when he was moved to the Lightning a number of years back. But the truth of the matter is that he hasn't fulfilled his potential in Hazel's hometown - the return for Poni isn't likely to be a bonanza (maybe a late 2nd round pick - for a playoff bound team looking for depth), but moving the $2M+ off the books will help. Jeremy Williams could provide what Poni does for much less $.

4) Curtis Joseph - the experienced backup experiment has been an abysmal failure this year. Cujo, a former fan favourite, has looked over matched this year and doesn't give the team any hope of winning. While factions of Leaf Nation who want to see the team tank this year are calling for Joseph to play more - it is time to thank him for his service and call up Justin Pogge to see if he has a future in the NHL.

Weeks back, I asked Tomas Kaberle to consider the possibility of waving his no-trade clause - the return for him would be huge - but being one of the more sentimental members of the Nation, I'd like to see him stick. Kaberle's contract is more than reasonable, at $4M+ and his puck moving ability is excellent. Ron Wilson should get off this guy's back and play him with someone who will (and can) take care of the back end while Kaberle picks his spots to join the rush.

There you have it - Leaf Nation's wish list. Speaking of which, much has been made about where Mats Sundin will play this year - the Leafs aren't an option. While the media was quick to jump all over Brian Burke's statement that "the Leafs didn't fit Mats' profile" - the conveniently left out Burke's last word on that statement - he said YET. I was going to post this when Burke got hired, but here it is - Mats will not sign with Toronto this year, but those who think his days in the Blue and White are done, are nuts. Burke is going to move some veterans this year - no doubt - and clear some cap room to allow him to make a couple of free agent acquisitions, likely from his old team, and resign Sundin to a reasonable two year deal to try and give the Leafs two legit scoring lines...you read it here first, Sundin signs with Toronto for the 2009/10 season.

In the realm of odd/funny/stupid news - New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman has once again proven he isn't the brightest star in the sky. After signing CC Sabathia to a monster deal, Cashman threw EIGHT MILLION PLUS DOLLARS at "the Enigma" AJ Burnett. The Yankees are going to regret signing this guy - $16M+ for a .500 pitcher. It is to laugh.

SATURDAY THREE PLAY
Going back to NHL picks - after last week's football picks, the total for the year stands at + $950 - it goes up today.

Minnesota over Los Angeles - the Wild have some injury issues, but they'll be able to frustrate the Kings and score on the counter. Lay $100 on Minnesota - $125.

Columbus over NY Islanders - the Jackets had been playing well at home before going out west and getting smoked - home cooking is what they need to beat the Islanders. Lay $100 on Columbus - $200.

Leafs loading up for future

While many in the media and in Leaf Nation predicted that new President and GM Brian Burke would introduce himself to Toronto with a flurry of trades to rid the Maple Leafs of "soft" Europeans, Burke has surprised the Nation by sitting back and evaluating the team first.

Burke, no doubt with an eye on the future, has been loading up...the front office. The Maple Leafs announced the Burke's best friend, Dave Nonis, has joined the front office as Senior VP of Hockey Operations. Burke's team is up to five, with Cliff Fletcher staying on in an advisory role and Joe Nieuwendyk, Al Coates and Jeff Jackson remaining with the organization - while we would never assume that Burke was copying anyone, it sure looks like he is looking at the Red Wings management team as he moves forward in rebuilding Hazel's beloved Leafs

The future looks bright - even if the present kind of sucks.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY

Leaf Nation giving thanks this weekend

Well, the news Leaf Nation has been waiting for since the end of the 2007/08 season was made official yesterday - as native New Englander, Brian Burke was named the President and General Manager of our (that you, me and Hazel) Toronto Maple Leafs.

Not since Cliff Fletcher's initial appointment to the post has the future of the Leafs looked brighter. Burke said all of the things that resonate with Leaf Nation - vowing to transform the Leafs into a big, tougher and meaner team. For those that know the history of the Blue and White - those were the founding principles of the Leafs when the legandary Conn Smythe first founded the team.

Burke's initial presser put to bed speculation (on the part of the media, of course) that he would purge the Leafs of their European content in favour of a more North American roster. While the betting is that Burke will improve the North American/European ratio on the team - we can safely assume that some of Toronto's better prospects won't be traded for the sake of improving the ratio.

Yes indeed - the future has just gotten a lot brighter for Leaf Nation. A very Happy Thanksgiving after all.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY
Three picks for the 4:00 pm slate of games. The total for the year is still a respectable + $900, so we'll up the total today.

Emerging from the mushroom cloud

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special “Hey” goes out to Hazel Mae.

Well, I’m getting over what has to be considered one of the worst weeks in the history of sports fans – everything that could possibly go wrong, did…in spades.

The Dodgers get bounced from the NLDS, thanks in large part to the contributions of a couple of fat slobs – one, an alleged wife beater (Brett Myers), the other, a Blue Jays castoff that should be playing senior men’s softball (Matt Stairs). Still can’t see how those jokers won.

Cowboys lose twice in eight days, one to the consistently inconsistent Arizona Cardinals and another to the previously thought to be awful St. Louis Rams.

The Maple Leafs find new ways to multiple goal leads – put Ryan Hollweg on the ice to pick up a momentum changing five minute major. Leaf Nation can accept that this team is going to struggle against any team that is average (or better). We accept that we are going to lose a lot of games – but to blow a three-goal lead to a team like the St. Louis Blues on Thanksgiving Monday…unacceptable and disheartening doesn’t begin to describe things.

Portugal, welcoming back Captain Cristiano Ronaldo, is held to a goalless draw by freaking Albania – IN PORTUGAL of all places. Their World Cup qualifying campaign has started with a win and a draw on the road, coupled with a total collapse resulting in an unjust loss and a tie at home. South Africa in 2010 is in doubt right now.

JUST WONDERING…
So the dream of a “Manny returns to Boston” World Series is dead – with fans of both respective team (and supposedly, network execs at Fox) are disappointed, but I can’t understand anyone who counts themselves as a fan of Major League Baseball saying that they won’t watch the World Series. It sucks that our teams didn’t make it, but you have to give the Rays credit for an unbelievable season. They are THE story of the 2009 season – it is close to impossible not to root for these guys – they play the game the right way. I’ll be watching, in hopes that the Rays will crush those fat slobs in red.

Speaking of the Rays – how are fans of the Toronto Blue Jays feeling right now? The Rays have risen from the ashes to be odds on favourites to beat the Phillies to win the World Series. J.P. Ricciardi was brought in years ago to dismantle the Jays, build up the farm system and make the Jays competitive, working with a modest payroll. His only accomplishment was dismantling the team – his original five year plan is going into its eighth year and Jays look like they will be battling with the Orioles to avoid last place… all this with a payroll in excess of $100 million. For all this – he gets an extension. Wonder if John Ferguson Jr. wishes that Ted Rogers owned the Maple Leafs.

NFL Commish Roger Goddell is very careful to protect the image of the league and its employees – the suits frown upon drug and alcohol consumption; so much so that a player can be suspended for violating league policy if he chooses to consume or over-indulge (see Pacman Jones’ latest suspension). I get that – sorta. But it is interesting to see the league’s silence on reports that Brett Favre contacted the Detroit Lions to discuss strategy against his former employers – the Green Bay Packers. Everyone is in denial mode about what was or wasn’t said between Favre and the Lions – but surely, that kind of contact calls into question the integrity of the game. If something like that happened with one of the league’s notorious big mouths – the Commish would have been all over that. But hey, it is John Madden’s favourite player – everybody’s favourite good ol’ boy, so we’ll just let it slide. Favre is a jackass.

Things must be slow in the NHL, when the big story is about how the NHL’s Governors have discussed the idea of putting a second franchise in “Southern Ontario” (read Toronto). This of course has provided fodder for some of Toronto’s noted curmudgeons to speculate how Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment would block any team infringing on their territory – the rudimentary argument being made is that MLSE is afraid of any competition, in a market that is supposedly begging for another team. So it’s up to the Maple Leafs (and ostensibly the city of Toronto) to save the NHL from itself? Why should Toronto bail out some of these jokers that put franchises in non-hockey markets? What the NHL needs is a combination of contraction and relocation – starting with re-establishing teams in cities like Winnipeg and Quebec City. But when you talk about NHL Governors, the sensible option is rarely (if ever) considered.

THINGS I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SAY
Congratulations to Eric Hinske on a World Series ring.

Damien Cox actually makes a good point when he says the Leafs should release Ryan Hollweg.

Jerry Jones, please call Daunte Culpepper – after watching Brad Johnson against the Rams, I’d rather have Culpepper filling in for Tony Romo. Tilt is laughing at me as posts this.

Tomas Kaberle, please reconsider waving your no-trade clause – Leaf Nation would hate to lose you, but re-opening trade discussions with the Flyers starting with Jeff Carter and a 1st round pick would really accelerate the rebuild.

I agree with TSN’s Bob McKenzie’s opinion keeping rookie D Luke Schenn on the Leafs roster for 40 games would be the best for his development. The consensus seems to be that the Leafs would be making a huge mistake by keeping him with the big club and starting his entry-level contract. McKenzie rightly argues that the goal is to develop the youngster while protecting the period before he is eligible for unrestricted free agency.

FINALLY
Thank you Manny Ramirez – thank you for making Dodgers baseball somewhat relevant this year – whatever happens with free agency, no hard feelings…just best wishes.

Tampa Bay over Philadelphia – Cole Hamels has been great for the Phillies, but he’ll be facing a pretty potent Rays offence tonight – his career numbers against them are ugly. Go with Scott Kazmir to neutralize Ryan Howard and Chase Utley tonight. Lay $100 on the Rays - $105.

Florida over the SenaTards – upset special. Call it a hunch, call it seeing the Tards for what they really are – overvalued. This should be a low scoring game tonight – which means it could come down to who makes a mistake. Tards G Martin Gerber is good for at least one big gaff per game. Lay $100 on Florida + $160.

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "MLB Playoffs Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Perhaps a little premature - but yesterday was a day of celebration after the Dodgers' 10-3 shellacking of the Cubs. They pretty much handed the game to Big Blue with a couple of errors in the 2nd inning - but the Dodgers still had to capitalize and execute. The series could be over tonight.

THURSDAY'S THREE STARS
Chad Billingsley was dominant - giving up one earned run over 6.2 innings, limiting the Cubs to 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out seven.

Canada's own Russell Martin broke things open with a two-out three-run double in the 2nd inning. The kid is a champ!

Shortstop Rafael Furcal had three hits, including a game changing (and GUTSY) bases loaded, rbi bunt single just before Martin's hit.

Oh yeah, Sox P Jon Lester and "Manny's Replacement" Jason Bay are to be commended for their performances in Anaheim against the Angels - see you in a few weeks guys!

Chi-town - Meet Manny!

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Well, late again with predictions for the MLB playoffs - but I went on record telling the gang at yahoo that the Dodgers would win the series against the Cubs in four games, and Big Blue is off to a great start with a 7-2 win over the Cubs.

"The Dodgers were 0-3 at Wrigley this season - but that was before Manny."

That sentence was uttered over and over during the first few innings of the game - how true, "before Manny". "Before Manny" the Dodgers were fourth from the bottom in terms of runs scored in the National League - "Since Manny" they were fourth in the league. Theo Epstein should be given a World Series ring when the Dodgers win the big one this year - the 20th anniversary of their last World Series win over Oakland.

Remember this Eck?

Come on Red Sox - we want YOU in the World Series...yeah, you read that right!

Other picks

Angels over Red Sox in five - sorry Red Sox Nation, as great as it would be to play the Sox, don't see it happening this year.

Phillies over Brewers in four - Brewers are just happy to be in the playoffs, enjoy your week guys.

White Sox over Rays in four - Rays had a dream season, just don't see it lasting too long this year.

WEDNESDAY'S THREE STARS

Derek Lowe pitched like a bulldog and kept Big Blue in the game until the bats got going.

Lowe gave up 2 earned runs (on a wind aided home run to Mark DeRosa) on seven hits and a walk, while striking out 6 (a few of them in big situtations).

He looked like the Derek Lowe of the 2004 World Series.

Manny Ramirez was his usual self. Two hits, including a solo HR, and a walk.

Ramirez drew a two out walk in the fifth, after starting out 0-2 to Ryan Dempster, to set the table for James Loney's heroics (Andre Either walked after Ramirez).

This guy has made the Dodgers LEGIT!

James Loney had one hit - one VERY big hit after starting out 0-2...Manny's influence on the Dodgers runs deep.

Loney hits a Grand Slam in the fifth to put the Dodgers up 4-2.

They didn't look back!

Happy times here - even with the Leafs getting smoked by St. Louis in preseason Hockey.

Week 4 NFL Picks

Back to regular blogging this week with the MLB playoffs set to begin - the Los Angeles Dodgers, lead by former Sox LF (love saying "former") Manuel Ramirez leading big blue - playoff opponent hasn't been decided yet, but we'll "git 'er done".

NFL Pools Picks - weighted pool, spreads were locked down on Wednesday, so they may be a bit different. This week, NO EXPERT ANALYSIS - I'm going with my gut and not listening or reading what the so called experts have to say. This has been the season of upsets, so I'm going with that trend in this week's selections. It is going to be a good week.

16) TENNESSEE -2.5 over Minnesota - having trouble seeing the Vikings scoring a TD this week against that tough Titans D. Kerry Collins does enough to win this one.

15) CAROLINA -7.5 over Atlanta - the extra half point shouldn't concern anyone, the Falcons were humbled in their first road game after a home win - the same will happen this week. Panthers are the suicide pick for the week.

14) CINCINNATI -3.5 over Cleveland - the Bengals look like they are starting to play up to their capabilities, even though they lost in OT to the Giants - Palmer is starting for the Maeple Leafs, so count on a big game against a Browns D that has been getting torched.

13) NEW ORLEANS -6.5 over San Fran - Can't see the 49ers staying close here, even with injuries on Saints D; expect Brees and Bush to have a big big BIG day against a 49ers D that is overrated and suspect at best.

12) JACKSONVILLE -7.5 over Houston - Jags running game looks like it is back to where it was last year, despite injuries on OL - Matt Schaub throwing too many picks and Jags should get a couple today.

11) DALLAS -11.5 over Washington - Owens had a quiet game last week, expect him to have a huge game today - especially with Taylor out of the lineup for the Skins; Romo should have time to find T.O. today.

10) Baltimore +6.5 over PITTSBURGH - will Roethlisberger last the game today? Ravens D should keep this a field goal game today.

09) TAMPA BAY -0.5 over Green Bay - not trusting Griese, but Aaron Rodgers showed last week that good D's are going to pose some challenges for him - Tampa's D is more than just "good" - Bucs roll today.

08) Philadelphia - 3.5 over CHICAGO - are the Bears going to score any points against the Eagles? 16 points should be more than enough to cover today and the Eagles will get there.

07) Arizona +2.5 over NY JETS - the Jets still aren't very good, despite Favre being there; Cards should be able to score a few points and squeak out an outright win.

06) ST. LOUIS +8.5 over Buffalo - too many points to give up on the road - the Bills JUST got by Oakland last week; thinking the Rams will respond to benching of Bulger and play with some pride.

05) OAKLAND +7.5 over San Diego - hunch pick, thinking Raiders D can keep this one close, despite Chargers high-powered offense.

04) KANSAS CITY +9.5 over Denver - trap game; Broncos are being overvalued because of offensive numbers, but I think Hazel could throw for 300 or rush for 100+ against Broncos D. Damon Huard and Larry Johnson to enough to keep this one under a TD today.

That's it - I'm liking them.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY
The selections have pretty much split over the first three weeks of the season - so the total is minimal. Three 1:00 pm winners with a couple more to follow before 4:00 pm

CAROLINA -7.0 over Atlanta - take this one to the house. Lay $200 on the Panthers...the pick of the day.

NEW ORLEANS -4.0 over San Francisco - see above. Lay $100 on the Saints and say thanks.

TENNESSEE -3.0 over Minnesota - see above. Lay $100 on the Titans to go 4-0.

Week 3 picks - better late than never, I've got a great feeling about this week's picks - spreads were locked down on Wednesday, so they may not reflect latest lines.

16) NEW ENGLAND - 12.5 over Miami - this is more about how bad the Dolphins are, than how good the Patriots are.

15) ATLANTA - 4.5 over Kansas City - see above, Chiefs make another QB change. Michael Turner should have the same kind of day McFadden had last week against the Chiefs.

14) PHILADELPHIA -2.5 over Pittsburgh - they're both counterfeit in my books, but the Steelers have too many issues on O-Line to deal with the Eagles pass rush...it is going to be a long day for Ben.

13) Jacksonville +5.5 over INDIANAPOLIS - the Jags always play the Colts tough, with Sanders out for Indy, it will likely be a great day for Jags running game. Take the points and run.

12) DENVER -5.5 over New Orleans - Saints have injury issues on D, not good when you are facing a Broncos offense that is rolling.

11) BUFFALO -8.5 over Oakland - Bills D should rule the day today against a Raiders offense without Fargas and McFadden only expected to get limited playing time. Bills win by 13 today.

10) Carolina +3.5 over MINNESOTA - so the Vikings bench Jackson in favour of Gus Frerotte, will it make a big difference? NO. Panthers could win this one outright.

09) SEATTLE -9.5 over St. Louis - Seahawks D will have to step up eventually...might as well be today against a Rams O-Line that could stop Hazel on the rush, let alone Patrick Kearney.

08) Arizona +3.5 over WASHINGTON - Cards have enough offense to win this one outright.

07) Dallas -2.5 over GREEN BAY - This is Cowboys country. Packers have had a couple of cream puffs to start the season off - it will be different tonight.

06) CHICAGO -2.5 over Tampa Bay - not trusting Brian Griese, especially with Galloway out of today's game.

05) Detroit +3.5 over SAN FRAN - started out thinking the Lions suck "NOW", but history says, this is exactly when they surprise everyone and win. 49ers have injury issues on D, so Kitna will probably look like an All-Star today.

04) TENNESSEE -4.5 over Houston - ya the Texans are well rested, but can they get anything done against the Titans D?

03) New York Jets +9.5 over San Diego - Chargers D can't stop anyone right now, Favre keeps it close - backdoor cover.

NFL Week 2 Picks

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

I have finally recovered from Portugal's loss to freaking Denmark on Wednesday - unbelievable - I can't talk about it without throwing up in my mouth a little. We always seem to want to do things the hard way - oh well, at least Ronaldo will be back for the next round of qualifiers.

This week's NFL picks - confidence pool, with no negative points attached. Last week was brutal, but it is in the past and this week is certain to be better. Remember, spreads were locked down on Wednesday in the pool, so the line may have changed - the suggested three play will reflect up to date lines.

16) Indianapolis -1.5 over MINNESOTA - before last week, if you had to guess which of these two teams would start the season 0-2 - who would you have chosen? Thought so...the Colts straighten things out this week; Manning over Adrian Peterson.

15) New England +2.5 over NY JETS - ok, Matt Cassell is no Tom Brady, but last time I checked, the Jets weren't a very good football team. Patriots ride emotion - with something to prove in Brady's absence.

14) CAROLINA -3.5 over Chicago - Forte won't run for 150+ against the Panthers (ask LaDainian Tomlinson), meaning Kyle Orton will have to step up to win the game. The Panthers weren't very good against the Chargers and still won - the Bears should be a cake walk compared to the Chargers.

13) ARIZONA -6.5 over Miami - the Dolphins were "ok" in their first game against the Jets, but they were at home. Cardinals take advantage of a young Dolphins secondary and win big.

12) SEATTLE -8.5 over San Fran - the Seahawks got whooped in Buffalo last week, but they have a history of pounding the league's bottom-feeders like the 49ers.

11) Pittsburgh -5.5 over CLEVELAND - the Browns showed last week that they aren't ready to play with the league's big boys - the Steelers will beat them up much like Dallas did.

10) New Orleans +0.5 over WASHINGTON - Brees vs Campbell...enough said.

09) Green Bay -2.5 over DETROIT - Right "NOW", Detroit sucks - read post from earlier this week - and Green Bay doesn't. Packers win by a TD.

08) NY Giants -8.5 over ST. LOUIS - the Rams looked awful against the Eagles pressure D, it won't get any easier this week against the Giants.

07) DALLAS -6.5 over Philadelphia - no explanation need...this is Cowboys' country.

06) Atlanta -8.5 over TAMPA BAY - Brian Griese gets the start for Garcia - ugh. Bucs win the game, but Atlanta keeps it close by trying to control clock with running game. Think back-door cover.

05) CINCINNATI -1.5 over Tennessee - Carson Palmer starts for the Maeple Leafs in Fantasy Football pool...his last chance, so he'll be motivated.

04) DENVER +2.5 over San Diego - grudge pick, hatin' the Chargers these days.

Looking back on Week 1 of the NFL

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Tuesday entries used to be a round up of the Champs & Chumps from the week that was in professional sports - what better way to get back to that format than to take a look back at week one of the NFL. An honourary "Hazie Award" will still be given out to those deserving of the title of "Hazel's Heroes", while those who didn't make the grade will have the title of "Hazel's Zeros" thrust upon them.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE CHAMPS

Who would have thought?
Atlanta Falcons big free agent signing, RB Michael Turner, shredded the Detroit Lions for 220 yards and 2 TD on 22 carries. Turner was often referred to as one of the NFL's best back up running backs when he was in San Diego, but he had his share of doubters when he signed with the Falcons - he answered his critics on Sunday, at least for one week. I wonder if Ron Mexico was watching.

Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler is another guy who came into the season with doubters, (some doubted him, others doubted the Broncos) especially with Brandon Marshall being suspended, but Cutler destroyed a Raiders D that was predicted to be above average this year - completing 16 of 24 passes for 299 yards and 2 TDs. Not saying he is the next Tom Brady, but he sure is looking like a major upgrade on Jake Plummer.

When New England QB Tom Brady went down, you could hear the groan of Patriots fans clear across the continent, especially considering Matt Cassell was coming in to relieve. Cassell, who was coming off an abysmal pre-season, stepped in and did a workman like job, completing 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards, 1 TD, and most importantly - NO interceptions. While some of the die-hards are grasping at straws, remembering a time when Brady came on to take over for an injured Drew Bledsoe, most have resigned themselves to tough times ahead - for this week though, Cassell gets a nod of approval (thinking Hazel might have given him the thumbs up on Sunday - even though it was against the Chiefs...she can't still be a Chiefs fan).

Ya, we expected that
Dallas Cowboys RB Marion Barber picked up where he left off last year - 80 yards on 16 carries with 2 TDs, and he destroyed a couple of Browns defenders. The Cowboys jettisoned the ever disappointing Julius Jones because they knew Barber was the real deal.

That Chunky Soup lovin' mamas boy Donovan McNabb has Eagles fans dreaming of great things this season after torching the St. Louis Rams for 3 TDs - 21/33 for 361 yards. Hey, McNabb gets some recognition THIS WEEK, but we all know he's a champ against the lightweights of the league and a chump against the league's heavyweights - please, don't throw "Mr. Jessica Simpson" in my face...this is the year of the Cowboys!

The New Orleans Saints came into the season with high expectations of rebounding from a disappointing 2007 season - Drew Brees led the way with 3 TD passes, completing 23 of 32 passes for 323 yards. It is going to be a long season for defensive units in the NFC South - just ask Chuckie's boys in Tampa.

HAZEL'S ZEROES - THE CHUMPS

Who would have thought?
Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer had a day to forget in Baltimore on Sunday - with targets like TJ Houshmanzadeh and Chad Ocho Cinco, you would expect him to put up better numbers than 10/25 for 99 yards and 1 INT. Carson might just walking the sidelines on the Maeple Leafs Fantasy Football team this week.

San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson was held under 100 yards and was kept out of the end zone by a Panthers rush D that hasn't scared anyone in a few years. On the day, LT rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries...did I mention NO TDs????

Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning walked away on Sunday night with somewhat respectable numbers - 30/49 for 257 yards and 1 TD pass - but to be held to 13 points on opening night, AT HOME, against a Chicago D that wasn't all that last year is embarrassing. Too many commercials Peyton...

Ya, we expected that - YOU SUCK
The Detroit Lions came into this season telling anyone who would listen that they would be better than last year - their slogan for the 2008 season is "NOW", as in "all that matters is right now". Well after an opening game loss to the Atlanta Falcons, it is safe to say that "RIGHT NOW YOU SUCK DETROIT". But is anyone surprised?

The Washington Redskins unveiled their new West Coast offense under new head coach Jim Zorn (one of the all-time favourites around here), well against an under-manned Giants D, the new look Redskins were the same old pathetic Skins - 209 yards of offense and 7 points to show for 60 minutes of football.

The San Diego Chargers found another way to lose on Sunday, against a Panthers team they should have smoked. The Chargers cost many a person, yours truly included, their 2007 suicide pool when they blew a lead against the Kansas City Chiefs - they did it again this year against Carolina. They gave up ONE offensive TD (with two seconds left in the game) and managed to lose...they didn't to it to me this year, but I'm sure they got a bunch. What a bunch of donks they are.

That's it for tonight gang - more tomorrow. World Cup Qualifiers with Portugal hosting Denmark - the good guys got off on the right foot with a 4-0 win in Malta on Saturday. Carlos Queiroz FINALLY told Ricardo to stay home - a new era in football, one where MAYBE our goalkeeper comes out to challenge a ball in the air. We can only hope - no Ronaldo tomorrow, so its up to Deco, Nani, Simao and Hugo Almeida to carry the load.

I Still "Heart" You Man

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

It didn't take but a few hours for the Toronto media, lead by that stinkin' curmudgeon Damien Cox, and a rather vocal faction of Leaf Nation to criticize the Silver Fox for doing exactly what he was criticized for not doing at the trade deadline - get it?

Cliff Fletcher was ridiculed for not being able to persuade any of the "Muskoka Five" (boy, that Cox is one witty guy huh?) - Sundin, Kubina, Tucker, Kaberle and Bryan McCabe - to accept a trade that would give the Leafs some much needed cap room and perhaps bring back some youth to start the rebuild. Fletcher was all but labeled a failure by Cox and his counterparts in Toronto - the prevailing "wisdom" was that the game had passed him by.

Fast forward a couple of months - Fletcher got rid of Tucker and Raycroft AND fulfilled what most of the nation felt was his mandate, trading Bryan McCabe and his $5.75 million cap hit. The pressure from the media was subtle, but tangible - Cox and company were no doubt snickering about how moving McCabe would be next to impossible and the Leafs surely wouldn't get anything of value if they did.

Well, Fletcher not only got rid of McCabe (and a fourth round pick in 2010), but he brought back a 29 year old defenceman in Mike Van Ryn - a former first round pick of the Devils - with much more upside than McCabe and cleared almost $3M in cap room.

This just wouldn't do for Cox - he had to find something wrong with the deal (he always finds something wrong). Cox first criticized Fletcher for giving up a pick when he should be stockpiling them AND today tries to justify his criticism of Fletcher by comparing the McCabe trade for what Tampa received when they traded Dan Boyle to San Jose.

I won't get into how much of a donkey Damien Cox is - but this comparison is beyond asinine. Cox knows full well that Fletcher was not dealing from a position of strength in this matter - he was one of the people that felt McCabe's contract couldn't be moved - he SHOULD also know that Dan Boyle, while a bit of a defensive liability, has MUCH more offensive upside than McCabe. Boyle is a puck mover and a great skater - Bryan McCabe is not.

Cox also offers his opinion on Van Ryn, all but dismissing him in this deal. Cox didn't bother to stop for a second and consider that Joe Nieuwendyk might just have had some input on the deal since he played with Van Ryn in Florida. Cox writes editorials and opinions - as such, he rarely if ever has a source or a quote from anyone connected to the Leafs - but you would think that before writing a piece, he might want to look at the bigger picture.

Cox has managed to rile up some of the more mentally challenged members of the nation (aren't there a few in every fan base) who know think that Fletcher made a bad deal and should have gotten back much more for McCabe. I'm sure when he hit "publish", he took a sip of his coffee, patted himself on the back and told himself that he was great.

For all his smugness - Damien Cox is, for all intents and purposes, a blogger just like the rest of us.

To Cliff Fletcher - I "Heart" you man...you did the right thing. Crazy...crazy like a fox!

Leaf Nation waits to hear word of Mats Sundin's intentions - with many predicting he will announce his retirement or state that he won't be coming back for opening night. We'll see.

For those of you that haven't heard or read - Hazel Mae has reportedly agreed to join MLB TV starting in January. Big congrats to our favourite sportscaster - go get 'em. Note to "Shots", because we both know you lurk here - lighten up dude...the hatin' and bitterness isn't very becoming of you. Actually, its just looking pretty pathetic now - you're media analysis doesn't mean anything to anyone other than you.

Time to start talkin' a little hockey this week - the big story is where will Mats Sundin wind up?

The Olympics wrapped up in Beijing, with American swimmer Michael Phelps and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt widely being acknowledged as the heroes of the games. Well, if you think gold medals is what makes an Olympic hero - I guess you are right.

However, let me introduce you to Angel Matos of Cuba. Matos was disqualified from the bronze medal match in Taekwondo for taking too much time after an injury.

Matos, snapped and took his frustration out on the judged with a kick to the teeth of the Swedish judge. I can't help but wonder how many athletes who say they were "robbed" in Olympic competition applauded Matos for doing what they could only dream of doing.

These Olympic games, like many before them, had a number of allegations of crooked judging and pre-determined results - so let's hear it for Angel Matos for making the officials accountable for their actions.

Back later with some thoughts on Mats Sundin who is rumoured (read - Eklund) to be signing with the New York Rangers today - not buying it; mostly because Eklund is like Nostradamus.

The word out of Toronto is that Maple Leafs D Bryan McCabe is considering accepting a trade out of Toronto - if that is indeed true and it comes to pass, I will be the first person to congratulate Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher for accomplishing what was once thought to be impossible - moving the WORST contract in the NHL - and be the first to say:

I HEART YOU MAN.

and I'm a Manny-holic.

That was the diagnosis given to me by Dr. Sparkylyle fan at the Hazelspeeps Group Treatment center on Yahoo.

The condition is not life-threatening, but could take weeks, months or even years of rehab at a treatment facility staffed by members of Red Sox Nation who know exactly what Manny Ramirez is all about. "Manny-holism" is a complex affliction, often going undiagnosed, and manifests itself in many different behavioral tendencies - I really had no idea that I had contracted or developed this affliction. Buts thanks to Dr. Sparky, I know what I am up against.

Dr. Sparky told me that most common symptom of "Manny-holism" is denial of the "facts" about Manny; a refusal to acknowledge that Manny is, in terms of baseball, as close as you can get to pure evil.

I guess in my case, it was a refusal to acknowledge information put out by men abover reproach, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost of baseball who have told the baseball world that, among other things:

from the desk (keyboard) of the Father of baseball - that Manny's legacy is tainted after tanking on the beloved Red Sox. The Father and guardian of all that is sacred in baseball says that Manny's legacy should be that he was lazy, unmotivated and disrespect THE GAME OF BASEBALL. The Father went so far as to say that one of the greatest hitters of this generation doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame anymore that Mark McGwire.

from the mouth of the Son - that Manny was an awful teammate and generally not liked in the clubhouse. The Son, who also upholds all the traditions of good baseball players- being humble and giving credit to the team that helps you win games, being a good teammate, keeping not talking to the media about internal problems - ignored all these things when he phoned up his pals on talk radio to bring to light an isolated incident in 2005...Manny is a very very bad bad man.

from the desk (keyboard) of the holy ghost - that Manny hated Boston and Red Sox Nation. There was little evidence that Manny had such outward contempt for the Nation, but the Holy Ghost of baseball exposed Manny as a fraud - the Holy Ghost watched every move Manny made and was right there to tell the Nation how his on-field actions was simply his way of expressing a deep rooted hatred for the team and the fans.

Dr. Sparky asked me to look within to find the root cause of my problem. I guess it all started years ago - when I turned on the television to watch the visiting Cleveland Indians take on the Toronto Blue Jays (they were probably Hazel Mae's Jays in those days) - but here was this kid who was laid back, played with a smile - which only left his face when he stepped into the batter's box - and could seemingly get a hit at will. He was a perfect compliment to the uber-intense Albert Joey Belle and Kenny Lofton. Manny killed the Jays in that weekend - something he would come to repeat often.

I thought I just liked him as a player - I guess it got really bad in 2004. I along with every other baseball fan (outside of St. Louis and New York) got caught up in the Red Sox playoff run - one that would see them end a long World Series Championship drought. Manny and David Ortiz led charmed ("Hazel Karma" blessed????) Red Sox team to an amazing series win over New York after being down 3-0 and eventually a World Series sweep of the Cardinals - a year in which Manny won the World Series MVP after destroying St. Louis. Manny was unflappable in the box - during the playoffs nothing fazed him, he went out and did his job...he hit, he produced. I seem to remember most of Red Sox Nation celebrating "Manny being Manny" - while I never fully bought into it, it was amusing and entertaining. Over the next few years I thought I was just in line with Red Sox fans that loved this guy - Dr. Sparky has told me the medical term is "man-love for Manny".

I tried to explain to Dr. Sparky that my admiration for Manny was based on what he did when he stepped into that batter's box - the good Doctor told me that I was in a state of denial to all of the bad things that went with Manny being Manny. No hustle, no commitment, no drive, no heart, all the things that Red Sox Nation expects of their players. I was trying to understand this - not being part of the Nation and all - but it was something akin to what former Bruins coach Don Cherry wanted of his teams...hey, I'm just a dumb Canadian, I only understand hockey. I guess I was in denial because while I admire players like that, I'm not foolish enough to think that you can win championships with a team made up of heart and soul guys that fans love - ummm Jason Varitek comes to mind.

I tried to explain, in vain I might add, that despite all of the problems Manny is alleged to bring with him to the ballpark - he still produces and was a huge part in the success of the Sox. Dr. Sparky is having none of that talk either.

As a last ditch attempt to have him change his professional opinion of my affliction - I wondered aloud if Manny's rebellious streak against Sox management had anything to do with the fact that they have made no secret of the fact they wanted him gone from the team; putting him on waivers, letting everyone know they were open to trade talks involving Manny, sharing results of his MRI with the media and fans. "Nonsense, its just business...Manny's job is to play every day. The Sox are within their rights to do anything to make the team better."

The final straw in my case was when I expressed my happiness that my beloved Dodgers, or as we have seen Hazel and others refer to them as "Red Sox West" (hmmmm where have we read that before huh?), had acquired Manny from the Sox. That was when it became clear to the good doctor that I was suffering from "Manny-holism". How could I in good conscience, as a baseball fan, celebrate the fact that my team was acquiring a miserable guy like Manny...a guy who screwed God's team (the Sox) to get what he wants?

I still haven't decided to enter Dr. Sparky's rehab center- I'm considering a seeking a second opinion. Maybe from someone who knows Manny and IS playing with him right now - Dodgers catcher Russell Martin comes to mind...I might just do that. Of course, if Hazel wanted to wade in with her opinion - I'd be more than happy to hear her out.

Right now, going on what I have right now, I can only say

You Can't Go Home

It is often said that the toughest thing a professional athlete has to deal with is coming to grips with the fact that their career is winding down. The signs seem to be obvious to just about everyone – except of course the player in question. In most instances, the observers of the game (media and fans) are right – it is time for the player to call it a career, but sometimes these guys surprise everyone and put a halt to the downslide and prove to everyone they have plenty left in the tank. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it presents an interesting scenario for the players in question and the team he has been part of – sometimes, you just can’t go home.

Two of the most talked about “old-timers” in their respective sports, both thought to be in the twilight of their respective careers shocked everyone with seasons that were reminiscent of the way they performed in their prime. Of course the two players in question are (former) Toronto Maple Leafs Captain Mats Sundin and Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre. In what many speculated would be their final season in professional sports, both turned in stellar 2007/2008 seasons. The way in which they approached their off-season and the decisions they faced couldn’t be more different.

Favre, who had (threatened) talked about retiring on more than one occasion over the last few years held a press conference to announce his retirement from professional football. While some expressed surprise that Favre would quit the game after coming off a season where he led the Pack to the NFC Championship Game, many felt that after a few sub par seasons, Favre would go out on a high note. It only took a few months for Favre to change his mind and decide that maybe he did have something left in the tank, and wanted to return to the Packers – maybe his wife wanted more face time on another “Farewell Brett” tour of the NFL. The manner in which Favre let it be known that he wanted to play in 2008 put the Packers in a bad spot – he was bush league – and the way he has used to media to get back into the game has been shameful.

The Packers, very rightly, want to move forward with Aaron Rodgers – Brett Favre, for all his professed love for the organization, wants the organization to do what is best for Brett Favre, NOT the Green Bay Packers. Favre, and his backers, want to ignore his last few years and think that the 07 season is more indicative of his ability at this stage of his career – well, the 07 season except for his final pass attempt against the Giants. Favre, the good ol’ boy who just loved to play football, has proven to be a calculating, ruthless, vindictive and bitter man who wants not only to play in 08, but to play for a team that he can try to stick it to the Packers twice a season. His request to be released, followed by his threat to come to camp, followed by the list of teams he would be willing to play for show just how much contempt he has for his former employers and the fans of Green Bay. He’s hell bent on screwing their upcoming season by being a distraction.

Mats Sundin on the other hand, handled his off-season in a totally different manner. Sundin would not be bullied or pressured into making a decision – he said from the outset that he would not make any announcements on his future until well into the summer – his last statement was that he would make public his future plans on August 1^st (maybe he will hold a joint press conference with Hazel on August 1 – to announce where they will be this season, Toronto? Kidding). Sundin has acknowledged that he has received enticing offers from both Montreal and Vancouver, but hasn’t closed the door on Toronto just yet.

Sundin has been always been a classy individual – he proves that time and time again. He owes the Leafs nothing – for those who will criticize him for coming back to play for another team when he didn’t accept a trade to help the Leafs before the deadline – again, he doesn’t owe the Leafs, or us in the Nation, a damn thing. “We” are in rebuild mode and as such, Mats doesn’t fit into the grand plan of things – tough to say, but for those of us who have waited our entire life for a Stanley Cup, it is time to wish Mats well and move on without him.

When it all comes out in the wash – Sundin will come out of this with his head held high, while Favre will come out looking bad.

You can’t go home…unless you are Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal international’s off-season has garnered attention all over the world. Ronaldo has stated publicly that he would welcome a move to Real Madrid, even though he is under contract with Manchester United for four more years AND they have no intention of selling him to the Spanish giants. Ronaldo is SO high profile that his story is news in North America – were message board champs are quick to criticize and characterized him as being a greedy spoiled athlete who is only in it for the money.

A different perspective for your consideration – part my own and part from a family member who is friends with one of Ronaldo’s closest friends. The other side of the argument is, the Spanish league is much better suited to Ronaldo’s long term future in terms of health and longevity in the game (definitely not as physical as the Premiership), the quality of life Ronaldo would enjoy in Madrid is far and away better than life in Manchester, and Spanish chicks are hotter than British chicks (ok, I made that up, but its true). Ronaldo is already financially set for life with guaranteed endorsements in the tens of millions – it is definitely NOT about the money.

From my perspective, albeit based on cultural, he hasn’t forgotten about the treatment after the 2006 World Cup where fans in England wanted to lynch him for “getting Wayne Rooney thrown out of the quarter final game”. We may forgive, but we never ever ever ever forget. The threats, insults and disrespect directed at a 22 year old kid who was playing for his country is shameful – the fact that it was totally overblown and distorted to serve as an excuse is just a joke. He went back to England to boos and catcalls – many in his “home” park of Old Trafford – and played his heart out for two years.

For those who are criticizing him – remember this, he has NOT ONCE said he wouldn’t play for Manchester United, he simply said he would like to play for Real – going on to say that if the transfer didn’t happen, he would report to Manchester and give his all for the Red Devils. Remember this Manchester United fans - if you have forgotten, you can bet your bottom dollar Ronaldo hasn't.

You can’t go home…but you can stay a while longer, until the lease expires.

Boston Red Sox LF Manny Ramirez tells ESPN Desportes that he has had it with Sox management. No need to post links or recount what was said as it was all over the news. Fans and media have been quick to react and criticize Ramirez, talking about how he has become too much of a distraction to stay in Boston and that it is imperative the Sox get rid of this guy – of course, AFTER the 2008 season.

Some are already making Ramirez out to be the scapegoat if Boston misses the playoffs by one game – for him pulling himself out of the lineup before Friday’s 1-0 loss against the Yankees – one question. If Boston misses the playoffs by ONE game, one single game, with Manny in the lineup for 140+ games…just how do you think they’ll do without him in the lineup next year? Manny said enough is enough – backing Manny on this one. Sox management, while celebrated in New England, don’t seem like the most ethical people…maybe Manny has something to gripe about…something(s) you, me or the reporters aren’t privy to?

Is Red Sox Nation looking to blame Manny for the 2008 season because it would be too hard for them to look at guys like Varitek, Ortiz, Beckett and, to some extent, Papelbon, who are all having sub par season for them?

Is it possible that Manny, in venting his anger and frustration, is simply saying things that other Sox players would love to say – but can’t? Does anyone really think Manny is the only player who is unhappy with management? C’mon gang, if your best player is being jerked around by management (even if it isn’t to the extent he claims) do you think others aren’t feeling the same way? Ramirez is likely the only player who has the stones to stand up to them – of course the 10 – 5 thing helps his courage.

Maybe I missed something but doesn't Manny vent and then go out and produce? He is a professional - he doesn't let outside stuff get to him when he is on the field - shouldn't ALL professionals do that? Shouldn't his teammates block all that stuff out and follow Manny's example? Isn't that what they are PAID to do as professionals? Stop reading the columnists who are looking for something to write - they know not of what they write.

Vacation season is upon us, and aside from yours truly, I can't think of anyone who deserves a vacation as much as our girl Hazel. Hazel wrapped up her tenure last night in fine style (as she always does) with a heartfelt goodbye to NESN viewers and a pretty good montage of some of her good and not so good moments - sprinkled in with Hazel being Hazel - the clip is a great example of why people like her...she doesn't take herself too seriously and has fun with what she does. It is what we should all aspire to.

So Hazel, from your Canadian peeps - congrats to you, its time to play Spirit of the West's "Home for a Rest" and enjoy some down time before you embark on your next challenge.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (Cliff Fletcher) announced they would buy out the remainder of Darcy Tucker's contract - thus making him a free agent. Tucker will receive $6M of the remaining $9M on his contract - the cap hit to the Leafs is $1M per season over the next six year. The Leafs also announced that they had put Andrew Raycroft and Kyle Wellwood on waivers - two more of John Ferguson Jr.'s signings.

The Tucker signing, much like the Blake/Raycroft/McCabe signings, was a mistake - one the Leafs will have to live with for a while. Somewhat disappointed Tucker didn't waive his no movement clause - for a guy who is supposed to have integrity, it looks like he refused to waive his NMC to get the buyout and move on to another contract.

Note to Bryan McCabe - FORGET IT...THERE IS NO BUYOUT FOR YOU. McCabe's agent has let it be known he is not interested in waiving his no movement clause, that the Leafs would have to buy him out for him to leave. HA HA HA - Forget it. Thankfully, Cliff Fletcher made it clear that the Leafs would NOT buy McCabe out. While we'd love to get rid of McCabe and his obscene contract, we'll do it via trade...thanks very much.

Judging by Ron Wilson's early exposure to the Leafs market - McCabe isn't in his plans...here's hoping he puts the screws to McCabe until he waives his NMC and has his ass traded to the Islanders.

The Champs & Chumps

Another installment of the Champs & Chumps – a look back at the last seven days or so and highlight the notable newsmakers from the world of sports. Some have distinguished themselves with stellar performances, while others have managed to fall a little short in their pursuit of athletic excellence. We honour the Champs with a “Hazie” award and bestow the title of “Hazel’s Hero” for the week; those falling in the category of less than stellar get no award, but do have the title of “Hazel’s Zero” tagged on them. This usual disclaimer is that Hazel hasn’t approved this week’s choices, but we’d like to think she’d smile and give a “thumbs up” if she was checking in today.

THE CHAMPS
HAZEL’S HEROES

FOOTBALL
Spain’s Iker Casillas turned in an unbelievable performance in a shootout win over Italy on Sunday – preserving the hope that perhaps the most prized trophy in the beautiful game will be won by a team that plays the game the right way. Casillas made two unbelievable saves in regulation time and saved two penalties to lead the Iberians to a 1-0 win over always boring to watch Azzurri.

Russia’s Andrei Arshavin has embraced the spotlight and emerged as one of the most exciting players in the tournament. Arshavin shredded the Dutch defence and was a threat all afternoon as he led his team to a 3-1 win in extra time. He came into the tournament relatively unknown – that all changed on Saturday.

Honourable mention goes to Portugal striker Nuno Gomes – his goal in a 3-2 to Germany made it three successive European Championships in which he managed to score, the first ever Portuguese player to do so. He is by no means a world-class striker, but he finds a way to score.

HOCKEY
Often the butt of jokes around the NHL – the Toronto Maple Leafs scouting staff looks like they hit the jackpot at the NHL’s 2008 Entry Draft. The Leafs traded up to get a future shut-down defenceman in Luke Schenn and followed it up with what more than one scouting service have called “steals”. The Leafs used the 60th overall pick to select New Englander Jimmy Hayes, a kid who would have been a top 10 selection last year had he been eligible; and then followed up by using the 98th pick to select Mikhail Stevanovich, a kid scouts say has “top 10” potential if he somehow manages to combine his natural ability with intensity and consistency. Let the rebuild commence.

BASEBALL
Atlanta Braves 1b Mark Texeira hit three home runs on Sunday to lead the Braves to a win over the Mariners – for good measure, he homered from both sides of the plate. Not bad for a Portuguese kid huh?

Maeple Leafs OF Jermaine Dye was named the American League Player of the Week after posting a batting avg of .417 with 5 HR and 13 RBI – it wasn’t enough to win the week for the Leafs in the Yahoo league though.

This one is a little late, and will likely anger my man Johnny P, but the Greek National team’s appearance at Euro 2008 was not only a disaster, but also a complete and utter embarrassment. When they danced in the streets of Lisbon four years ago, they claimed a new era in Greek football was about to begin. Did it ever – the missed the 2006 World Cup, and followed it up by becoming the first defending champions to not advance past the group stage – they managed one goal in three games. They proudly stated that no one could take the championship win away from them…true; but, from now on, when referencing their win at the 2004 Championships, it will be followed up by the embarrassment of such a pathetic defence of their title.

Germany Midfielder Michael Ballack’s theatrics last Thursday were an embarrassment, to both him and his country. The Germans have long been regarded as tough, honest, physical players – but watching Ballack writhe around on the pitch, clutching his shoulder like it had been separated, was absolutely pathetic. Replays showed a Portuguese defender won the ball from Ballack and touched his shoulder (actually grazed it) before starting a rush up field – Ballack lay their clutching his shoulder like he had been shot. His recovery was miraculous – it felt so much better in the second half that he had enough strength to push a Portuguese defender in the box to get a head on the ball for a goal. Remember this Michael – your smile is going to disappear pretty fast when you get to London and Scolari is your coach…if you are anywhere near as ineffective as you were last year…expect to have plenty of time to nurse your shoulder in one of those big comfy sideline chair you piece of crap.

Italy gets a team award for making the beautiful game an ugly, boring event to watch. The Italians came into the tournament like they always do – playing a “tactical” game and seizing opportunities to score. In other words, we don’t have enough creativity to play with the talented teams – so we’ll grind the game to a halt and take our chances in penalties…the Italian Job. It was one sweet consolation to see you lose to Spain.

BASEBALL
Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi was the big newsmaker in the world of baseball last week. Ricciardi fired long time friend John Gibbons and “announced” that former Jays GM Cito Gaston was coming back to replace Gibbons (better known here as Boomhauer). You would think that Ricciardi, feeling extremely fortunate to have kept his job, would try to keep a low profile. But the Chickenhawk can’t help himself from making matters worse – out of nowhere, Ricciardi craps all over Adam Dunn of the Reds when asked if Dunn would be a good fit with the Jays. From the man that signed the likes of AJ Burnett, Frank Thomas, David Eckstein and many more – just what makes this guy think he is an evaluator of talent? This guy has got to go – he makes John Ferguson Jr. look like the second worst sports executive in Toronto.

Quick post this morning - in a weekend that did not go according to form at Euro 2008, with the underdogs all winning, Spain bucked the trend by beating Italy 1-0 in penalties. The Italians brought their normal game - defend, defend, defend and hope we sneak a goal - and by the second half of extra time, had all but packed it in in hopes of getting to penalties.

Iker Casillas broke the hearts of the Italians with TWO penalty kick saves.

Spain carries the hopes of the Iberians, and everyone else who loves the beautiful game - they play it the right way. As for the Italians, take that crap you call "tactical play" back to the boot and console yourselves with delusions of grandeur about how well you play the game - you show up at every tournament with the same crap and bore everyone to death.

For those of you who say soccer is boring - with the exception of yesterday's game - the quarter-final games were all pretty exciting. A hell of a lot more exciting than GOLF.

An Unjust Result

Germany beat Portugal yesterday by a count of 3-2.

The beautiful game can be oh so cruel - the score line will say that Germany dominated, twice with two goal leads, but Portugal were by far the better team yesterday.

Two of Germany's goals came off of free kicks, with Portugal failing to defend in the air - didn't I say the Achilles heel? - with one goal coming on a cross. Other than that, the Germans really didn't threaten that much...Portugal, was buzzing the net for most of the game.

The German messageboards are rife with praise for a dominant victory over Portugal, they have a funny way of looking at things...they were absolutely dominated by a faster, more skilled team.

No point in rehashing it all - the game is over and done with, and we look to the future. World Cup 2010 in South Africa - who knows, this page may still be up and running.

NHL Draft tonight...GO LEAFS GO.

Quarter Final Day at Euro

Portugal vs Germany

Not much to say today - the worst possible matchup for Portugal, likely the toughest test they'll face. The Germans are in gamemanship mode - injury questions and heaping praise on Portugal as being the favourites. Come to think of it, the Germans might be soccer's New England Patriots.

The Good
Portugal is in form and go into the game relatively rested. The eyes of the world on on Cristiano Ronaldo today; some of us hope for another performance like he delivered against the Czechs, others hoping he is a non-factor so that they can hate on him. Portugal have a revenge factor, looking to pay the Germans back for a 3-1 defeat in the consolation game of the 2006 World Cup. They are a confident bunch - they fear no one.

The Bad
The Germans will be physical today and they will look to dominate Portugal in the air - the Achilles heal of the team. Their style of play has historically presented Portugal with fits - they will grind the game down to a halt if they can and look to sneak one.

The Ugly
Portugal's recent history hasn't been good against Germany - there was a 3-0 win against Germany in 2000, but the architect of that win - Luis Figo - is in the stands now. It's up to Ronaldo and company to get it done today.

That damn feeling of saudade has me thinking its a crap shoot today - the nation is hopeful, but.

I've got nothing more - hopeful that the boys can get it done; a quick visit to church is likely in order today.

World Cup 2010 - Forca Portugal!

As mentioned this morning – it is D-Day on the second to last day of the group stage at the Euro 2008 Championships; surprise, surprise, controversy is the word of the day…actually the word of the day is “biscotto” (Italian cookie).

More than any other nation of fans – the Italians go into each and every tournament not only expecting to win, but believing it is their God given right, their destiny, to take home the grand prize – anything less than a championship can be explained by a conspiracy to prevent the Azzurri from winning another championship. The entire world is against them.

The Brazilians and Argentineans expect to win.

The Spaniards, Germans and French believe they can win.

The Portuguese hope they can win – that damn feeling of saudade.

The Italians though – well, they believe they are God’s team and it is their destiny to win.

The Italians go into today’s game knowing that their fate rests in the hands of the Dutch and Romanians – those directly connected to the Azzurri are in full gamesmanship mode, attempting to shame the Dutch into taking care of business for them. Without outright questioning the integrity of the Dutch, they have gone on record as stating that a loss by the Dutch today would naturally raise questions about Oranje’s desire to avoid another potential matchup with Italy in the semi-finals. The Italians are imploring the Dutch to uphold the integrity of the game and not roll over for the Romanians today – hmmm, football (soccer) – Italia – Integrity…hmmm ok.

Their supporters are already offering up excuses for a potential early exit from a tournament they have not nearly been as dominant as they would like everyone to believe. The fans talk about the biscotto – an Italian cookie – and how the Dutch and the Romanians are going to squeeze the Azzurri out…much like the sandwich-like little cookie they love having with their espresso.

They are seemingly oblivious to the fact that they came into this tournament, not necessarily as the best team (not even really top four in terms of talent), but with “favourite” tag bestowed on them by virtue of the World Cup win in 2006 – which included knockout round victories world powers like the Ukraine and Australia. Their fan base is largely ignorant of the blessed draws the Italians always seem to fall into – but keenly aware (read screaming “conspiracy”) of the odd time they may fall into a tough group.

The arrogance on the part of this fan base is obscene – the “Italiani” are masters of the double slap – only the Azzurri and their supporters could package a double insult in one simple statement. It isn’t good enough for them to question the integrity/character of the Dutch – no, they choose their words carefully enough so as to completely discount the Romanians (who won one and tied one against the Dutch in qualifying for the tournament).

The Italians, for the first time in ages, being lumped into a “group of death” at an international tournament are in unfamiliar territory – their usual strategy of picking up a couple of ties and sneaking out a win in the group stage hasn’t worked out this time, and to hear them speak, it is everyone else’s fault.

To the fans of the Azzurri, this page says, DEAL WITH IT. As fans of the Maple Leafs, we agonized for three hours on the final day of the 2006/2007 NHL season when the New Jersey Devils “rested” Martin Brodeur in a game that had playoff implications for us.

The best possible result today would be a tie between the Italians and the French – and a win by the Dutch. That just might leave the Azzurri speechless…but knowing them like I do, I highly doubt it.

TUESDAY THREE PLAY
Ugly week last week – this week will be better.

New York over San Diego – the Yankees should be able to rough up Randy Wolf; meanwhile the Padres couldn’t hit off of Hurricane Hazel. Lay $100 on the Yankees - $165.

Chicago over Pittsburgh – Vasquez over Snell…enough said. Lay $100 on the White Sox - $170.

Los Angeles over Cincinnati – Chad Billingsley is the most likely candidate to right this mess in Los Angeles. Lay $100 on the Dodgers + $105.

A big welcome to Brian Burke, errr Al Coates, as Director of Player Personnel in Toronto. The Leafs announced the hiring of Coates, who has a long history with Leafs interim GM Cliff Fletcher - did I mention that Coates spent the last six seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, the last two as senior advisor to one Brian Burke.

Burke is coming to Toronto - COUNT ON IT.

Today could be a very interesting day in European Soccer - two of the bigger craphole team, the French and the Italian, kick off today in a must win match to progress on to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008. Both teams are tied for third in their group with one point from two matches - all the talk that these two were regarded as favourites was just that - TALK. A win could be a moot point today - if Romania, who are second in the group with two points, beat the Dutch who have already guaranteed themselves a spot in the quarters.

The French seem resigned to losing - they should be, they are not a threat to win anything. The Italians aren't going down with threats - they have made it known they EXPECT Holland to beat Romania handily, anything less would result in Italy having a look at the game. Typical Italian garbage at a big tournament - often blessed with creampuff draws - these clowns would have people believe that there is some sort of plot against having them win the tournament...they are oblivious to the fact that THEY NEED TO SCORE...you can't win a 0-0 game (well, technically you can in soccer...but you have to make to to the knockout round first).

The Italians have completely dismissed the fact that the Romanian beat the Dutch at home and tied them in the Netherlands during qualifying for the Euro - the Italians would rather believe that there was a conspiracy to keep them from winning the tournament, rather than face the fact that their team lacks the offensive creativity and capacity of the teams that are actually making things happen this time around.

In a just world - the Italians would win today, knocking out the stinking French...and a late goal by Romania would give them the win, thus knocking out Italy. But the world isn't always just - something tells me we are going to have to listen to these clowns for at least another few days.

Portugal gets Germany on Thursday - more on that tomorrow.

One of the most talked about side stories of this year's European Championships is "Where will Cristiano Ronaldo play in 2008/09?" Real Madrid is said to have an offer on the table which would see the club pay Manchester United anywhere between $120 - 140 MILLION for the transfer of the Portuguese superstar AND pay him a reported salary of $30 million AFTER TAXES. Ronaldo's performance against the Czech Republic probably pushed the numbers up a bit.

Does anyone want to tell me that he won't be the FIFA World Player of the Year?

In other welcome developments at the big tournament. The Greeks and Italians have found out that the defensive style that won them the last two major championships isn't working this year - the style of play has been more attacking in nature, and as such, these two who have played a smothering defensive style and hope to sneak a goal on the counter attack or via a set piece to win the game, have found that they are S.O.L this year.

The Greeks were particularly embarrassing against the Swedes, playing FIVE defenders with one lone striker - at one point during the game, the Greeks were passing the ball to each other inside their own half with the Swedes waiting for them to come forward...disgusting; the one-trick pony looks like they are on their way to the glue factory and the tournament is better for it.

In perhaps the most welcome news - Italy and France face each other tomorrow in a must-win game if either hope to advance to the quarter finals of the tournament. Both sit tied for third in the Group of Death, one point behind Romania who face the already qualified Dutch. IF, and it is a big IF, the Romanians were to upset the Dutch tomorrow, both Italy and France would be out of the tournament- can I get a "Hell yeah!" The Italians, often the beneficiaries of ridiculously easy qualifying groups, look very beatable in the tournament's most competitive group - their lack of creativity and offensive talent has shone through in the tournament and downgraded them from being one of the tournament's favourites, down to the category of also-rans.

The French aren't even worth discussing - they came into the tournament with some high (false hopes) built on big reputations...but the reality is that they aren't a threat to anyone. Some will point to how they recovered from a horrible start at the 2006 World Cup to reach the Finals - to that I say, "The Mad Minator from Marseilles" isn't here to guide this group of overrated sad sacks.

SATURDAY THREE PLAY
Cleveland over San Diego - Cliff Lee goes for the Indians, that is as close to "money in the bank" as you can get this year. Lay $100 on the Tribe - $180.
Arizona over Kansas City - can't see the Royals winning on the road, even against a very hittable Randy Johnson. Lay $100 on the DBacks -$170.

Seattle over Washington - the number is big for a bad Mariners team, but they are at home, have Eric Bedard on the hill, and they are facing the Nationals. Lay $100 on the Mariners - $200.

Time to Show Who is Boss

The news of the day is obviously day 5 of UEFA’s 2008 European Cup, with Portugal taking on the Czech Republic – with both teams having won their opening game, a win by either side would guarantee a spot in the Quarter-Finals, likely as the winner of Group A.

The good guys beat Turkey 2-0 in their opening game but their lack of finishing was a bit of a cause for concern, as well as their defense on set pieces and crosses coming into the box – the latter will be of particular concern with the Czech’s fielding 6’9” striker Jan Koller.

The Czechs won their opening game against co-host Switzerland, but it was by no means an easy or memorable victory – as a matter of fact, the Czech acknowledged they were fortunate to win the game.

It shouldn’t come as a shock that both teams are downplaying their opposition and instead focusing on their game – Portugal knows they need to bury their chances and the Czechs know they have to pick up their game. Cristiano Ronaldo was not a huge factor in the opening game – expect that to change today. Portugal 2 – 1 Czech Republic.

Time for a long overdue Champs and Chumps entry – for those of you who have recently found the page, as you can imagine, the entry focuses on newsmakers from the past week (both the good and the bad). We used to call on Hazel to present the awards – but she may be a bit busy these days, so we’ll do the honours for her.

THE CHAMPS

BASEBALL
Cincinnati Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 600th career home run – one of the few (if not “only”) milestone moments over the last decade that hasn’t had the suspicion of steroid or performance enhancing substances use hanging over it. Griffey has to be considered the best “all-natural” player of his generation.

Boston Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez hit his 500th home run – another guy with no doubts about how he did it – but he gets mucho amor here today for being the first person to deliveri a long overdue, and very well deserved, “bish-slap” to the mug of Kevin Youkilis. It’s about time someone in that dugout did what 99.9% of non-Red Sox fans (and likely 80% of Red Sox Nation) would love to do. Take it down a notch Youk – the game does not hinge on every single one of your at-bats man…you’re not that important.

FOOTBALL (SOCCER)
Germany striker Lukas Podolski scored two goals in Germany’s win over Poland on Sunday – in both cases, Podolski was rather subdued and business like. When asked, Podolski (who was born in Poland) said that he didn’t want to show up the team representing his country of birth, a country that a large number of family members still reside. Good for him.

Spanish striker David Villa scored a hat-trick yesterday against Russia – he could have had at least two more, but three ain’t bad.

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win against Greece yesterday – in and of itself, it may not be that newsworthy, but the goal was a deathblow to the defending (counterfeit) champions who played with five defenders in hopes of a draw or a lucky goal to win it. The one-trick pony that won last time has been flogged to death – PLAY THE DAMN GAME GREECE…you had no business being that the tournament in ’04 and you have no business being there this year.

Ottakring Braueri AG of Vienna has offered a lifetime supply of free beer to any member of the Austrian National team who scores the first goal at the tournament – the brewery’s Chief, Sigi Menz has offered to personally deliver the beer for the first year. Now that is getting behind your national team.

THE CHUMPS

BASEBALL
Toronto Blue Jays P AJ Burnett was booed off the field this past weekend after giving up 8 earned runs over 4.1 innings to the Orioles – Burnett acknowledged (mocked) the crowd by tipping his cap as he walked off the field. He later apologized, saying it was probably not the best reaction to the boos – ya think?

GOLF
Tiger Woods made a half-hearted attempt at humour (in his words) when asked about who he liked to win the Stanley Cup – Woods answered the question with a question of his own, something to the effect of “does anyone even watch hockey anymore?” He doesn’t have to be down with hockey (though he later claimed to be a big fan of watching hockey from the stands), but he could show fellow athletes a little more respect.

WEDNESDAY THREE PLAY
A pretty good week last week – the upward trend continues.

Los Angeles over San Diego – the offensively challenged Padres are no match for Chad Billingsley. Lay $100 on the Dodgers - $105.

Philadelphia over Florida – the Marlins haven’t been good to Cole Hamels, but he is too good to be dominated by them. Lay $100 on the Phillies - $150.

Portugal 2 - 0 Turkey

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae, who likely isn't sitting in front of her HD TV watching Euro 2008...but she gets a pass.

A just result on yesterday's opening day of the big tournament. Portugal, favoured going into the game against Turkey, scored two second half goals - defender Pepe in the 61st minute, and substitute midfielder Raul Meireles in the 93rd minute.

The Quinas dominated the game and probably should have had at least four, if not more, goals - while there is much to be happy about, the lack of finishing is cause for some concern. The silver lining is that Portugal dominated a game in which their superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, was not the dominant player on the pitch. Pepe, playing in his first international tournament for Portugal, was a champ at both ends of the pitch - scoring a first half goal that was called back for offside. Simao, who played the wing opposite Ronaldo was a threat all night - I would have included him in the Quinas/Red Sox comparison, but that would have necessitated posting a pitch of Youkilis (and NO ONE needs to see that mug any more than they already do).

While Pepe and Simao starred for Portugal - the third star has to go to the German referee Herbert Fandel who called an excellent game by asserting his leadership early on. Under Fandel's watchful eye, a few early dives (both ways) were not rewarded with free kicks - Fandel also used his judgment in letting the play move on after a foul (playing "advantage"). The only drawback in Fandel's game was that he was so conscious to diving (encouraged by Turkish fans who booed everytime someone fell) missed a red card at the end of the game, when Turkish defender Aurelio went cleats first on a vicious challenge against Nani.

All in all though - a very good start to the tournament.

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae on this first day of Euro 2008.

Those of you residing in Massachusetts are aware of the presence of the Portuguese in your great state - outside of Portugal, Massachusetts if home to the the largest segment of people who trace their ancestry back to the motherland. While most of them are members of Red Sox Nation - the hope here is that they will be tuning in today to watch Portugal play Turkey on the opening day of the big tournament.

The similarities between the Red Sox and the Quinas are striking - well, they were before Hazel brought the good karma to Boston in 2004 - full of potential, full of hope, in quest of a the championship. The countdown is on - Euro 2008 in 24+ hours; and the decision from would-be Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson who has been given a deadline day of Monday to accept the coaching position in Toronto. With all due respect to Mr. Wilson, who could be working in the centre of the hockey universe, the world (outside of our friends down south) will be watching Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo - arguably the most recognizable sports figure on the planet.

Ronaldo goes into this tournament with the weight and expectations of the world on his shoulders - he will be the most watched person at the tournament.

Those of us who love the "Quinas" will look to him to lead our boys to their first international championship - we hope the best player on the planet will carry over his form from this past season and lead us to victory. While we hope for the best, if we were being honest about things we would acknowledge that this team is likely to peak in 2010 or 2012 - that is not to say we don't have the players to get it done in the world's toughest championship to win, it is just acknowledging that we aren't the front runners, but we will be a factor. With a little luck, who knows? Just ask the Greeks.

Those who aren't fans of Ronaldo will be looking to scrutinize (criticize) every move he makes - and of course pinning the failure to win sqaurely on the shoulders of the TWENTY THREE year old wonderkid. The English media have never quite forgiven him for the incident at the 2006 World Cup where they accused Ronaldo of getting Shrek (aka Wayne Rooney) red-carded for a boot to the groin of Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho. The English media is lying in wait to roast the kid for anything less than a dominant tournament, resulting in a win for the Portuguese.

He has the weight of the world on his shoulders, and the support of a nation (which reaches all four corners of the globe) behind him. Either way, this is one of the few athletes in the world who is truly worth the price of admission and one who can single-handedly carry a team to the promised land.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUGGESTIONS

New York over Toronto - a case of the lesser of two perceived evils, Mussina vs Litsch, I'll go with the Yankees in tonight's game. Lay $100 on the Yanks - $130.

Cleveland over Texas - still having a hard time believing that Sidney Ponson is pitching relatively well; but I'll go with Cliff Lee and the Tribe tonight. Lay $100 on Cleveland - $145.

San Diego over Chicago - after seeing Lilly pitch last week at Wrigley Field (albeit from the bleacher seats) count me amongst the unimpressed; Maddux on the other hand has been pretty good. Lay $100 on the Padres +$115. Upset special.

Detroit over Pittsburgh - after a thrilling triple overtime win by the Pens on Monday night, expect the Wings to end it tonight in Pittsburgh...they won't let it get away. Lay $100 on the Wings - $130.

NHL Commish Gary Bettman put the Toronto Maple Leafs on notice, albeit not directly mentioning the organization by name, when he said the league would investigate AND punish any team found (or believed) to be tampering.

The Leafs have offered former Sharks coach, and self-professed Canadian media hater, Ron Wilson. Leaf haters in Canada have come out in force, charging the Leafs with trying to get around tampering charges by offering the vacant coaching position of one of Brian Burke's best friends in hockey - the aforementioned Ron Wilson. The haters point to their friendship, dating back to their playing days at Providence, and the fact that Burke is Godfather to Ron Wilson's child.

The haters have gone as far as to suggest that Burke is "quietly" pulling the strings in Toronto, that Ron Wilson would never accept a job in Canada if he didn't have assurances that Burke would be there to guide the team he was going to coach. Is that the case? Doubtful, Burke has too much integrity to do that - but likely more a case of the Leafs forcing Anaheim's hand and letting Burke know that IF/WHEN he comes to Toronto, he will have a coach he can work with.

Speaking of tampering, the most sought after free agent is getting offers while still technically under contract. The word is that Hazel did the media tour (radio) to dispel any notions that she is leaving NESN because of a contract dispute. Hazel has chosen to take the high road in explaining why she has (amicably) parted ways with her employer - but that hasn't stopped media outlets from courting Hazel to join their outfit. While graciously declining, citing that she is still an employee of NESN, you can bet that come July 1 - there will be three big news stories in the world of sports.

1) Anaheim releases Brian Burke from his contract to allow him to accept the vacant GM's job with the Maple Leafs;

2) Hazel Mae accepts a position with a national media outlet (the betting here is Fox Sports, though me thinks Rogers Sportsnet should get involved in the bidding);

3) Portugal still in rapture after winning Euro 2008.

I'm going with that

Burke No #2 on Leafs list

Anaheim GM Brian Burke was interviewed during last night's game between Pittsburgh and Detroit - when asked about the alleged extension on the table from the Ducks, Burke first dismissed the question by saying the focus should be on the Stanley Cup, then reiterated that he liked the Ducks ownership. Burke was again non-committal, he likely had not yet heard that the most attractive potential GM in the NHL was now free to talk to Toronto about the vacant post.

Hazel Mae announced that she would be leaving NESN at the end of the month to pursue other opportunities. While speculation is that she might be considering ESPN - an anonymous source says that Mae will meet with Leafs' interim GM Cliff Fletcher next week to discuss the possibility of taking over her beloved Maple Leafs.

While there will undoubtedly be speculation that ESPN will talk to Hazel about opportunities there - Leaf Nation says "Come on back home Hazel - the Leafs need Hazel Karma at the ACC every night".

New England's loss will be Canada's gain - as it should be.

Mats' silence speaks volumes

Mats Sundin was in Pittsburgh to attend Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals - Napoloen Bettman and the other donkeys in the NHL's head office are taking a page from the good folks at the NFL and asking the big stars to attend the big event.

Sundin had to know that he was going to be asked about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs and in the league itself. Sundin was his usual self - guarded - not giving anything away and keeping all of his options open. When asked if the Leafs search for a GM could impact his decision, Sundin answered in the affirmative, saying:

"I think it will have an effect, knowing how we played the last three years, how we missed the playoffs. I would like to see that the team is making a real effort to improve."

When further pressed about signing somewhere else, Mats was non-committal, but...

"I have not even thought about it. The biggest thing is I want to see what happens with the Leafs first."

This is all about Brian Burke - the one thing Leaf Nation better come to grips with is that if Burke takes over, Sundin isn't likely to be resigned. Over and above Burke's preference for North American players, he isn't likely to sign Sundin to anything more than a one year deal, and the talk is Sundin is looking for 2-3 years.

Interesting times in the Nation - who do we want? The man who has been the face of the franchise for the last decade? The man who won the Mark Messier Award for leadership?

OR

Do we want the man who is going to make some tough, and very unpopular, decisions in order to the the blue and white back to being a legitimate Cup contender?

Hard to believe we might be able to have our cake and eat it too.

If Sundin leaves the Leafs after July 1st - you can bet it was because he knows Burke is coming; conversely, if he signs a 2-3 year deal, it likely means Burke won't be running the Leafs this season.

The Stanley Cup Finals are in full swing and it hasn’t turned out to be what anyone, especially the NHL’s head office, had hoped for. The “battle for the ages” with the up and coming (young) Pittsburgh Penguins against the veteran-laden “battle-tested” (old) Detroit Red Wings has turned out to be a matchup of boys versus men – with the boys being schooled.

The Stanley Cup Finals are, for all intents and purposes, over – the chances of the Penguins winning four of the next five is a hair’s width away from zero. Naturally, the NHL brass, lead by Napoleon Bettman wants all the attention focused on the NHL’s showpiece – the Finals – but darn it all if the Maple Leafs aren’t making news (at least they are in Canada).

The NHL has had an unofficial (but really official) policy that the only news during the Stanley Cup Playoffs – especially the Finals – should be the on-ice product; major announcement should be kept until after Lord Stanley’s mug is awarded. This year, teams are ignoring that directive (yes, I think it is a directive) and making organizational moves such as firing coaches…oh yeah, and searching for a new GM. Which of course bring things back to the center of the hockey universe – Toronto – and the Leafs’ purported desire to bring Brian Burke in to run the big show.

Napoleon, so afraid that a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in three years could overshadow the Cup Finals (which isn’t as compelling as they would like to believe), took the bold step of issuing an ultimatum (albeit without mentioning them by name) on the issue of Brian Burke leaving Anaheim to run Hazel’s favourite hockey team. Mr. Bettman has threatened stiff punishment for any team suspected of, or caught, “tampering” with a player or employee under contract with another team. The punishment would range from removal of draft picks to cash penalties – or in the case of the Toronto Maple Leafs who are swimming in cash – BOTH.

The absurdity of Napoleon’s interpretation of “tampering” has been discussed here before – his interference and insistence that teams with vacancies consider Colin Campbell for a management position is laughable, as meddling in an organization’s business isn’t that far removed from tampering itself.

While Bettman’s threat is intended to uphold the sanctity of a contract in the NHL – it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that it is all about the business of the NHL and the devastating effect Burke’s departure would have on the Ducks’ franchise. One has to wonder if Bettman would be so direct in issuing a threat if it was a case of a superstar GM leaving a well established hockey market to take a job with one of the league’s fledgling franchises – in other words, a GM leaving New York to take a job with one of the Florida-based teams. You can bet that if Burke wanted to leave to rescue one of those franchises, Bettman would be supporting it to show how attractive every market is in the NHL and would be praying to his god that Burke got the job done. But as Toronto is an established market, and cash cow for the league, he wants to prevent the move from happening, as it has no additional financial benefit to the league.

Bettman has interjected himself into a situation where he has no business being involved – while there is a signed contract between Burke and the Ducks – if Burke wants to leave to take on the ultimate job in the league, who is Bettman to say anything? The issue is between Burke and the Ducks, if the ownership group in Anaheim is willing to publicly assert that they will not release an employee who would rather be somewhere else, then they should step up and say it. Burke, for his part, has spoken volumes with very few, and measured, words – having “no plans to talk to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the near future” means he wants to go, but can’t publicly say it.

The NHL’s interference in the matter has only served to make the Leafs the laughing stock of the hockey world – making them go through the motions of interviewing “potential” GM candidates, saying all the right things, while all the while having a contract ready to sign with the guy everyone knows should be running the show.

Napoleon should focus more on the problems with the league – notice how talk of awful officiating has been quashed? – and leave the business of the league to the billionaires who run it.

Brian Burke in Toronto for the beginning of the 08/09 season? Can we get a “Hell Yeah”?

Must see TV - Love this clip...Kudos to Canada's Sports Leader who are doing an excellent job of building the hype for...

Game one of the Stanley Cup Finals goes today - the media, rather than trying to hype the individual matchups (Crosby v Lidstrom), are instead focusing on comparing the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Edmonton Oilers of the 80's who were on the cusp of greatness when they met the dynasty that were the New York Islanders.

For some reason, just can't get into the Cup finals.

The Leafs farm team, the Toronto Marlies, fell to the Chicago Wolves last night. The compelling story here is coach Greg Gilbert's decision to turn to go into the playoffs with veteran goalie Scott Clemmensen rather than Justin Pogge. Pogge got into the series when there Marlies were down by 3-0; Pogge won one and lost one. While many in the nation were outraged at the decision - having read Gilbert's belief that he owed it to his players and the organization to instill a winning attitude and Clemmensen gave the baby Leafs the best chance of winning. Gilbert pointed to the development of players who were called up this season, rather than just talking about Pogge. I get it, I may not agree 100% - but with Toskala looking like he is going to carry the load next year, Gilbert's decision says that Pogge will be back with the Marlies next season.

SATURDAY THREE PLAY

Just Wondering...

A few random thoughts/observations and questions today.

I should know better – living in the land of the Tards. Last week, the city/country was in rapture over Canada making it to the finals of the IIHF World Hockey Championships to face Russia. It was a big deal last week and had everyone pounding their chests – a blown lead, a loss in overtime, and now the tournament means nothing as “it wasn’t the best on best”. Then what was the big deal about them making it to the finals in the first place – wasn’t every country there missing some of their best players?

Speaking of the land of the Tards – perhaps the most asinine thing ever said on sport radio was uttered this morning at the Team 1200. One of the topics today was about a “physically challenged” sprinter from South Africa by the name of Oscar Pistourius who was given permission to compete at the Olympic Games. The discussion was about whether his blades give him and advantage over able-bodied sprinters – which lead one of the donkeys to remark

Are we going to see a day when the final of the 100M is going to be made up of blade runners?

You can ponder/discuss the sheer stupidity of such a statement. If you need more evidence, just stream one of their morning broadcasts.

Well, the moment Patriots fans have been waiting for – the Patriot’s beat reporter from the Boston Herald posted his first article since his now famous (famous/notorious, just plain lame) explanation for error in judgment in reporting/sensationalizing/fabricating the big story on Spygate. Six or so hours in – 10 comments; none to do with the story on Pats draft Brandon Merriweather. Comments are being monitored and deleted by site administrators. It seems the good folks of New England aren’t going to let it go – how long can this go? Does the Herald take comments to mean people are reading?

Not sure why so many outside of New England are so enraged about the interview Bill Belichick did with CBS. What did people expect? The interview was a joke – but it was pretty much what everyone has (should have) come to expect from Belichick – no substantive answers and little useful information. Did anyone really expect him to focus on anything but discrediting Matt Walsh? What is the point in talking to this guy? To Patriots fans that were enraged by comments made by the Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan on the issue – he’s absolutely right; the Patriots will forever be tainted (right or wrong) and your anger should be directed at your own coach. If the Patriots didn’t benefit from the videotaping, why continue to do it?

Congratulations to Boston Red Sox P Jon Lester on throwing a no-hitter against the Royals. While he has acknowledged his courageous battle against cancer – does anyone think he might not want to hear “cancer survivor” before his name every time he accomplishes something?
It seems as though some of the “Peeps” in Boston have yet to warm up to NESN’s Red Sox field reporter Heidi Watney – no judgments here. Haven’t seen her yet – but give her some time, Boston is a tough (but worthwhile) gig. Ask Hazel.

Is there any point in watching the NBA Playoffs? With very few exceptions, home team wins.

WEDNESDAY THREE PLAY
Arizona over Florida – hating the D’Backs after yesterday’s loss to the Marlins (another blown Pro-Line ticket) but they get the nod tonight with Brandon Webb on the mound. Lay $100 on Arizona - $165.

Boston/KC over 10.5 – Bartolo Colon (coming back from stint in minors) vs “batting practice” Brett Tomko should mean a lot of runs for both sides. Lay $100 on the over - $120.

Couldn't help but sneak a peek or two to see the comments section attached to the Boston Herald's apology to the Patriots and the follow up "explanation" by John Tomase. The post was in and of itself a joke - and a clever marketing ploy by the Herald to generate tens of thousands of hits to its website.

While it should come as no surprise that support for Tomase was at less than 1% - it was funny to see how many people swore that they would never buy another copy of the paper, much less read it. I wonder if these people realize that a visit to the website, while not constituting a purchase of the paper, is as good as buying one to the Herald when they sell advertising space on their page. No one is going to get fired - in my humble opinion, it was a calculated gamble to draw attention to the paper.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY
3-0 last night - the week has been pretty darn good. Today's suggestions:

Well let me start by officially welcoming the summer to Canada...it has been a long, long and I mean long winter this year in the great white north and nothing is better then walking down the street to see many of Canada's beautiful women enjoying the weather.

Typically we don't write too much about the NBA, but did anyone see that cheap shot Robert Horry delivered to David West last night? Is Horry that desperate to win another championship? The guy should have been heavily fined and suspended for his hip check on Steve Nash last year and now he delivers a shot to the back of West, who is already suffering from a bad back. If the Cinderella Hornet's (behind MVP Chris Paul)lose this series the Spurs will have to thank Cheap Shot Bob for his contribution. It's too bad that the series has come to this considering the attention that the play of the two point guards (Paul and the Spur's Tony Parker), who are putting on a PG clinic.

I refuse to talk about hockey - since the Leafs are out.

Baseball - for those fantasy baseball owners who have roster space available the current HOT commodity is Jay Bruce. The young outfielder for the Cinninatti Reds will likely be called up soon (he's absolutely crushing Triple A pitching right now). Rumour has it that the Reds will unload Ken Griffey Jr. to the Seattle Mariners and call up Bruce to replace him. Bruce is nearly a can't miss prospect and there are many (including your's truly) that have stashed him on their roster since the start of the season. This year's Ryan Braun.

Finally, the last topic I'm going to write on is...the World Series of Poker and their recent announcement that the final table will be delayed by approximately 4 months. This is a move being done by Harrah's (which owns the rights to the WSOP) to "promote" the game and "build interest" in the final table. The final table will be aired live after the ESPN broadcast of the event. This is a four month delay and really breaks the mold of poker tournaments. The final table participants will then have 4 months to study, dissect and prepare for the final table and their opponents. While I can understand the need to promote the event, I think this is a terrible way for the final table to happen. You change the dynamics of the game and it no longer becomes a grind to the final table. The final table will also become more stategic and players will be forced to change their playing style once they return to finish the tournament. Ladies and Gents, meet Canada's Sports Leader's NHL INSIDER - Hazel would need no introduction as they are former colleagues - this guy is THE MAN. This guy is as connected and TSN's Pierre McGuire, he always seems to be breaking big stories hours before anyone else (probably due in large part to the wealth of contacts he has inside a number of NHL organizations). TSN paid big bucks to lure Dreger away from Rogers Sportsnet and here is why - from the desk of Darren Dreger on Wednesday afternoon :

Dave Nonis leaves Toronto with options.

Nonis spent much of Tuesday and part of Wednesday afternoon in discussions with the Toronto Maple Leafs about their management restructuring with further talks over the next few days expected.

Sources tell TSN Nonis hasn't been offered the position of general manager and the belief is Toronto's interest in bringing him on board seems to be directed more towards helping interim GM Cliff Fletcher with the day-to-day business of managing the Maple Leafs, with growing speculation suggesting Fletcher will hold the post through next season.

The two sides have agreed to take a couple of days before reconvening for another round of discussions.

In the meantime, the St Louis Blues remain keenly interested in Nonis, along with former Dallas Stars general manager Doug Armstrong. Either man would be considered a good fit in the Blues management group and would provide a suitable replacement for Larry Pleau for when the longtime Blues GM slips into retirement.

The third option Nonis may consider is doing nothing at all.

Nonis remains under contract with the Vancouver Canucks and will be paid through next season which offers the 41 year old some flexibility to ensure his next move will provide both the security and opportunity he's looking for.

YOU SEE? On one hand, Nonis might sign with the Leafs as Asst GM; but then again, he may not.

BECAUSE

Dallas and St. Louis are interested in Nonis too.

BUT

They are also interested in Doug Armstrong.

SO

Nonis may just decide to do nothing.

So in less that 250 the NHL Insider - has every angle covered, making sure that his "sources" end up being right about where Nonis winds up - Toronto, another team, or nowhere. Of course stupid bloggers who speculate (May 8) about Nonis being an Asst. GM (defacto GM was the scenario envisioned on this page) are talking crap because they don't have "sources" like the Insider...with bloggers, its purely speculation/opinion/wish. But with Darren, it's all about the sources man. Never mind that they always work in the "Because/But/So" angle.

What a donk.

"God Bless America" a stirring song no doubt, and that coming from a Canadian; but if this Canadian (card carrying member of Leaf Nation) only has to hear it one more time during the NHL playoffs...that's just fine.

The stinking Philadelphia Flyers opened Game 3 of the Conference Finals with Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America - which of course prompts announcers to reference the Flyers' record when "Kate Smith sings" - it didn't do the Flyers, or their retarded fans, an ounce of good last night as they lost to the Penguins by a count of 4-1.

Leaf Nation is feeling the love for the Penguins these days as they have dispatched with the Tards, the Habs and now the Flyers. Die-hard members of the Nation would love to see the Penguins dispatch with our once hated rivals in Detroit...but the first three is enough for most of us.

A reporter from the Toronto Star, NOT named Damien Cox, must have been scrambling for something to write about - news today that Phoenix Coyotes co-owner Wayne Gretzky is not interested in becoming the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This might be the most asinine thing written about the Leafs search for upper management. When was Gretzky's name ever mentioned? Lame doesn't even begin to describe the article.

Not sure what school of journalism
Speaking of lame - the Boston Herald posted an apology to the New England Patriots and their fans for accusations leveled at the organization that they videotaped the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough before the 2002 Super Bowl. The comments (venom) are rolling in fast and furious from outraged Pats fans - if you think you were in the midst of a bad day...think about what a certain beat reporter at the Herald must be feeling.

Anyone with more than a casual interest in the NHL knows that things are exactly looking great for our beloved Maple Leafs (still including Hazel as one of us); thanks in large part to the departed John Ferguson Jr. who made a mess of things with bad contract offers, ill-advised trades, and very poor drafting. The only consolation for Leaf Nation is that as bad as Ferguson was, he isn't anywhere near as bad as another sports executive in Toronto.

It has been a while, but it is time to bring Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Riccardi back front and center. The Chickenhawk boldly predicted that the 2008 Blue Jays were talented enough to compete with the likes of the Red Sox and Yankees - one quarter of the way into the season and the Blue Jays are in last place in the AL East with an 18-22 record. Things aren't looking good for the Jays with news that their CF Vernon Wells would be lost for 6-8 weeks with a wrist injury. The Hawk's answer to Wells injury was to sign free agent Brad Wilkerson and Texas Rangers farm-hand Kevin Mench. Ricciardi has told the fans and media in Toronto that he is done tinkering with the roster for the year - its Wilkerson/Mench or bust until Vernon Wells comes back.

Ricciardi has always had an excuse for past failures - lack of talent, lack of money, lack of luck, and too many injuries to overcome - for the most part, he has gotten a free pass in Toronto as fans waited for the man who studied under Billy Beane to implement the Moneyball philosophy in Toronto. Seven years into the five-year plan and the jig seems to be up - the fans and media are starting to turn and the issue of whether or not J.P. should be canned is receiving some serious attention. The Fan 590 in Toronto spent an hour between games 1 and 2 of the Jays doubleheader with Cleveland talking about what is wrong with the Jays. The finger is starting to be pointed right at Ricciardi - there is no talk of payroll, no talk of whether Manager Gibbons should be the fall guy, no talk of bad luck cursing the Jays - the talk is all about poor decision making and a lack of vision for the team.

It all comes down to one line Jim Kelley said - paraphrasing - Ricciardi seems to have forgotten, or ignored, the fact that Toronto fans know what a winning baseball team looks like, they've seen a winner and they know enough to know that this Jays team isn't even close. Ricciardi has been playing a game of "three-shell monty" with Jays fans...it is about to come to an end.

J.P. Ricciardi and Ferguson's tenures in Toronto are marked by the same poor decision making - both being over-matched in their respective fields. Toronto fans have rid themselves of one weak GM...could the other (and definitely weaker) be far behind?

HOCKEY
With the Conference Championships featuring four American based teams - the majority of fans in Canada have turned their attention to the World Hockey Championships. The highlight of the tournament so far has to be the post-game press conference where Team USA Coach John Tortorella was asked about the awful call that resulted in a goal against the US. When asked if he was accusing the officials of being biased or incompetent, Tortorella responded by saying "No, I'm accusing them of blindness." Classic...the NHL needs this guy to stay in the league - he is worth the price of admission. John Tortorella is a CHAMP - love this guy.

TUESDAY THREE PLAY
Last week ended off on a bad note - but the total for the week was even. A new week starts with a positive outlook. Today's suggestions:

Boston over Baltimore - the Sox should rebound after a tough couple of games against the Twins, especially with Josh Beckett on the mound - the O's are falling back to earth after a nice start. Lay $100 on the Sox - $165.

Toronto Maple Leafs LW Jason Blake was nominated for the Masterton Trophy award - given to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, determination and perseverance. Blake has told the Toronto media he would accept a trade out of Toronto - one question Jason. What do you think the market is out there for an over-paid, under-achieving LW who still have 4 years and $16M left on his contract? I'd say not much or your can would have been gone by the trade deadline. Cliff Fletcher should start Blake in the minors next year - no trade, no buyout, no roster spot.

The Devil's Advocate

Whatever happened to opinion in sports journalism? There was a time when "columnists" would write about an issue, providing their point of view and letting their readers discuss. Today, it seems like the role of these columnists is to look at an issue - dissect it to death from every possible angle - and carefully word their pieces to avoid being nailed down to a position on said issue. Some have been very successful (widely read and hated for it) in publishing provocative pieces that don't really say much but raise questions for discussions. Others have adopted "The Devil's Advocate" approach to sports journalism - all in the name of stirring public debate on said issue; at least that is what they say their purpose is.

Which of course brings things back to Toronto Star Associate Editor/Sports Columnist/Blogger/Resident Curmudgeon Damien Cox. Damien has carved out a nice (I guess) career crapping on all things Toronto Maple Leafs - whatever course of action the organization takes (right or wrong) is sure to bring some smug column about how "they just don't get it". Over the last year, Cox was particularly (though never directly) critical of Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. Many a day, Cox mailed it in with another article about how JFJ was in over his head and was largely responsible for the state of affairs at the ACC. Cox's angle was that the Leafs needed an experienced GM - someone who could handle the media and the Board of Directors at MLSE.

When Leafs President Richard Peddie (I just threw up in my mouth acknowledging that) stated that the Leafs were looking for a GM who was a proven winner - Damien was all over that; actually a 180 degree shift from what he had been saying for months. Cox decided to mock the organization's desire to hire a winner by pointing to the men running the teams currently vying for the right to compete for the Stanley Cup. Damien looked at Ken Holland, Ray Shero, Paul Holmgren and Brett Hull - pointing to the fact that each went into their current jobs without a Stanley Cup ring (Hull's ring came as a player) - as proof positive that the Leafs don't need a proven winner, they need a progressive thinking GM.

In Damien's world - being the Devil's Advocate means you are always right, never wrong and that you will forever have something negative to write about the hometown team.

In today's Star - Damien actually makes his opinion known to Leaf Nation about his "Dream Team" for the Maple Leafs; a departure from the usual drivel he publishes. Of course, no dream team article would be completely without ruling out the potential of Brian Burke winding up in Toronto. Cox's power troika would have Colin Campbell as President, Dave Nonis as GM (Cox wants Fletcher gone) and Craig Hartsburg as coach. Two out of three ain't bad Damien - we'll take a pass on Campbell.

On the surface, the article is good - but if you have read Cox before, you know that his columns are always premised on having an escape article. Methinks the suggestion that Nonis be GM, is premised solely on the number of articles he could write about how Nonis isn't Burke and how Leaf Nation has to get over the man love we all have for Burke.

Someone should really punch that smug mug of his.

SATURDAY THREE PLAY

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that they had relieved coach Paul Maurice of his duties – that was about the only tangible thing members of Leaf Nation took away from yesterday’s press conference. “Interim” GM Cliff Fletcher waxed on about a new era – new management, a new coach and some new players – but those in attendance, and members of the Nation are left to speculate about what it all means.

As things stand now, the NHL’s flagship franchise is without a “permanent” GM, a head coach and a Captain, as Mats Sundin has yet to make a decision on his future. While some have been quick to point to this very fact as proof positive about how dysfunctional the organization is – some, yours truly included, are wondering if this is the beginning of the gutting process before Brian Burke comes to Toronto after the 2008/09 season.

The Maple Leafs have asked the Vancouver Canucks for permission to speak to recently fired GM Dave Nonis – while the naysayers point to Nonis’ less that stellar performance in Vancouver; some of the more astute members of the Toronto media have not overlooked the fact that Brian Burke’s best friend in hockey is…you guessed it Dave Nonis.

What better way to convince Burke not to sign an extension with Anaheim, than to sign his closest confidant to a position in the organization – say, Asst. GM to Cliff Fletcher (with the understanding that he would be defacto GM until Burke comes on the scene) – to start the rebuilding process prior to his arrival.

After publicly stating that he would remain in Anaheim for the 2008/09 season, Burke has yet to sign the extension offered by Ducks ownership a couple of months back. Burke has rarely pulled any punches when asked about his feelings – it wouldn’t be a reach to speculate that Burke’s refusal to sign an extension is his way of publicly showing his displeasure that the Ducks changed their public stance of not preventing him from seeking other opportunities.

IF the Maple Leafs sign Dave Nonis, it would be a clear message to Burke that the organization is indeed willing to wait until the 2009/10 season. It would also force the Ducks hand with respect to their contractual obligations towards Burke – why would they want to retain a GM, albeit a great GM, when his head is likely a few thousand miles away.

Granted, this is all conjecture and a giant leap of faith (hope) – but that is pretty much what Leaf Nation is resigned to these days.

In the world of baseball – Toronto native Joey Votto hit three home runs and drove in four to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-0 pounding of the Chicago Cubs.

THURSDAY THREE PLAY
The total is looking very good this week (so far) after a 3-0 night on Tuesday – didn’t I tell you about A.J. Burnett? Today’s suggestions:

Minnesota over Chicago – upset special. White Sox starter John Danks hasn’t been very effective against the Twins; at least Kevin Slowey has one good start against the White Sox. Lay $100 on the Twins + $140.

Two of the most recognizable and celebrated athletes of our time are currently involved in scandals that threaten to tarnish their respective legacies – such as they are at this point in time.

William Roger Clemens
Once considered one of the true pitching legends in baseball – two time World Series winner (so what if he was a four time World Series loser), seven-time Cy Yong winner – also thought to be a freak of nature for his dominant performances well into his 40’s.

What is known
Roger can be a bit high strung and uber competitive – having once buzzed his own son with a eye level fastball after the younger Clemens took Roger deep in an exhibition game.

Roger is a meticulous groundskeeper – quick to pick up any broken bats and get them off the field of play so as not to interfere with the game; so what if his clearance happens to come closer to the base runner?

Accused of being a serial injector:
From injecting himself banned substances to injecting himself into a host of significant and not so significant others (depending on your criteria). It is further alleged that Roger had an improper relationship with a minor.

Adding insult to injury
Each sunrise seems to give rise to yet another person claiming a tryst of some sort with Roger – guess he really is a stud.

Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima – known the world over as “Ronaldo”
Once considered the next greatest thing to the immortal Pele in the world of international football (soccer) – two time World Cup Champion with Brazil, current record holder for most goals in World Cup tournaments, two-time FIFA World Player of the Year.

What is known
Ronaldo’s heart and commitment has been questioned – with some of his teammates claiming that he literally worried himself to sickness before the 1998 World Cup Final against France.

Ronaldo lives the samba lifestyle – life is one great big party for him. Once dubbed “Fatso” by the Spanish media, he was accused of focusing more on partying in restaurants and clubs in Madrid than on his playing career with Real Madrid.

Accused of being fat and kinky
The accusation of being a fatty has dogged him since his days in Spain – the kinky characterization is a result of the star being caught partying with three transvestite prositutes in a Rio de Janeiro hotel – while he is supposed to be home recuperating from a knee injury. It should be noted that Ronaldo didn’t break the law – the “girls” were of age and prostitution is legal in Brazil.

Adding insult to injury
UNICEF was quick to respond to Ronaldo’s claims that he had worked as an ambassador for the Uninted Nations children’s agency, saying that Ronaldo never occupied such a lofty position with the organization. Maybe Ronaldo was channelling Pele when he said that.

So the question of the day is – who had done more to damage his already sullied reputation?

This page has long maintained that at least 50% of the retards enlisted in “Sens Army” are refugees from the camp of “Les Canadiens” – the exponential rise of “Tards Army” early on in the millennium coincided with the decline of the “tri-colors” and the rise of the Tards. This theory was scoffed at by residents here in the land of the Tards, and explained by the fact that hockey fans here were getting behind the hometown team.

An interesting turn of events over the last couple of weeks following the Tards ouster from the playoffs at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. One might of thought that the 2007/08 hockey season would officially be pronounced dead here in “hockey country” (as referred to by Tards Army) – but a sudden, and rather alarming/sickening proliferation of the dreaded car flag is once again the rage in the land of the Tards; only this time, it’s the dreaded red, white and blue of the Habs that adorns cars all over the Nation’s Capital (that’s Ottawa for our American friends).

You can’t spit without hitting a car with a Montreal Canadiens flag – pull up alongside one of these cars and 9 times out of 10, the douchebag driving the car is adorned in at least one piece of SenaTards paraphernalia. Should you feel the irresistible urge to ask one of these donkeys about their choice in car flags, the most likely answer you’ll get is “The Habs are my second favourite team – they used to be my favourite until Ottawa came to town.” While it sounds like a reasonable, albeit pitiful excuse to put up the car flag, most of these “fans” couldn’t name five pre-2000 SenaTards. Coincidence or proof positive that fans of the Tards and Habs are one in the same – shameless fence-sitting turncoats?

Time to pack those car flags douchebags – or are the Penguins now your third favourite team?

The NHL’s Conference Finals are set, with the Penguins facing off against the Flyers and the Wings taking on the Stars – no predictions, as it would simply be a choice of the lesser of two evils in both series. A Pens/Stars series would be ok here.

When the Bruins traded Joe Thornton to the Sharks, yours truly was particularly critical of the deal – claiming the Bruins didn’t get nearly enough. While the argument holds true in terms of regular season performance – the playoffs are a completely different matter. Another poor playoff performance for Joe Thornton – he was practically invisible during the six games against Dallas – will this guy ever show up and dominate when it counts, or is he destined to be a playoff disappointment year after year? Unfortunately, it is looking like the latter. The sentiment here is that come April, Marco Sturm would get the nod before Joe Thornton.

Oh yeah, how about Ronaldo huh? No, the Brazilian player who got involved with transvestite hookers in Rio de Janeiro; Cristiano Ronaldo scores two more goals over the weekend to bring his season total to 40 goals in all competitions – FORTY FREAKIN GOALS.

MONDAY THREE PLAY

Ok, the weekend didn’t end with a flurry of winners – but it didn’t end with a flurry of losers either. Today’s suggestions:

Los Angeles over Kansas City – Ervin Santana goes against former Dodger (and what seems like countless other teams) Brett Tomko – good enough to suggest Santana. Lay $100 on the Angels - $140.

While much of the hockey world waits in anticipation for the ousting of the 2007/08 Montreal Canadiens (ok, maybe Leaf Nation waits), hockey fans are wondering of we are going to bid adieu to Colorado Avalanche Captain Joe Sakic.

After being swept by the Detroit Red Wings, Sakic said he was unsure about his future and would take some time over the summer to decide whether or not he is going to return for another season. Sakic has quietly been one of the best players of his generation - one of the only players today that you could say "he plays every shift the way the game is supposed to be played". The man has been a model of consistency and epitomized class; he is the ultimate role model for any player entering the NHL. Sakic has to be one of the most respected players to ever play the game - by fans and by his peers. If he decides to hang them up, he can look back on a great career and say that he has accomplished everything there is to in the game of hockey.

Thanks for the memories Joe - you'll be missed.

A pretty good example of why Flyers' fans rival Habs fans in terms of being one of the most hated fan bases in the NHL - over and above being douchebags. This is the kind of sign you would see at the Bell Centre - the kind that makes you go "Huh?" Whatever.

The Habs are down 3-1 to the Flyers and seem to be out of answers. The turning point in last night's game came when Habs fan-favourite Steve Bégin was called for interference for a cheap shot (borderline hit from behind) on the Flyers forward Sami Kapanen. The hit came with less than five minutes left in the game, with the Habs having all the momentum after having erased a 2-0 deficit with two quick goals.

Ironic huh? The primary reason for the Habs success this year has been the play of their special teams - especially their power play; for the last seven months, the Habs and their fans have applauded the officiating in the NHL for "calling it like it is - calling a good tight game where a penalty is a penalty"...now they'll all be crying about the call on Bégin. Let's hear them signing at the Bell Centre on Saturday night...

THURSDAY THREE PLAY

Chicago over Milwaukee - you have to like the "Big Z" today over Milwaukee. Lay $100 on the Cubs - $137.

Washington over Pittsburgh - scary proposition taking Odalis Perez, but Zach Duke has been awful of late. Lay $100 on the Nats - $129.

Los Angeles over Florida - tough for a road team to sweep a series - but Big Blue is on a roll right now. Lay $100 on the Dodgers - $126.

Welcome home Chickenhawk

So the Toronto Blue Jays roll into Fenway tonight – seemingly healthy and rid of dead weight mistakenly referred to as the “Big Hurt” (unless that was directed at Frank Thomas destroying buffet tables). Things should be looking up for the team Hazel used to cover – but they aren’t. The Blue Jays are in the midst of a 1-5 road trip with the likelihood of finishing 2-7 or 1-8 if Roy Halladay doesn’t get it done tonight against Jon Lester.

The talk of the town over the weekend was that Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi (forever to be known on this page as “The Chickenhawk”) would have left Manager John Gibbons’ (aka Boomhauer) “ace” in Kansas City had the Jays been swept. The Jays won the final game of the series, but the feeling is that this team is “too good on paper” to be playing this poorly and a change is needed – guess getting rid of an over the hill DH who was hitting .167 wasn’t enough of a change.

For once, Blue Jays fans are right about the situation their team is in – they need a change, a major one, one much more meaningful that simply getting rid of a manager that (depending on what you hear) the players may or may not like. A sweep, or even a series loss, in Boston could very well result in Boomhauer being relieved of his duties with the standard sound bite from the Chickenhawk –

“it’s a competitive business, and its tough to keep up with teams like Boston and New York with those payrolls. Gibby did a good job, but we’ve got to do something to shake this team up and start playing like we can. It’s not Gibby’s fault though.”

Yes, it isn’t – as a matter of fact the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the Chickenhawk – the chief architect and builder of the perennial also-rans. Ricciardi’s bad decisions on free-agent signings have netted the Jays’s fans a big fat zero and Ted Rogers’ chequebook a whole lot of red ink. The Jays are a team without a defined identity – they are a patchwork of underachieving veterans like: Wells, Burnett, Rolen, and Stewart, past their prime (if they had one) guys like Zaun and Stairs who are taking up valuable playing time from younger players who could have some upside, and decent players who are overvalued and overpaid by the Chickenhawk, see Ryan, Overbay and Ecsktein. Sure he signed Rios and Hill to extended deals – which should be good ones – but for every deal like that, there is a Frank Thomas, an AJ Burnett, a BJ Ryan, a Rod Barajas, a David Eckstein – pieces to the puzzle that never quite fit.

It seems like Chickenhawk’s goal is to field a competitive team – which has meant finishing third and pointing to the big boys and their big payrolls. The original plan was to gut the Jays and build a winner – mission one accomplished, mission two – impossible. His track record would suggest that the Jays are doomed to have an average team; one that may tease for a month or two, but in the end, never really be a threat. Maybe its time the Jays take a good hard look at their GM and realize that it isn’t going to work out, not now, not ever. The Jays, being the classy organization they are, could thank the Chickenhawk for his services by dropping him off in his native New England…right after they get swept by Boston.

TUESDAY THREE PLAY
A split yesterday, thanks to a sub-par performance by Habs G Carey Price; oh well, back at it again with a few more suggestions:

New York over Pittsburgh (hockey) – this has been a home team series this year, and it should stay that way with the Rangers playing for their playoff lives. Lay $100 on the Rangers - $145.

New York over Pittsburgh (baseball) – Santana over Snell was one of yesterday’s picks, I’ll keep the pick. Lay $100 on the Mets - $170.

Los Angeles over Oakland – you have to think the Angels will get back on track after getting pounded last night by the A’s. Lay $100 on the Angels - $135.

The future is bright

With the second leg of UEFA's Champions League semi-final set to go today in Manchester - I'd be remiss if I forgot to mention that for the second straight year, Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Professional Footballers' Association's Player of the Year award, as voted by players in England. Pretty heady stuff for a kid that is only 23 years old and still a few years away from being at the top of his game.

In terms of dominating his sport - he is right up there, if not above, the likes of Sidney Crosby, LeBron James, and Tom Brady.

Just what is "tampering"?

Leaf Nation is still trying to make sense of things in the wake of Brian Burke’s announcement that he would fulfill the final year of his contract with the Anaheim Ducks and forego any existing or potential opportunities for employment with other clubs around the NHL.

A number of theories are flying around about Burke’s decision – or “about-face” as viewed by some – to remain with Anaheim and not even entertain an offer that was rumoured to be coming from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The latest theory has the NHL intervening to put an end to any discussion or negotiation regarding the issue and potential ripple effect of Burke leaving his current job (in which a valid contract is in place)_ to sign a more lucrative contract with the NHL’s flagship franchise – that’s right THE flagship franchise of the NHL.

The NHL was quick to deny the allegation, with the NHL’s Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly simply stating (via email) that

“Both clubs and employees have a right to rely on contracts, That matter is between the club and the employee -- it's not an issue for the league."

Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment Limited’s President/CEO (and chief architect of the Leafs demise into the abyss) Richard Peddie reaffirmed that the league did not intervene in the matter. Peddie went on to shoot down the notion that the organization would be paying anything near the $5M/year rumoured to be on the table for Burke;; Peddie stated that the MLSEL had not yet interviewed any candidates and that their salary offer to a new GM would be commensurate with what most GMs are currently earning - $1M annually.

In typical MLSEL fashion, they are downplaying (denying) that they had put together, or were even considering, a lucrative offer to convince Burke to leave California to come right the ship in Toronto – was it the worst kept secret in Toronto? Or was it an outright fabrication on the part of the media? Unfortunately it is a tough call as neither side is trustworthy – as with most things of this nature, the truth lies somewhere in between and Leaf Nation gets screwed again. To add insult to injury – as if missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons wasn’t injury enough – it is being said that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is quietly championing the cause of Colin Campbell to be the Leafs next GM.

With the organization finally seeing the need for a proven GM with a winning background – Gary Freaking Bettman wants someone to give Colin Campbell a chance to succeed as a GM. Thanks Gary, but no thanks – if you want to get rid of Campbell as the league’s disciplinarian, then do it yourself; don’t give him what amounts to golden handshake by dropping him off at our doorstep like an abandoned baby.

So no Brian Burke – it goes without saying that those donkeys that run the show at the ACC will likely hold on to see if San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson comes available, or maybe Doug Risebrough in Minnesota. As bad as that sounds, it is definitely a better option that hiring the likes of Colin Campbell or super agent Don Meehan. It is hard to believe that former Stars GM Doug Armstrong would still be interested in the job with this calamity known as MLSEL.

Forget Harold and Kumar – Toronto has Dick and Gordon Kirke searching for their own White Castle.

So with the 2008 Entry Draft six weeks away – the geniuses at MLSEL have not yet interviewed anyone.

Hands up, those of you looking forward to the 08/09 season? Ugh

Montreal over Philadelphia – anyone who has followed these two over the years knows that the away team normally does very well. The Habs are still smarting from the Flyers “narging” of them (check out Carbonneau’s comments after game two). Lay $100 on the Habs + $115.
