Same Old SenaTards

The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals last night with a 1-0 win over the SenaTards on a late goal by Samuel Pahlsson - the checking line did it again last night, they shut down the Tards number one line and they forced the turnover that lead to the game winner. The Tards were never really in the game and were it not for Ray Emery in the first period, they would have been down by two or three goals.

The Ducks took the game to the Tards all night, but fell victim to some poor finishing, along with Emery's goaltending. Still though, they got the goal that counted and that is all that matters. Speaking of Pahlsson's goal, all three members of the Tards top line should be held responsible for the game winning goal:

• from Dany Heatley turning over the puck at the blueline with an ill-advised attempt at a pass to Spezza;
  
  
• to Spezza not trying to get back in the play - watching it as he slowly skated back into his own end;
  
  
• to Daniel (Krusty the Klown) Alfredsson who skated back but then stopped for some reason and watched Pahlsson score the winner - Krusty has been applauded for his physical (read: hits from behind) play during the playoffs...Pahlsson had his eye on Krusty, which would explain why Krusty didn't try to hit him.

The Tards will hide behind the excuse they did after game one - "we didn't play our game". Leaf Nation knows better than to buy that tired old excuse, the Tards DID play their game, a game Leaf Nation (and SenaTards) have become all too familiar with. The Tards started out tenatively to say the least and the Ducks came out flying. The Tards reverted to their old style of playoff hockey, the "play not to lose" style that saw them turn over pucks because they were not willing to take a hit to make a play; the Tards looked lost, like they didn't know what do to once they crossed the blue line.

Their number one line tried a few half hearted attempts to carry the puck over the line, but didn't find things to their liking with Pronger and Niedermeyer teaming up to pound them or take the puck from them - from there, they resorted to dumping the puck in, but didn't seem to interested in really working and being physical to win the puck battles.

Game two was pretty much a repeat of the first game with the Ducks out shooting, out hitting, out working, and creating more scoring chances than the Tards - one more thing, the Tards failed to score on a 5-3 power play opportunity. A very telling stat (if you like that stuff) was that the Tards generated two scoring chances during a stretch that last 37 minutes from the beginning of the second period to late in the third.

On Tuesday, I posted a quoted by Jason Spezza about adversity being the Tards greatest strength (whatever that means), well considering the Tards had not lost the first game in any of their previous three rounds, I'm not sure what adversity he is referring to - unless he is talking about all the pressure heaped on the Tards at the beginning of the season (yeah, pressure). We'll hear about how they want to get back in their own building "to play their game" - they'll talk about how much their fans love them, blah blah blah. They aren't engaging - unless they are adopting the Buffalo "Ruff at home" and "Lindy on the road" style. They might get their fans all excited by winning game three, but Leaf Nation (and Hazel) knows that this is the same old SenaTards - they aren't going to get it done, they're just as likely to lose in four...but at least they have their stock excuses, they've been doing it for years. Next week - we'll talk about the all-time Tards excuse "every hockey team has to lose before they can win, they have to learn from losing and get better".

Tough night last night for both the Red Sox and the Jays - hopefully, Hazel had an eye on the hockey game. At Fenway, Dice K was roughed up for six runs on twevle hits in 5.2 innings; and at the Rogers Centre, the legend of "Rojo" is no more, as the Yankees knocked rookie Jesse Litsch around five runs in 0.2 innings. There's always room on the Red Sox West bandwagon.


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Anaheim C Samuel Pahlsson scored the game winner against the Tards, that is normally enough to get one of Hazel's stars - but for shutting down Spezza and company for the second straight game, he should get all three today.

Red Sox West P Derek Lowe pitched seven strong innings yesterday, shutting the Nationals out on three hits and two walks while striking out five.

Florida Marlins 2B Dan Uggla hit two home runs and drove in four to lead the Marlins to a 9-0 pasting of the Chicago Cubs.


THURSDAY THREE PLAY
Finally, a 3-0 night last night, your balance sheet would look a lot better if you played them - + $385 for the week. Today's suggestions:

Cincinnati over Houston - Arroyo got shelled in his last outing, we like him to pitch better today in Texas. Lay $100 on the Reds - $130.

Los Angeles Angels over Baltimore - we'll go with former Blue Jays P Kelvim Escobar to get it done over the O's. Lay $100 on the Angels - $215.

Chicago over Toronto - Halladay's back, but its been a long layoff, hunch pick her. Lay $100 on the Sox + $145.

Game two of the Stanley Cup Final goes tonight in Anaheim with both teams trying to say the right things. The Ducks are going with the canned responses "We're sure we'll see a much better Senators team on Wednesday" - the Tards are sticking to the old "We have to get back to playing our game" - GM John Muckler went so far as to say "We stunk". Then, there are guys like Tards C Jason Spezza who try to think out of the box, who try to be quotable, but end up showing that they were born to play hockey. When asked about his thoughts for Game 2, Spezza replied "Adversity has been our strength all year." HUH? Good try Jason...

We fully expect the Ducks to win tonight using the same formula they used on Monday night to beat the Tards. The Ducks should come out even faster and harder tonight, knowing that taking a commanding 2-0 lead against a team that, for all their talk, still has some lingering demons to deal with due to past playoff disappointments. While Ottawa claims they didn't have their A-game on Monday night - neither did Anaheim, Dustin Penner and Corey Perry weren't really factors in the game, expect that to change tonight; also, expect the Ducks to tone it down just a bit tonight...they won't be giving the Tards 7 PP opportunities.


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Detroit Tigers DH Gary Sheffield had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs to lead the Tigers to a 14-2 win over Tampa Bay. How good would he have looked in a Red Sox uniform...say, instead of J.D. Drew?

New York Mets 1B Carlos Delgado hit two home runs, including a walk off shot in the 12th, and drove in three runs to lead the Mets to a 5-4 win over the Giants. Hazel's old pal is starting to get into a groove.

Boston Red Sox P Josh Beckett returned from the DL last night and shut the Cleveland Indians down - limiting their high-octane offence to two runs on three hits and a walk over seven innings; Beckett finished the night with seven Ks. Its going to be great seeing him go up against the Yankees on Sunday night.


WEDNESDAY THREE PLAY
Another 2-1 night with a minimal gain - thanks for nothing New York Yankees. Two day total stands at + $85, we'll bust out with a great night soon enough.

San Diego over Pittsburgh - we'll go with Chris Young today, while we were happy to see Pittsburgh beat the Padres yesterday, we just don't see it happening again. Lay $100 on the Padres - $135.

Los Angeles over Washington - former Red Sox P Derek Lowe takes the mound tonight in Washington, while he has had a hard time on the road, we like him to get it done tonight. Lay $100 on Red Sox West - $150.

Oakland over Texas - Dan Haren goes for the A's tonight - with any run support, this guy would be getting Cy Young consideration (and I'm not just saying that cuz he's a Maeple Leaf). Lay $100 on the A's - $215.

Tards Shootin' Blanks

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Don't ever believe the hype - or most of what you read (except this page of course). We're coming to you from the great province of Nova Scotia (where membership in Red Sox Nation is HUGE) - but I digress. We're in Halifax tonight after spending last night incommunicado in a small hotel in a town that isn't even worth mentioning - sometimes travelling for work sucks. Anyway, the hotel claimed it had wireless internet access - I say "claimed" because when I got there, NOTHING. I went to the front desk where the desk person (is that what you call them?) is chatting away on MSN and looking at another page. When I asked about connection - she just looked at me and says "It should be working." Nothing...so she says, she'll call someone, but it isn't likely that she'll be able to get the tech guy to the Inn because its after 7 pm. Gee thanks. So after driving 200 + miles back to Halifax we have internet. All wasn't lost last night - they did have cable TV so I enjoyed a few Guinness and watched the hockey game.

Ah Game 1 of the Cup Finals - the Tards went into the game saying they felt good and that the layoff wouldn't hurt them. The media and fans were coming up with clever catch lines like "Duck Hunting" "Duck Hunting Season" "Roasting Duck" etc...you get the idea.

The Tards started out just fine - they came out and drew an early penalty against Scott Niedermeyer - actually, it was a pretty weak call; but the Tards took advantage and got lucky on a puck that J-S Giguere misplayed. I could almost hear the Tards in Ottawa screaming. The Tards continued to take it to the Ducks for a few minutes until a game changing hit.

The national media credited the fourth line with getting the Ducks going, Brad May and Todd Marchant were singled out for a great shift against the Tards. But in my humble opinion, the hit that changed the game happened a couple of minutes earlier. With the Ducks trailing 1-0, Sami Pahlsson dumped the puck into the Tards end, forcing Wade Redden to retreat to try and move the puck out. Redden was absolutely crunched by Ducks checking C Rob Niedermeyer and gave up the puck along the boards which lead to a scoring chance for Pahlsson. The Ducks didn't score, but they seemed to be energized by that hit and started to take the play to the Tards.

The Tards had a chance to go up 2-0 with a 5-3 advantage for almost 1:30 - but their power play let them down and you could almost see the wind come out of their sails. The momentum had shifted to the Ducks - they continued to dump the puck in and smash the Tards D; by mid-way through the second, you could see the Tards start to pull up a bit to avoid getting smashed into the boards.

The Tards did manage to take a 2-1 lead with another power play goal - but the looked like the same old Tards that Leaf Nation has come to know and loathe. The Tards were playing like they expected something to go wrong - the media chalked it up to the Tards "being rusty" "not playing their game" and "didn't have game shape legs" - Leaf Nation knows better. The Tards, for as much as their fans think they are tough, still fold when things get physical. The number one line of Spezza, Heatley and Alfredsson were invisible at even strength - call it the Pronger factor.

Tards fans can say what they want about how their team didn't play their game - but isn't that what the opposition is supposed to do...taking you out of playing your game? The Ducks used their size to intimidate the Tards, their speed to create scoring chances, and their heart (19 Canadians) to will themselves back into the game and win it.

Almost as good as Nova Scotia lobster.

We're guessing that if Hazel wasn't watching Game 1 (Leaf Nation will let her off for that sacreligious act) she was pretty happy about the events in MLB. The Sox and Jays (we think she still likes them) both won - to make things even sweeter, the Jays got a great performance from Dustin McGowan to beat the Yankees. Sox and Jays win, Yankees lose (to one of them) - doesn't get much better for Hazel we think...oh wait, Tards lost. Perfect night in the world of sports.


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
As good as things were in the MLB - if Hazel is still a member of Leaf Nation, she'd understand why we are nominating three Anaheim Ducks today.

Center Ryan Getzlaf scored the game tying goal and could have had two more by a matter of inches - he also imposed himself on the Tards defence; he hit them, he took them off the puck, and went around/through them when he had to.

Centre Rob Niedermeyer had the momentum changing hit in the first period, and made a great play along to boards to slip a check by Mezaros and get the puck out to Travis Moen for the game winner. Oh yeah, did we mention his line shut down Spezza, Heatley and Krusty?

Winger Travis Moen he scored the game winner to bring Leaf Nation (and Ducks fans I guess) to their feet. Moen threw his body around all night.


TUESDAY THREE PLAY
We were 2-1 last night - unfortunately, the balance sheet shows a minimal gain; + $45. Tonight's suggestions

LA Dodgers over Washington - Brad Penny goes for Red Sox West tonight, and we really like him against Cardinals' cast-off Jason Simontacchi. Lay $100 on the good guys - $165.

Boston over Cleveland - a little scary to go with Beckett after the layoff, but he'll get run support as the Sox knock Jeremy Sowers around. Lay $100 on the Sox - $200.

NY Yankees over Toronto - yes the Yankees stink, but so do the Jays (ignore the little streak they are on) - we'll take Pettitte over Marcum. Lay $100 on the Yankees - $160.

Stanley Cup Monday - We're Breakin It Down

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The Stanley Cup starts up tonight in Anaheim with the Ducks hosting the Ottawa SenaTards. We haven't picked the Tards yet in the playoffs and we aren't about to start now - this time though, we are not going to wind up with (Ducks) egg on our face. The Tards have been the prime beneficiaries of some very good fortune so far in this year's playoffs - we aren't saying that is the only reason they are in the finals...but it has been one of the primary reasons. All three of the Tards Eastern Conference opponents had issues heading into their series with the Tards; some of it their own fault, others outside their control:

The Penguins went into their series with Sidney Crosby trying to play with a broken foot;
The Devils' Martin Brodeur was playing (arguably) his worst hockey of the season - he was, without a question, THE goat in two of the four Tards wins;
The Buffalo Sabres' power play was anemic during the playoffs - a "bad" power play would have been enough to get them an extra win or two against the Tards and maybe win the series.
Every hockey fan knows that in order to win a Stanley Cup, a team has to be good and lucky - but this year's edition of the Tards have gotten more of the latter. Well, it all ends with the drop of the puck tonight - the Tards are going down...and going down hard. We like the Ducks in most facets of the game - we are calling for the Ducks to win this one in six (likely five) and here's why:

Goaltending
Tards goalie Ray Emery has been good when called upon, but that hasn't been very often during the playoffs. Emery has proven that his rebound control is suspect, and there is always the likelihood that he could snap with the slightest provocation (crease crashing - which the Ducks are known for). While Emery has played well, he hasn't proven that he could steal a game or two for his team - before Tards' fans think "He hasn't had to", you go with that...but you know its true.

On the other hand, Ducks G J.S. Giguere has been outstanding during the playoffs, he is showing the form that got the Ducks into the Finals a few years ago. His positioning is almost perfect, his rebound control has been better than any other goalie in this year's playoffs, and he doesn't let the occasional bad goal mess up his game. Giguere was the main reason the Ducks got past the Red Wings - the team wasn't at its best (you'd think they were playing Phoenix for chryss sakes) but Giguere held his team in and gave them a chance to win.

Goaltending may be a saw-off - but we'll give Giguere a slight edge.

Defence
The Tards defence is solid but unspectacular. They rely on their defence to minimize chances against and any offence is really a bonus. The Tards' D was able to push smaller teams like the Sabres and the Devils around - it won't be nearly as easy against the Ducks who possess both size and speed. Pushing Daniel Briere and Scott Gomez off the puck is one thing - trying to push Dustin Penner and Ryan Getzlaf off the puck is another. The Tards defence is soft - Redden, Corvo, and Preissing aren't very physical; not good if you are playing the Ducks.

The Ducks will rely heavily on Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermeyer - one will push you off the puck, the other will pick your pocket and start the transition game in a heart beat. The Tards big line will likely be seeing a lot of Pronger on the ice - which isn't good news for cream puffs like Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. Throw in a steady defenceman like Sean O'Donnell and Francois Beauchemin who has raised his game a notch (and then some) in Anaheim and you have a pretty damn good D.

Edge goes to the Ducks because Pronger and Niedermeyer combine for 60 minutes of ice time - the Tards will find themselves up against one or the other...pick your poison.

Forwards
The Tards like to claim they have everyone contributing - that all four lines can score - don't buy it. The Tards have relied heavily on their number one line of Spezza, Heatley and Krusty the Klown (Alfredsson) - they have gotten a few goals from the supporting cast. The Tards can look forward to being matched up against Pronger - as I mentioned earlier, not good news for the Tards. Spezza and Heatley can be bullied right out of the game - two of the softer guys in the league (don't be fooled by the scraggily beard and the dude with the missing tooth).

Anaheim has missed Chris Kunitz on their number one line with Teemu Selanne and Andy MacDonald - but the number two line of Dustin Penner, Cory Penner and Ryan Getzlaf have the potential to dominate a soft Tards defence with their size. The Ducks stick to rolling three lines - due to coach Randy Carlisle's obsession with line matching - so the fourth line gets sent out to bring some energy. The Ducks will benefit from the long layoff before the Cup Finals - so they won't be able to use the excuse of being tired.

Special Teams
Edge goes to the Tards - but it all goes out the window during the Finals. The Ducks have been one of the most penalized teams this year (the playoffs have been no different) - but we expect the refs to allow a bit more to go in this final, meaning the Tards won't get six or seven PP opportunities per game.

It all adds up to a Ducks win - the team with 19 Canadian born players wins the Cup. I know my boy Johnny will be emailing me today to say he disagrees with my assessment - but what does he know? He's a stinkin Habs fan.


MLB SUNDAY
A good and bad day in the majors yesteday.

The Good - Red Sox West win when Juan Pierre gets hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 11th - he hasn't done much this year, so we'll take it. Not to be one of those fantasy baseball geeks - but the win spoiled a great outing for Rich Hill (of the Maeple Leafs in the yahoo pool). Still though, we'll take the win and move on.

The Bad - We like the Sox here, really we do; we couldn't hate the Sox on a page called "Thoughts of Hazel Mae" - but with the best record in the majors, you would think they could have let yesterday's game against the Rangers go; especially since our favourite porkchop Mark Texeira had a great game. We won't complain...but, damn, we wanted to give Texeira one of Hazel's Stars. The silver lining was that Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia (who we are pretty sure is a porkchop) hit a home run, that wound up being the difference, against Eric Gagne (added bonus, my pal Renee has Gagne in the yahoo pool).


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard had three hits, including two home runs, and four runs batted in to lead the Phillies to a 13-6 win over the Braves.

Minnesota 1B Justin Morneau is proving that last year's MVP award was no fluke. Morneau hit his 15th home run yesterday and drove in three runs in the Twins 4-2 win over the Blue Jays - one of the few times we pick the Jays on the Three Play and we end up paying for it.

San Diego P Jake Peavy dominated the Brewers yesterday, pitching seven shutout innings and limiting the Brew Crew to two hits and a walk - while striking out eight. What were we thinking when we suggested backing Suppan yesterday? Sorry.


MONDAY THREE PLAY
We had our worst week in a long long time - apologies. We've always responded with a good week after a bad one. This week should be no different. We start the week at + $390 for the year (it was a really bad week).

Anaheim over Ottawa - for all the reasons I listed above...Lay $100 on the Ducks - $140.

Milwaukee over Atlanta - its risky to bet on a team that is coming off a long road trip...but the Brewers will be happy to be home after their trip out west...plus we like Capuano. Lay $100 on the Brewers - $130.

Minnesota over Chicago - We'll go with Santana over Contreras today. Lay $75 on the Twins - $190.

We'll try to get back before tonight's action for a couple more suggestions. Have a great one peeps!

Canada's Team - The Ducks

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

So the Stanley Cup gets underway in Anaheim tomorrow with Canada's team hosting the Ottawa SenaTards - that's right, the Anaheim Ducks are Canada's team. For the past week the fans and media in Ottawa have been whining about why hockey fans across the country have not jumped on the Tards bandwagon - like they did for Calgary and Edmonton during their Cup runs.

One of the likely reasons the Tards haven't garnered more support in Canada is the lack of hockey-chick website - Canadian hockey fans fondly remember the great "flamesgirls.com" site that was all anyone was talking about two years ago. Don't kid yourselves, hockey fans up here new that the further the Flames went in the playoffs - the less the Flames girls would be wearing on the Red Mile. Nice.

The primary reason for the lack of support for the Tards is that there is still the perception that they are a "Euro-first" team - while that was true during the earlier incarnations of the Tards - it doesn't really apply to this team; they have twelve Canadians on the team. It has been hard for them to shake the tag of a bunch of Euros - not that we're complaining...we can't stand them. While the Tards are somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of number of Canadians on the team - the Ducks are right up at the top of the list, featuring nineteen Canadian born players on their roster...for that reason alone, they get the distinction/honour of being called Canada's team.

We'll be back later to break it all down - we're going with the Ducks to win the big one.


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Boston Red Sox LF Manny Ramirez had four hits, including a triple, and drove in a run in Boston's 7-4 win over Texas - a trip for Manny automatically gets him one of Hazel's stars.

New York Mets 1B Carlos Delgado had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five as the Mets beat up on the Marlins by a score of 7-2. Hazel's old pal is having a tough season, but its nice to see one of baseball's good guys have a night like that.

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Lyle Overbay had three hits, including a home run, and drove in five (including the winner in the 13th) in the Jays 9-8 win over the Twins.


SUNDAY THREE PLAY
Another tough night last night - not been our week; the total sits at - $405 for the week.

Today's suggested plays

San Francisco over Colorado - we are going to try the Giants one last time, they've killed us this weekend, but we can't see them getting swept. Lay $100 on the Giants - $160.

St. Louis over Washington - we like Adam Wainwright (yikes) over Matt Chico. Lay $100 on the Cards - $175.

Toronto over Minnesota - we'll go with the enigma that is A.J. Burnett over the Twins and Carlos Silva. Lay $100 on the Jays - $115.

Milwaukee over San Diego - a hunch pick, Peavy is due for a loss so try to make some cash off it (I chose not to use the term "jack" - think about it). Lay $100 on the Brewers + $170.

Saturday Three Play

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

A quick post today - all about the three play. We were going to do the Stanley Cup breakdown and accompanying prediction (think I'm picking against the SenaTards? Damn right, and you'll find out why tomorrow). Busy day here today...so we are just posting the three play picks.

One quick question though - does anyone find it strange that Rick Tocchett plead guilty to charges of "promoting gambling and conspiracy to promote gambling" and will likely not get jail time for it? The other two men charged (one being a state trooper) are definitely going to get jail time...and Tocchett skates away free (pun intended). Anyone else wondering if, some how some way, the NHL was involved in getting this swept under the rug to avoid any further mention of Janet Jones (and Wayne Gretzky)? Things that make you go hmmmm - I'm thinking the NHL, with the limited credibility and pull they have in the US, might have gotten involved in this one. I could help but remark at the arrogance of Tocchett's lawyer, Kevin Marino, in summing up the plea - "I'm sure everyone recalls the manner in which the case was initially announced and described...I think the proceedings speaks for itself."

Meaning what? The fact he gets away with no jail time somehow absolves him of committing this crime? What an assinine way to speak of the proceedings...if there was any justice, Tocchett would be serving jail time along with his co-conspirators. Before you ask, I'm not a Tocchett hater - quite the contrary, he was one of the only Philadelphia Flyers I ever liked; but if that was you or me, our asses would be in jail.

Don't Bet On NHL Coming To Canada

Thank you Jim Balsillie! For those of you wondering who Jim Balsillie is and why we are thanking him - Big Jim is the co-CEO of Research in Motion (the makers of the blackberry) and we are thanking him because his agreement in principle to buy the Nashville Predators has given us (me) a brief reprieve from listening to more crap about the Ottawa SenaTards Stanley Cup aspirations.

The topic of the day on sports talk radio up here was about what Balsillie would do with the Nashville Predators IF the NHL Board of Governors approved the purchase. While most fans up here are insisting that the team will be moved to Kitchener-Waterloo, because it isn't financially viable in Nashville, you have to keep in mind that the coverage I was listening to came from the land of the SenaTard.

The call would start with a SenaTard talking about how the logical choice was to move the team to Canada - to an area half-way between Toronto and Detroit, and a short drive to Buffalo - the sentiment is understandable. But as is usually the case with 95% of SenaTards, the second part of their argument/reasoning/comment would turn to how a team in Kitchener-Waterloo would erode the fan base of the Toronto Maple Leafs - that is what life is like in the land of the Tards...they are obsessed with the Maple Leafs.

These morons didn't bother to read the newspaper articles or listen to the entire tv/radio report - there are so many things to be considered, that Balsillie can't pull an "Irsay" and just move a team overnight. For Canadian hockey fans reading the page (I answered all your damn emails - lets see if you come back after the Cup final) the Nashville Predators are not, I repeat are NOT, coming to Canada - certainly not to Southern Ontario...for a variety of reasons, not the least of which are:

• the arena lease deal with the city of Nashville includes a clause that if they attract an average of 14,000 per game, they have to stay there or pay a stiff penalty for breaking the lease;
  
  
• the NHL has never considered moving to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, so they aren't going to let Jim Balsillie move his toy to his home town because he thinks the region can/will support a team. The NHL is trying to build a product that can sell in the US (they are failing miserably), American viewers are not going to tune in to see a team based in Kitchener...they didn't go for it what Balsillie tried to buy the Penguins, they are not going to go for it now;
  
  
• Territorial issues - the Buffalo Sabres aren't going to be too happy to see a professional hockey team in their backyard and you can bet they will be vocal opponents of any move to Kitchener, the Red Wings would likely balk...but of course, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be pointed to as the bad guys. Don't buy it, the threat that a team in Kitchener would pose would be minimal - Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment wouldn't be threatened by Balsillie. There is also a number of American owners in the Western Conference that would much rather travel to Kansas City than cross the border into Kitchener.
  
  
• What about Winnipeg that has been lobbying the NHL hard to bring a team back there - they have made a very convincing business case to the NHL about how they could be financially viable - the NHL said "Thanks, now go away."
  

Big dollars mean big markets...Kitchener doesn't match up with Kansas in terms of fan base and being ready to welcome an NHL team (KC has an arena ready for the first team that wants to move there). The NHL has Balsillie by the balls - they know he is dying to own a hockey team...so they'll tell him where he can operate it. So to all you SenaTards and Canadian hockey fans who haven't been paying attention - we don't run the NHL anymore, we don't even have much of a say in how it is run...nobody in the offices of the NHL cares that we think a team would work in Kitchener...its a moot point.

I knew this would happen - for those of you who checked in early this week and saw a picture of Miss Canada wearing a tailored Leafs Jersey - the SenaTards faithful has been loud and critical of her choice of jersey. Not surprising...I told you they were retards.


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Atlanta Braves P John Smoltz pitched seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the Mets. Smoltz gave up seven hits, walked none and struck out five to pick up his 200th career win. Smoltz became the first pitcher to record 200 wins and 150 saves. Smoltz has been a pleasant surprise for the Maeple Leafs in the yahoo pool.

Toronto Blue Jays RF Alex Rios came off the bench to score the tying run and hit the winner in a 5-4 extra innings win over the Orioles yesterday - another pleasant surprise for the Maeple Leafs in the yahoo pool.

Detroit Tigers SS Carlos Guillen hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the Tigers 12-0 win over the Angels...not a member of the Maeple Leafs, but good for the Three Play.


FRIDAY THREE PLAY
A good night last night, going 3-1 and lowering our total for the week down to - $35.

Boston over Texas - after dropping 2 of 3 to the Yankees, the Red Sox are going to make someone pay, might as well be the Rangers. Lay $100 on the Sox - $180.

Detroit Tigers OF Magglio Ordonez hit two solo HRs in an 8-7 win over the Angels - one of the big reasons the Maeple Leafs are in first place in the yahoo pool.

Washington Nationals LF Ryan Church also had two HRs and drove in six runs to power the Nats to an 12-7 win over the Reds...so much for our suggested play on the Reds last night.

Red Sox West P Brad Penny shutout the Brewers over seven innings yesterday to lead the Dodgers to a 5-1 win; Penny gave up six hits and two walks while striking out four.

We have to add a fourth today...or my girl "B" will be all over me.

A.C. Milan Striker Filippo Inzaghi scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Champions League final in Athens yesterday.


THURSDAY THREE PLAY
Another night where we split the picks and wind up in the red - this time $130 as both our big favourites lost - we hate the state of Ohio now. Our total for the week stands at an ugly - $195.

Last night I told you about the SenaTards whining about how Canadian hockey fans haven't shown them the love and gotten behind them. For the last time SenaTards - the Maple Leafs are Canada's hockey team. Heck, even Miss Canada chose a Leafs jersey when asked to done a "traditional" outfit from her home country at the Miss Universe pageant - ladies and gents...meet Inga Skaya. Just another example of why being a member of Leaf Nation rocks.

We're really pressed for time today - so a quick post this morning.

The Ducks finally got it done last night, beating the Wings by a 4-3 count to win the series in six games (didn't we tell you?). The Ducks looked to be in control after two periods, taking a 4-1 lead into the third, but a few brain farts on their part allowed the Wings back into the game...the Wings had a chance to tie it up with a power play late in the period, but J.S. Giguere came up big for the boys in black. So its the Ducks and Tards - finally; series starts next Monday thanks to NBC (which can't upset the Ducks too much). You know who we are picking...we'll tell you why in the next couple of days.

Of note in the majors - good news for both Red Sox

Boston got a three-run HR from Manny Ramirez in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 7-3 win over Mike Mussina and the Yankees. The Sox got a decent outing from starter Julian Tavarez who pitched 5.2 innings for the win.

Red Sox West, in the midst of a four game losing streak, got a solid outing from lefty Randy Wolf and a two-run HR from Canadian boy Russell Martin en route to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers...Dodgers fans say "FINALLY".

Anaheim Ducks G J.S. Giguere made 26 saves yesterday, including four huge saves in the final period when the Wings were coming in waves to preserve the Ducks lead and pick up the win.

Red Sox West P Randy Wolf pitched seven solid innings for the good guys yesterday, limiting the Brewers to two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four.

Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau had two HRs and five RBI to power the Twins to a 7-1 win in Texas last night. Honourable mention goes to P Johan Santana who struck out 13 over seven innings.

TUESDAY THREE PLAY
Tough night last night - going 2-2 but winding up - $65 for the night...no biggie; we'll get back on track tonight.

For those of you who haven't been here before, The Hazies take a look back at the week that was in the world of sports and single out some of the outstanding performances. The lucky few are awarded a Hazie and have the title of "Hazel's Hero" bestowed upon them - which is better than any recognition they may have gotten elsewhere. While Hazel hasn't officially approved this week's winners, we would like to think that she'd give her trademark smile and thumbs up to our picks.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE CHAMPS MLB
Boston Red Sox P Daisuke Matsuzaka was named the American League Player of the Week. Matsuzaka pitched his first complete game at Fenway last week against the Tigers; Dice K posted two wins with an ERA of 2.12 and eleven strikeouts in seventeen innings of work. Roger who?

Houston Astros OF Hunter Pence and Arizona Diamondbacks closer Jose Valverde were named co-winners of the National League Player of the Week. Pence finished a great week hitting .591 with two HRs, five RBI, with a slugging percentage of 1.091. Valverde pitched four scoreless innings on his way to recording four saves last week - bad news for Red Sox West who are in the midst of a pretty nasty tailspin.

Red Sox West SS Rafael Furcal deserves a Hazie for a three game stretch last week in which he had four hits in each game - Furcal who started the season on the DL has recovered nicely from a slow start; he finished the week hitting .500.

New York Mets 3B David Wright had his first good week of the season - hitting .409 with four HR and ten RBI. I'm sure Red Sox Nation would be down with this selection considering who the Mets played last weekend.

New York Yankess RP Kyle Farnsworth makes the cut this week - not for anything he did on the field, but for what he did off it. Farnsworth was rather outspoken in a radio interview last week where he had the stones to call out the Yankees and Roger Clemens for the deal that was signed. I'm sure you have all heard what Farnsworth said...so we won't re-hash it; but I'm giving him credit for having the guts to say what many of his current and former teammates have though to themselves.


NHL
Anaheim Ducks G Jean-Sebastien Giguere is the main reason the Ducks went into tonight's game against Detroit up 3-2 and in position to close out the series. Giguere has been unbelieveable in this series as evidenced by the game he had on Sunday against. Anaheim had no business winning that game - but Giguere kept his team in the game and gave them a chance to win. I heard a stat that he was 12-1 in his last 13 overtime games...that qualifies him as a Champ in my books.

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
Chelsea Striker Didier Drogba scored with five minutes left in extra-time to give Jose Mourinho and the Blues a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup final played at Wembley Stadium. While we were happy to see Mourinho pick up some hardware - it was tough seeing Cristiano Ronaldo missing out on two trophies this season.

SPECIAL ADDITIONS
I've got to give special mention to two guys - not for sports related accomplishments...but for being damn good men.

My man Ottawa_Tilt came up big for me. My tickets to see the Sox vs Yankees at Fenway in June came in - these are once in a lifetime tickets that cost more than I expected to pay...but hey, they were for a milestone birthday so what the hell. Well, Tilt postponed a trip to Spain to go down to Fenway with me when I told him two other donkeys I expected to come down crapped out on me. Tilt always has my back...and for that he's a damn champ!

For those of you who have read the page for a while, you have undoubtedly seen reference to a Hazelspeeps Poolie who goes by the name of "Hubie" (the Fantasy Baseball Pool's resident Steinbrenner) - when Hubie found out that I scored tickets; he told me that he would take care of my accomodations...Hubie came up huge for Tilt and I and got a an unbelievable deal on a three night hotel stay. Hubie, if you are checking in...Tilt and I have your bill on Sunday when we go down to Fenway...drinks before and after the game for you my man.


HAZEL'S ZEROES - THE CHUMPS

For those of you wondering how I could loathe the SenaTards with every fibre of my being, I give you this to consider. Fresh off a series win against the Sabres, the SenaTards fans and management, along with the Ottawa media, decided to focus on the absence of love they are feeling from Canadian hockey fans. Yes, instead of focusing on the Holy Grail of Hockey - these clowns instead choose to use the time to whine and beg for support as "Canada's lone remaining hockey team." Man-up you bunch of whiners...get over it. You'd have to experience this nonsense to truly understand my disgust with this bunch of retards...Anaheim in five.

NBC "Analyst" Brett Hull expert analysis after Detroit's loss to Anaheim last Sunday amounted to "don't worry...you'll be fine, you'll win games six and seven and it will be ok". Hull trashed the Ducks and basically dismissed them in the series - Hull must have went to the Jeremy Roenick school of analysis. Hull must have forgotten that every team that wins a Cup gets at least one win like that - but why would he? He has never played a significant role on any of the Cup winning teams he's been on.

NFL
We could go into a long and extensive list with these jokers - so we'll just post the links if you don't know why they made the list.

Brett Favre - go in peace, but for God's sakes just go.
A.J. Nicholson - obviously he didn't get the memo from Bengals management about "players of good moral character".

We've been in shutdown mode for a couple of days - if you have read the page before, you know what that means.

For those of you who think I've been hiding because of the Tards win over Buffalo - I took my lumps Saturday afternoon and evening from members of the Tards Army; yes, I watched the game with them. The Tards did something I didn't think anyone could pull off - winning three games in Buffalo - does that mean they are a team of destiny? I don't think so; as well as the SenTards played, you could just as easily point to how bad the Sabres were:

• Maxim Afinogenov had another forgettable playoff - he had a rep of being a guy who is an all-star at home and a no-show on the road, he was a non-factor for most of the Sabres ill-fated playoff run. Its time for Buffalo to cut this guy loose.
  
  
• Thomas Vanek is another guy who played big during the regular season - but found himself being benched all too often during this year's playoffs.
  
  
• Daniel Briere, the Sabres captain and so-called inspirational leader was invisible for most of the series, he couldn't even manage to make things work on the power play...he spent too much time diving instead of driving.
  
  
• Brian Campbell looked lost in his own zone, so did Jaroslav Spacek and Dmitri Kalinin. The only Sabres defenceman who managed to play well with Henrik Tallinder - you aren't going to beat anyone when five of the six defencemen you throw out there are making bad decisions and giving the puck away.

The Buffalo Sabres have now become the Ottawa SenaTards - blowing their load during the regular season and not being able to get it done in the playoffs. There is so much more to write about how disappointing the Sabres were...but what would the point be?

As for tonight's game, you know how we feel about the Wings here - counterfeit is a word that we use to describe them. We picked Anaheim to win the series, and we still believe that will happen; still though, the thought of Dominik Hasek beating the SenaTards to win the Cup would be the ultimate irony huh? What a crushing blow that would be to the Tards...to have the goalie they cut loose come back and beat them for the big prize. Oh well, we believe the Ducks have everything it takes to beat the Tards later this week - they are big, physical, fast and have a goalie who is playing his best hockey of the season right now...just ask the Wings.

Cincinnati Reds 1B Scott Hatteberg had three hits, including a HR, and drove in four runs to lead the Reds all the way back from an early six run deficit - the Reds won the game 8-7 on a pinch hit HR by Javier Valentin in the eighth.

Game 5 of the Eastern Conference goes this afternoon in Buffalo (thanks for nothing NBC) with the Sabres hosting the Tards - we've had to endure three days of "we're going to the Cup" talk from the "Tards Army", I can't even begin to describe how painful that is.

I was going to do a "Hinterland Who's Who" of hockey fans...featuring the SenaTard, but I'm too damn tired after playing poker well into the wee hours of this morning. By the way, if you are wondering about "Hinterland Who's Who" reference...google it...Hazel would get the reference.

The talk has been around how the Tards are going to win the series today - the Tards Army will give you all sorts of reasons why the series won't make it back to Ottawa for game six - they point to all sorts of "signs" that the Tards are a team of destiny. When dealing with a SenaTard, it is important to remember that most of these idiots are former Montreal Canadiens fans who jumped ship in the late 90's and early 2000's when the Habs were terrible and the Tards were on the rise - I'm sure readers from New England know how obnoxious Habs fans can be - as I said, keeping that in mind, I just listened to their arguments about how "they" would beat the Sabres IN BUFFALO today. The funny thing is that it only takes two words to shut these morons' pie holes - "How much"?

The question is greeted with a confused look on the face of the blowhard you have been cursed with having to listen to - invariably, the vacant look comes over their face when they respond with a "What?" The question is more focused and right to the point - "How much do you want to bet on Saturday's game? You think the Tards will win...how much?"

The look that every member of Leaf Nation has seen on the face of the Tards - fear. The Tard, backed into a corner with having to back up his conviction, resorts to the last out "You don't like the Sabres...you're team didn't make the playoffs, so why should I bet you?" End of conversation - you can almost see the Tard twitching, fighting the urge to ask the question that would expose him as a former Montreal Canadien fan...the Habs fan, when confronted with the current state of their team always resorts to one of two questions (depending on who they are talking to)

1) When was that last time your team won the Cup? or

2) How many Cups has your team won?

And you wonder what I call these retards "SenaTards"? I'm calling it right now...Buffalo is going to win today, and Monday and Wednesday. The Tards are going down - and with the loss will wear the tag of "Chokers" like its an immunity idol on Survivor.

Poker night last night - my man Ottawa_Tilt took the game down and with it, a nice payday. Luckily, Tilt and I have the kind of friendship where we share the benefits of windfalls...so Tilt's got dinner in Boston when we go see the Yankees and Sox at Fenway...that's right, yours truly scored BIG TIME tickets to Fenway for the game on June 3rd. We'll have the pictures up when we get back.

New York Mets OF Endy Chavez hit a two run home run off Andy Pettitte to give the Mets a 3-2 win yesterday - Endy, Red Sox Nation salutes you.

San Diego Padres P Chris Young allowed one run on six hits and a walk over six innings in an 8-1 win over the Mariners yesterday - Young finished the night with five strikeouts. Good for the three play.

Minnesota Twins P Boof Bonser pitched seven solid innings against the Brewers yesterday, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out nine in the Twins 8-1 win over Milwaukee.


SATURDAY THREE PLAY
Another tough night going 2-1 but only $45 in the black. So the total for the week stands at - $340 (accounting error earlier this week).

Boston over Atlanta - Dice-K vs Lerew...need I say more? Lay $100 on the Sox - $240.

Milwaukee over Minnesota - Dave Bush has been getting plenty of run support this year, expect the Brewers to rebound from yesterday's beatdown. Lay $100 on the Brewers - $165.

Florida over Tampa Bay - Jae Seo is going to the DRays...so expect the Marlins to put up some numbers today. We'll go with Dontrelle Willis. Lay $100 on the Marlins - $120.

Buffalo over Ottawa - read above. Lay $150 on the Sabres - $125.

The Ananheim Ducks evened the Western Conference Final at two games apiece with a 5-3 win over the Red Wings last night. The Ducks, who were without all world defencemen Chris Pronger, were lucky to get out of the first period with a 3-1 lead - they were outplayed by Detroit and had it not been for J.S. Giguere, it could have been the Wings up after the first period. The second period also belonged to the Red Wings as they had seven power play opportunities - cashing in on two of them. Anaheim got their game together in the third period - getting a third period power play goal from Ryan Getzlaf and an empty netter from Rob Niedermeyer.

Its going to be an interesting weekend in the NHL - to be discussed tomorrow.

The Red Sox get a good performance from Julian Tavarez and a gutsy/grinding performance from Curt Schilling to sweep a day/night doubleheader with the Tigers - who in the hell do these guys think they are...the Dodgers?


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Anaheim Ducks C Ryan Getzlaf really stepped up last night for the Ducks - Getzlaf had been called out by Ducks GM Brian Burke as one of the guys who had to be more consistent and needed to step things up in Pronger's absence. The kid responded with the winning goal.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays RF Delmon Young hit two home runs, including a walk off two run shot in the 10th, and drove in five in Tampa's 8-6 victory over the Texas Rangers - spoiling a good game from our boy Mark Texeira.

Milwaukee Brewers OF Gabe Gross (a former Toronto Blue Jays prospect) had two home runs to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Phillies.


FRIDAY THREE PLAY
It has been a tough week - we haven't had one of those in a while. We start the day - $415 for the week...we'll fix that this weekend.

Technical issues this morning so I’m asking Tilt to post this one for me.

If you were expecting to see a raving review of last night’s game at Scotiabank Place – forget it. We’re still not sold on the Sabres, we won’t get excited until they win Game 6 here next week – the Sabres broke out to a 3-0 last night and had to hang on for dear life (with a very shortened bench) for twenty plus minutes last night; they can thank Ryan Miller for stealing the win last night…they should have lost. But we aren’t going to get into specifics about last night’s game – we know when we’re being teased…hangin out with Renee will teach you some valuable life lessons that way.

Still though, forgive us if we start daydreaming about the ultimate collapse in this series and with it branding the SenaTards THE biggest playoff chokers in the last quarter century. You’d think Buffalo has to win at least ONE game at home (Saturday) – and if they managed to pull that off, the momentum would certainly carry over to a win in Game 6 back here at Scotiabank Place – AND if they did that, you’d have to think that they couldn’t possibly lose three home games in one series…right? But we aren’t going to get into that.

Red Sox West surprised everyone last night by managing to take two of three from the Cardinals – Wilson Betemit was the hero last nigh coming off the bench in the bottom of the fifth to pinch hitter for starter Randy Wolf and hitting a three-run shot to put the Dodgers ahead for good; ah the great thing about having the Majors’ best bullpen.


HAZEL’S THREE STARS
Buffalo Sabres G Ryan Miller frustrated the Tards all night, making 31 saves, (with at least six of them coming from point blank range in the slot) to lead the Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Tards last night. We’re not getting overly excited, but…

As mentioned, Red Sox West sometimes 3B Wilson Betemit came off the bench to hit a three-run homer in the Dodgers 5-4 victory over the Cards. Is that really enough to get one of Hazel’s Stars? It is if you are calling the shots – membership has its privileges.

Philadelphia Phillies P Cole Hamels pitched another great game last night against the NL leading Brewers (going into last night’s action) – giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out eleven over eight innings of work – he was perfect through six innings. A great addition to the Maeple Leafs – thank you Renee.


THURSDAY THREE PLAY
Yesterday was ugly – really ugly; but we haven’t had a bad day like that in a long time. We’ll figure out the totals tomorrow; we’ll worry about getting back on track today.

Milwaukee over Philadelphia – we’ll go with Ben Sheets to get it done today and prevent a sweep at the hands of the Phillies…plus, we’re not sold on Garcia. Lay $100 on the Brewers - $115.

Minnesota over Cleveland – we’ve given Fausto Carmona some respect this year…but its Johan Santana today. Lay $100 on the Twins - $130.

Boston over Detroit – Mike Maroth’s numbers against Boston are brutal…really ugly, so this one is more about Maroth’s problem over any faith we have in Julian Tavarez. Lay $100 on the Sox - $180.

The Good, Bad & Really Ugly

We're pressed for time today - so we'll just look at the good, the bad and the ugly from last night's action.

The Good - Red Sox West finally beat the damn Cardinals. Former Red Sox P Derek Lowe didn't bring his A-game to the park last night, but the Dodgers' offence bailed him out and got him the win. Lowe managed to pitch into the sixth but was pulled after getting one out - he finished the night giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks...not a great way to pick up a win, but we'll take it (so will Lowe).

The Bad - Red Sox P Tim Wakefield saw his string of great starts go down the tubes last night - the Detroit Tigers got to the knuckeballer last night for five runs on nine hits over seven innings in a 7-2 loss.

The Ugly - The Anaheim Ducks must have spent Monday night watching the Sabres because they played just like them last night - the Ducks came out pretty flat last night and Detroit took it to them. The killer for the Ducks was second goal scored with less than a minute left in the first period - you could tell that it wasn't going to be there night. Things went from bad to worse as they gave up two early goals in the second and it went downhill from there. The Ducks lost their minds after the fourth goal and completely got away from playing hockey - Chris Pronger laid a vicious hit on Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom, and will probably be suspended for it; even though the refs gave the penalty to Scott Niedermeyer...how about those NHL officials huh?


HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Red Sox West SS Rafael Furcal had four hits and drove in three runs last night in the Dodgers 9-7 win over St. Louis. It was the third consecutive game he had put up four hits - good enough to get kudos from Albert Pujols.

Toronto Blue Jays rookie P Jesse Litsch was called on to make a start for Roy "Doc" Halladay who underwent an apendectomy last week - the former Tampa Bay Devil Rays batboy nicknamed "Rojo" survived a shaky first inning, and came within one out of pitching a complete game in Toronto's 2-1 victory over Baltimore last night. I wonder how long it takes before Litsch is nicknamed "the intern" or "the resident".

Houston Astros LF Carlos Lee came up big last night - Lee hit two home runs, including a walk-off shot in the 10th, to lead the Astros to a 6-5 win over the Giants. Lee finished the night with four hits, four runs scored and two RBI.


WEDNESDAY THREE PLAY
A tough night last night going 2-1 and winding up + $30 on the night - the total for the week is still kind of ugly...but we'll fix that tonight.

Oakland over Kansas City - we're going with Joe Blanton over Odalis Perez tonight, can't see the Royals winning two of three in Oakland. Lay $100 on the A's - $200.

San Diego over Cincinnati - we'll go with Jake Peavy over Bronson Arroyo, not that we don't like Bronson...but Peavy has been almost unhittable lately. Lay $100 on the Padres - $170.

Baltimore over Toronto - call it a hunch pick or call it a "we're not sold on the enigma that is A.J. Burnett" - hard to think the Blue Jays could sweep anyone right now. Lay $75 on the O's + $145.

Arizona over Colorado - gotta take Brandon Webb when the price is reasonable - and it is tonight against Aaron Cook. Lay $75 on the D'Backs - $115.

Sabres Were Buffalo'd By The Tards

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The Buffalo Sabres are finding out that being President's Cup winners means absolutely nothing when the playoffs start. The Sabres lead the NHL in road wins and come from behind victories - both meant nothing last night against the SenaTards. If I had to pick one word to describe Buffalo's performance last night, it would be uninspired - the Sabres team that used team speed and sheer will to win battles with the opposition was nowhere to be found last night...they really were Lindy on the road.

Its not hard to pinpoint why Buffalo lost last night - what would proven infinitely more difficult would be to find any positives that they could take into Game 4 to spare themselves the embarassment of being swept by the Tards. The Sabres were out-skated, out-hit, out-worked and "out-everything".

The power play that was deadly during the regular season was unorganized and weak last night - Buffalo couldn't carry the puck in over the line and had to resort to dumping the puck in...the problem was that no one was chasing the puck (have we mentioned "Lindy on the road" enough lately?); the Sabres failed to register a shot on at least three of their power plays.

The Tards beat the Sabres to every single race for the puck - what I saw a lot of last night was a number of Buffalo Sabres pulling up on a race for the puck to avoid getting hit; I saw a lot of ill-advised blind passes that were a result of frustration at not being able to gain the Tards zone. There were so many bad things that the Sabres might as well mail it in on Wednesday - their performance last night was disgraceful; only the play of Ryan Miller saved them from a much worse fate.

Ducks and Wings go tonight in Anaheim and we're expecting the Ducks to steamroll the Detroit - we're looking for Anaheim to win the Stanley Cup this year.

Another good night for Dice K and the Red Sox - and a rather forgettable night for Red Sox West...why can't we beat the stinking Cardinals...why?

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Red Sox P Daisuke Matsuzaka went the distance last night, limiting the Tigers to a run on six hits while striking out five.

San Diego Padres P Greg Maddux pitched a complete game last night, allowing a run on five hits while striking out five.

Washington Nationals P Jason Bergmann came close to complete game - heck he has a no-hitter in the seventh; Bergmann pitched eight and a third innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out 10.


TUESDAY THREE PLAY
A tough night last night - the Braves were dominated and the A's lost by giving up two in the ninth - we start the week $255 in the red...we'll right the ship today.

Anaheim over Detroit - this one is a no-brainer; the Ducks should have won both games in Detroit. It is a case of being too big, too fast, too physical and just too much for Detroit. Lay $100 on the Ducks - $170.

Red Sox West over St. Louis - yes I know the Dodgers have all sorts of trouble with the Cards...but I'll go with Derek Lowe who has been great at home.

Oakland over Kansas City - We like Joe Kennedy tonight - A's lost a tough one yesterday, so expect them to respond. Lay $100 on the A's - $200.

Monday's Hazies - The Champs & Chumps

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

For those of you who haven't been here before, The Hazies take a look back at the week that was in the world of sports and single out some of the outstanding performances. The lucky few are awarded a Hazie and have the title of "Hazel's Hero" bestowed upon them - which is better than any recognition they may have gotten elsewhere. While Hazel hasn't officially approved this week's winners, we would like to think that she'd give her trademark smile and thumbs up to our picks.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE CHAMPS NHL The old saying goes - "You earn your paycheck during the regular season and you earn your reputation in the playoffs." One guy who is making a name for himself is Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks. The 21 year old center has been a force throughout the playoffs - while his numbers won't wow you - three goals and five assists in eleven games - you just have to watch how he dominates on the ice;

• the kid creates scoring chances where there doesn't seem to be any,
  
• he uses his 6'3" 213 body to impose himself on the opposition's defenceman and create turnovers and scoring chances for his team, and
  
• he rarely makes mistakes that lead to scoring chances for the opposition.

It is no wonder that Brian Burke balked when the Oilers asked for Getzlaf as part of the Chris Pronger trade - this kid is a champ in the making.


MLB
Two members of the Oakland A's shared Player of the Week honors this week - 1B Dan Johnson hit .545 with three home runs, six runs batted in and ten runs scored - those numbers combined with a slugging percentage of 1.091 and an on base percentage of .630 make him an obvious choice.

OF Jack Cust stole some of Johnson's thunder though - the kid who was a minor league champ and somewhat of a major league bust had a week to remember. Cust hit .348 for the week with five home runs and thirteen runs batted in - somewhere in Ottawa, my man Andrew is smiling and saying "I told you this guy could hit" - Jack Cust was Andrew's roto-league bitch for years...his prized prospect when he was with the Rockies, he never made it to Andrew's NL Roto Team - but hey, he's in the show now.

Cincinnati Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. was named the National League Player of the Week - Jr. hit .400 for the week with three home runs and nine runs batter in; to round out his exceptional week, Griffey posted a slugging percentage of .760 and an on base percentage of .484 - luckily his big week didn't kill Red Sox West. The highlight of Griffey's week was passing Rafael Palmeiro on the all-time home run list.

Speaking of Red Sox West - Brad Penny is off to an Josh Beckett-like start for the Dodgers. Penny was 2-0 last week with an earned run average of 0.68 and eighteen strikeouts. In case you are wondering - YES, Penny is a member of the Maeple Leafs...thanks to a trade with my girl Renee; thank you Renee!

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz came out swinging last week - not so much with his bat, but with his words. Ortiz lambasted members of the media for misrepresenting statements he made about steroid use - and he called out everyone in the media. Gotta love that guy - he takes on any and all comers.


EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
There are many ways to measure a man's greatness (pardon the pun...you'll see why) - a German company tried to immortalize German Internationals Michael Ballack and Oliver Kahn and it cost them big. German sex toy manufacturer "Beate Uhse" lost a judgement in a lawsuit brought forth by Ballack and Kahn, it seems the manufacturer produced a couple of vibrators and named them after the German stars. Ballack and Kahn didn't comment on the case - but I am reminded of a sports story from a book by Sparky Lyle "The Bronx Zoo". Lyle recounted a story about one of the first female reporters who entered the Yankees locker room - there was a special event (a birthday party I think) and the Yankees had ordered a cake in the shape of a penis. The reporter asked former Yankees 3B Craig Nettles if the cake was his idea - Nettles responded by saying "No I just posed for it".


HAZEL'S ZEREOS - THE CHUMPS

NHL
Ottawa SenaTards Captain Daniel Alfredsson (aka to Leaf Nation as Krusty the Klown) had been lauded for the game he has brought to this year's playoffs - especially the physical aspect. Canadian announcers, especially guys like Pierre McGuire, are gushing about how Alfredsson is imposing himself this year - one problem, he continues to register his biggest and most devastating hits from behind. Last Saturday night in Buffalo was a prime example of how Alfredsson has been physical force - he planted Sabres D Henrik Tallinder into the boards face first with a hit from behind - I've counted at least four this year that should have been penalties. Leaf Nation is used to Alfredsson's act - we've seen this from him before...just ask Darcy Tucker.

MLB
Boston Red Sox P Curt Schilling got himself into another controversy last week calling out Barry Bonds and making accusations about how Bonds conducts his business off the field. We talked about it last week - so no need to elaborate on why Schilling is on the list this week.

We gave J.P. Ricciardi the business last week - this week its Manager John Gibbons turn. Gibbons has never struck us as the brightest star in the sky...and he really illustrated that yesterday. Gibbons was questioned after yesterday's Devil Rays/Jays game for a decision he made late in yesterday's game. Gibbons elected to lift C Jason Phillips to pinch hit light hitting SS John MacDonald (who was in a 1 for 25 slump) - when asked after the game why he chose MacDonald over Phillips or even Alex Rios who was on the bench (he is one of the Jays top run producers), Gibbons answered "I have my reasons". When asked to share his reasons, Gibbons replied "I don't have to tell you everything." and walked away. J.P. swears John is a great manager...then again J.P. thinks he's a great GM. How would YOU like to be a Blue Jays fan?


NFL
Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre made news this week when it was revealed that he demanded a trade after expressing his displeasure with the Pack's management for not acquiring Oakland WR Randy Moss - Favre backpeddled on the issue saying that he never really wanted to be traded, but wanted to voice his displeasure. Maybe Favre should contact Schilling about setting up a 7throws.com site to issue an apology to Green Bay's fans. Favre tried to explain by saying that he wants to win now - he isn't interested in Green Bay's long-term plan to get back to being a contender "I won't be here in five years" - this won't come as a surprise to anyone that has read this page during NFL season - our response to Brett is "yes, you won't be there in five years...so take a hint and retire.
