Sunday Afternoon Three Play

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "New Year's Eve Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

We are doing ok as of 2:30 pm with two looking like winners (New England and K.C) and one not looking so good.

Your afternoon/evening suggested plays:

Indianapolis -9.5 over Miami - lay $50 on the Colts, they'll blow the Dolphins out in this one

Chicago -3 over Green Bay - Favre's last game won't be a memorable on. Lay $100 on the Bears

Detroit over LA Kings - Lay $50 on the Wings - $350.

Carolina over Philadelphia - the Flyers won their game for the month, Canes' lay a beating on them tonight. Lay $75 on Carolina - $290.

Happy New Year Gang...talk to you in 2007.

Hazel, best wishes for a safe and happy new year, filled with joy, prosperity, good health and love.

Song of the Afternoon on Hazelspeeps - with tongue firmly planted in cheek...going back to The Clash

1-2 I Got A Crush On You - The Clash

Hazel - We Have A Problem

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Another miserable ending at the ACC last night - the Maple Leafs are blowing 3rd period leads like a cheap downtown corner hooker. The under-manned Leafs, who went into the game missing six regulars, played the SenaTards even up for most of the night and looked like they were going to steal a victory when recent call-up Boyd Devereaux scored late in the 3rd. Yet another defensive breakdown led to the game tying goal, and the Tards scored a bad one in O/T for the win. Hazel, you did your bit for the Red Sox in 2004 - its time to take a vacation and get yourself on up to Toronto to sprinkle the ACC with good Karma...Leaf Nation is on bended knee asking you to help the Buds out.

Things in the NFC became a lot more clear yesterday with the Giants sealing up a Wild Card berth with a win over the Washington Redskins. As they have done all season, the Giants built up a big lead and almost blew it. Three teams from the NFC East make it to the post-season...I'd like to say that it is the best division in the NFL - but that might be stretching it a bit.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Portuguese International Cristiano Ronaldo scores a double for the third consecutive game to lead Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Reading. Ronaldo has to be considered the best player on the planet as 2006 comes to a close. For those of you who are new to the page - we like to highlight great performances by Portuguese athletes.

New York Giants RB Tiki Barber carried the Giants into the playoffs with a 34-28 win over the Redskins last night. Barber rushed for 234 yards on 23 carries and had 3 TDs, including two long runs. Yeah, it saved us from a really tough night on the Three Play.

Nashville Predators G Chris Mason stopped 38 shots in a 5-0 win over the Bruins in the Music City last night. Yeah, we know Hazel probably wouldn't be down with highlighting a star who was responsible for a Bruins' loss...but hey, we call em like we see em.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY
Well, San Jose and the SenaTards have absolutely killed us this week - the Sharks should be harpooned after the performance they put on in Phoenix last night. Still though, we can overcome the deficit we are in going into Week 17. We are at - $88 for the week - time to get well this afternoon.

Kansas City -2.5 over Jacksonville - the Chiefs are champs at Arrowhead, the Jags are road wimps. We'll take Larry Johnson to end the season on a high note with a big game against the Jags. Lay $75 on the Chiefs.

Houston -5 over Cleveland - the Browns end another awful season on the road, there is no pressure on them. The Texans will look to finish the season on a high note with two straight home wins. Lay $75 on the Texans.

New England +3 over Tennessee - the Patriots won't roll over for the Titans in this game. Any time you get points with the Pats, you have to take them. Lay $50 on the Pats and say thank you.

That's about it for today gang - have a great one peeps!

HAZEL'S NEW YEAR'S EVE HOROSCOPE

You are better off taking flight and going somewhere where you can bring in the new year in a grandiose manner. Just get lost in the crowd. Your candor will enable you to make choices that will bring about a better year. 4 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world - Leaf Nation will pick up the tab for your flight home to help the Buds.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - yesterday morning, I listened to a radio program called the History of New Music with Alan Cross; The Clash's front man Joe Strummer was the artist in the spotlight. I completely forgot to mention that December 22 marked the fourth anniversary of Strummer's passing. Strummer is without a doubt one of the most important, if not THE MOST IMPORTANT, figure in the history of rock music. If you are a fan of alternative music - your favourite bands were likely influenced by Joe Strummer and The Clash (than includes one of Hazel's favourites, Pearl Jam). If you have never heard anything by The Clash - go listen to it; if you have, reacquaint yourself with the band that was once referred to as "The only band that mattered." The Clash broke all the rules in the music industry - too many to list, but think of this...they were the first, and only, band to reach a mass audience with a message of social justice and political reform. Rest in peace Joe.

So for the next week, our song of the day will be a song by the Clash. Today's song - their first single.

White Riot - The Clash

Week 17 Picks

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

We have to start today's entry by highlighting the fact that the Canadian Junior Hockey team now 3-0, after a 3-victory over Germany.

Week 17 of the NFL kicks off tonight, so its time to post the picks for the week (Ok, so I don't want to talk about the NHL last night). I'm out of the money in the Spreads Pool, so I'm going to take a few chances to win the week - I'm in the money in the Straight Up Pool, so I have to go by the book.

STRAIGHT UP

16) DALLAS over Detroit - Dallas puts the heat on the Eagles with a win over Detroit; they won't let up on Sunday.

15) NY JETS over Oakland - Oakland doesn't have an offence to speak of - Jets get it done at home.

14) INDIANAPOLIS over Miami - No way Manning loses this game - the Colts aren't as good as people once thought...but they aren't bad enough to lose to Saban's Sadsacks.

13) BALTIMORE over Buffalo - Losman and the Bills are in for a long day against the Ravens defence.

12) SAN DIEGO over Arizona - L.T. might run for a couple of TDs in the first half before taking a seat at halftime.

11) DENVER over San Francisco - Two teams who reversed the tide - Denver has gotten better under Cutler, the 49ers have reverted back into the bad team people thought they would be.

10) CINCINNATI over Pittsburgh - Revenge game for Palmer and the Bengals - the clock has struck 12 for the Steelers.

09) CHICAGO over Green Bay - Bears might be better under Griese if he gets in. Bears D uses this game as a tune up for the playoffs.

08) New England over TENNESSEE - I can't see Patriots rolling over in this one, they'll want to go into the playoffs on a winning note.

07) HOUSTON over Cleveland - Momentum from last week's win over the Colts carries over tomorrow against the Browns.

06) KANSAS CITY over Jacksonville - the Jags are road wimps, which doesn't bode well at Arrowhead.

05) Seattle over TAMPA BAY - the Seahawks need to pull it together, they can't afford to take this game off.

04) St. Louis over MINNESOTA - Rams have nothing to play for, which means Bulger should have a huge day in the Dome.

03) NY Giants over WASHINGTON - there is some pride left in New York...isn't there?

02) Carolina over NEW ORLEANS - Saints have nothing to play for, so they won't want to risk injury to anyone.

01) Atlanta over PHILADELPHIA - have I told you how much I hate the Eagles? This will be the kind of game that Ron Mexico surprises everyone...too little, too late for the Falcons though.

SPREADS POOL

16) KANSAS CITY -2.5 over Jacksonville - for our girl Hazel.

15) INDIANAPOLIS -8.5 over Miami - Colts will make Miami pay for their brain cramp in Houston last week.

14) CHICAGO -2.5 over GREEN BAY - the Bears will want to send Favre off with a good ol' fashioned wuppin'.

13) New England +2.5 over TENNESSEE - are the odds makers crazy? The Patriots still have something to play for.

12) Seattle +3.5 over TAMPA BAY - the Seahawks need a win going into the playoffs.

11) St. Louis -2.5 over MINNESOTA - this will feel like a home game to the Rams, Bulger likes it in the dome.

10) HOUSTON -3.5 over Cleveland - the beat the Colts last week, and last time I checked the Browns were nowhere near as good as the Colts.

09) NY Giants -2.5 over WASHINGTON - you have to think the Giants will get up for this one, against a one-time division rival...you'd think huh?

08) Carolina +2.5 over NEW ORLEANS - this will be the kind of game Delhomme steps up and looks like a decent QB - we hope.

07) DALLAS -12.5 over Detroit - we're hoping T.O doesn't drop four or five passes tomorrow.

06) Buffalo +9.5 over BALTIMORE - we like Bills D to keep this one close enough for a backdoor cover.

05) DENVER -10.5 over San Francisco - this could get ugly..."could" being the operative word.

04) CINCINNATI -6.5 over Pittsburgh - no Bengals player has been arrested this week; is that a good or bad thing for the team?

03) Arizona +13.5 over SAN DIEGO - I'm hoping for a backdoor cover.

02) Oakland +12.5 over NY JETS - the Jets don't blow anyone out...

01) Atlanta +7.5 over PHILADELPHIA - Ron Mexico is NOT a coach killer according to Jim Mora; we'll revisit this statement early in 2007. Jeezus Chryss Mexico...DO SOMETHING.

There you have it gang...wish me luck.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS

Florida Panthers G Ed Belfour made 31 saves to lead the Panthers to a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens - we like it when Montreal loses.

Calgary Flames RW Jarome Iginla had a goal and three assists in a 6-4 victory over the Kings - when this sniper gets three assists in a game, it is big news and deserving of one of Hazel's Stars.

New Jersey Devils C Scott Gomez had 2 goals and an assist to lead the Devils to a 4-3 win over Ovechkin and the Caps - oh yeah, it was good for the Three Play yesterday.

SATURDAY'S THREE PLAY
I should have kept my mouth shut with the NCAA game - we only play NHL, NFL and MLB here...but, I posted it, so I'll live with it. We were 2-2 yesterday, finishing the day $5 in the red - so our total for the week is - $13. We'll make it up today.

Toronto over Ottawa - this is a statement game for the Leafs, they have to win this one. Plus, we'd like to think that Hazel will be watching this game - Hazel Karma at the ACC! Lay $50 on the Maple Leafs even...trust in Hazel boys and girls.

Nashville over Boston - Hazel won't like this one, but remember, the Predators are lights out at home and I don't think the Bruins can keep up with the Preds. Lay $75 on Nashville - $200.

San Jose over Phoenix - the Sharks cost us big earlier this week, time for them to put us in the black by winning the rubber match of this home and home series. Lay $75 on San Jose - $200.

NY Giants -2 over Washington. Call it a hunch. Lay $50 on the Giants.

That's about it for this morning - check back often gang, my pal Renee will be checking in soon with her predictions for 2007...you know that is going to be well worth the read.

HAZEL'S SATURDAY HOROSCOPE

Travel plans or getting together with friends will help you make a decision that you will have to deal with in the new year. Don't let someone you don't see eye-to-eye with push you in a direction you really don't want to go. Fight for your rights. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world - have a safe and happy New Years Weekend. Remember, we need that good karma at the ACC tonight.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - because we are all about showing the love to our fellow porkchops...you may not know this, but our girl is half Portuguese (her mom is from the Islands).

Friday Night Three Play

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Logging on to post tonight's picks.

NY Rangers over Ottawa - The SenaTards have lost their top two centers; most teams would respond to this kind of adversity with a super human effort...not these guys though. The Tards have no heart, so you can count on them to drop this one. Lay $50 on the Rangers + $150.

New Jersey over Washington - Home ice advantage means the Devils can get the matchups they want to contain Ovechkin. Lay $50 on the Devils - $200.

Dallas over Nashville - the Predators are lights out at home; but aren't nearly as scary on the road. Lay $50 on Dallas - $120.

Good luck...have a great one peeps.

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Night on Hazelspeeps - just the mood I'm in this afternoon.

Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz

Peesth Out...Buh Bye!

A Time Of Giving

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

These days it seems that the only stories we hear about "Minor Hockey Parents" are negative - you know the stories:
  • an irate parent choking a coach to unconsciousness;
  • an angry parent confronting and then hitting a referree;
  • parents who berate kids on the ice;
Well, here story about minor hockey parents and minor hockey supporters stepping up to help kids out - in the land of the SenaTards no less. Every year between Christmas and New Years, Ottawa hosts the world's largest international minor hockey tournament - with over 5,000 kids from various age brackets competing.

A group of kids from Russia, the Moscow North Stars, made the trip to Ottawa last week only to find out that their equipment had been left on a tarmac in Europe. The call went out to minor hockey supporters and businesses through the region to chip and get enough equipment for these kids to play in the tournament. The community stepped up, with businesses donating jerseys and sticks, and parents of kids taking part in the tournament lending or donating hockey equipment. The Moscow North Stars took the ice yesterday and tied their first game (1-1).

A nice story about minor hockey - a story that likely won't get any coverage outside of Ottawa, but a good story nonetheless. We think Hazel would be down with that.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Philadelphia Flyers LW Simon Gagne had two goals last night in a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. The win ended Philadelphia's 10 game losing streak - that has a nice ring to it "Philadelphia's ten game losing streak". Honourable mention goes to Peter Forsberg who had three assists in the game - for the record, Gagne and Forsberg are the only Flyers we can stand here.

Buffalo Sabres' G Ryan Miller (also of Hazel's Maeple Leafs) stopped 29 shots in a 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes last night. Ryan helped salvage our three play last night.

Detroit Red Wings' Dan Clearly had three goals in a come from behind 7-4 win over Columbus last night. The Newfoundland born boy has flourished in Detroit (I'll never call it "Hockeytown") and has turned into a solid NHLer.

FRIDAY THREE PLAY
The Sharks killed us last night, wiping out the nest egg we had built up. On the bright side, we are still pretty much even for the week ( - $8); we'll get back on track tonight. We are going to take a flyer this afternoon while we ponder tonight's hockey picks.

Oregon State -3.5 over Missouri - I could try to dazzle you with reasons on why to take Oregon State...how about - because you need a reason to watch the game? Lay $50 on Oregon State.

That's about it for this morning - have a great one peeps!

HAZEL'S FRIDAY HOROSCOPE
Traveling about, visiting people and enjoying the end of the year should be your goal. You can expect to have some problems with the people who have criticized you the most throughout the year. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the day on Hazelspeeps - I picked up Our Lady Peace's Greatest Hits yesterday, along with The Fray's cd (on Renee's recommendation) - both great discs and highly recommended.

Good, Bad or Indifferent?

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae (who may or may not be in shock if she checked in to see Renee's 2006 recap).

So my pal Renee's Winners and Losers of 2006 was something else huh? Surprisingly, for all the knock down, drag 'em out, bitch slapping battles we had on hazelspeeps - I'm down with MOST of Renee's picks. Obviously, I would have found a way to get Hazel on the list - "Best Looking Celebrity" (after Commish Drisc's baby girl of course). I'm NOT AT ALL DOWN with nominating Angelina Jolie as one of the Ugliest Celebrities - no way, no how. Angelina is definitely in the Top 5 of the "To Do" list...without a doubt. But that's the beauty of my pal Renee - if nothing else, she is certainly provocative.

I don't know if being left off Renee's list is a good sign, a bad one, or just indifference - I guess I'll take comfort in the fact that I wasn't lumped in with Rosie O'Donnell.

If you have a problem with her choices - leave her a comment, or email her at renee_unplugged at yahoo.com. Don't be afraid to let her have it.

In hockey news the Canadian Junior National Team is now 2-0 at the World Juniors Championships in Sweden after a 6-3 win over the USA yesterday - we'd like to think that Hazel has her eye on our Jr. team and that she hasn't gone over to the dark side and become a U.S.A chanter.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Atlanta Thrashers' G Kari Lehtonen stymied Crosby and Malkin last night, making 35 saves in a 4-2 victory over the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Lehtonen kept Crosby off the score sheet and limited Malkin to one assist - a pretty damn good feat in Pittsburgh.

Dallas Stars' C Jeff Halpern had a goal and two assists in a 5-4, come from behind victory over the Avalanche last night in Colorado. Halpern stepped up to lead a Stars team that was without Mike Modano, Eric Lindros and Captain Brendan Morrow (who had wrist surgery and will be out of the lineup indefinitely).

Montreal Canadiens' G Cristobal Huet silenced Ovechkin and the Capitals yesterday, turning away 30 shots in a 4-1 victory in Washington last night. Enjoy the ride for now Habs fans - you'll be calling for his head in March when he reverts to form.

THURSDAY THREE PLAY
Tough night last night going 1-2 and winding up - $68. Our total for the week stands are + $107. We'll get back to our winning ways tonight.

Buffalo over Carolina - while Renee applauded the Canes in her blog entry last night - that was for their accomplishment last season, this season is a different story. I'm taking the Sabres to build on their big win over the Caps. Lay $50 on Buffalo - $200.

San Jose over Phoenix - things have gotten away from the Sharks lately, they haven't been playing great at home, but we think that the Coyotes are the perfect cure for what ails the Sharks. Lay $50 on San Jose - $330 (don't let the money line scare you).

We'll leave it at that for now...we may be back later with an additional pick.

That's it for this morning gang - have a great one peeps!

HAZEL'S THURSDAY HOROSCOPE

You may feel as if you've been pushed to the limit but now is not the time to let things get to you. Change is good. You thrive on it, so let the past go and prepare yourself for an adventure. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - because I can't get a feel for how Renee really feels about the year that was in 2006 (insert sarcastic laugh)

The Hazies - Champs & Chumps

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

For those of you who haven't been here before, Monday night entries (or Wednesday night this week) take a look back at the week or so that was in the world of sports, highlighting some of the more notable performances. To those who have risen above the rest, we award them with an honourary "Hazie" - the lucky few have the title of "Hazel's Hero" bestowed upon them. While Hazel hasn't officially approved this week's winners, we'd like to think she'd give her trademark smile and thumbs up to our selections.

HAZEL'S HEROES - THE CHAMPS

NHL
Boston Bruins G Tim Thomas was awarded the First Star of the Week for leading the Bruins to three wins, including wins over divisional rivals Montreal and the SenaTards. For the week Thomas posted a GAA of 1.33 and a save percentage of .959. I'm sure Hazel would be down with this one, she'll probably give Thomas props on next week's edition of The Buzz.

St. Louis Blues G Manny Legace was named the Second Star of the Week for leading the Blues to three straight victories under new coach Andy Murray. Legace posted a GAA of 1.69 and a save percentage of .930.

Tampa Bay Lightning C Vincent Lecavalier was named the Third Star of the Week. Lecavalier had six points in three games - Lecavalier has been one of Tampa Bay's lone bright spots this season.

Chicago Blackhawks LW Peter Bondra scored his 500th career goal last week. Bondra has never gotten the credit he deserves for being one of the league's best pure goal scorers - so it was good to see him get recognition for achieving a major milestone in the NHL.

NFL
St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson had a career day on Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Jackson ran for 150 yards on 33 carries, including a 21 yard TD in overtime, and caught six passes for 102 yards and a TD. Jackson's big day came too late to help out Hazel Mae's Cowboys though.

Tennessee Titans' QB Vince Young continues to surprise. Young led the upstart Titans to another upset win, this time over the Buffalo Bills. The rookie completed 13 of 20 passes for 183 yards and 2 TDs; he also rushed for 61 yards on 8 carries, including a highlight reel 36 yard run with time running out in the first half. Young is doing everything that Ron Mexico should be doing but isn't.

New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush ran for 126 yards on 20 carries, with 1 TD, to lead the Saints to a 30-7 pounding of the New York Giants.

Honourable mention goes to New England QB Tom Brady and Baltimore QB Steve McNair who lead their teams to big wins on the road.

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL

Portuguese International Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals for the second time in four days to lead Manchester United to a 3-1 victory over Wigan on Boxing Day - what made it all the more impressive was that he did it coming off the bench after halftime. Ronaldo now has 10 goals in 18 games and is one biggest threats in the Premiership - the future of Portuguese football...indeed!

HAZELSPEEPS FANTASY FOOTBALL POOL
We have to give it up to our man Bushey whose Ageswimmers pulled an upset victory over the heavily favoured Tina's Team in the Hazelspeeps Fantasy Football Pool final this past weekend. Bushey was pretty quiet all year long, but he stayed the course with his original team and won it all. Honourable mention goes to our rookie GM Tina who made a few key moves to get her team into the final - she's more of a baseball fan, but she held her own with the big boys in the football pool. Renee must be smiling over Tina's showing (stop laughing Renee...I didn't mean it THAT way).

HAZEL'S ZEROES - THE CHUMPS

NFL

While some fans look forward to the playoffs (or an outside chance at the NFC East title in the case of Dallas Cowboys fans) most are left to wonder what went wrong. We normally like to point the finger at players who cost their team the game - Ron Mexico is our favourite whipping boy - this week we are going to look at NFL coaches who should bear the brunt of criticism for their team's performances.

While it is often said that coaches can't get on the field to influence the game's outcome - they are responsible for making calls that influence the outcome of the game. As another NFL season comes to a close, a number of teams should be considering ushering in the new year by issuing pink slips to their three star generals - the coaches.

It goes without saying that the game has passed a few of the NFL's oldtimers by - I speak of Washington's Joe Gibbs, Oakland's Art Shell, and Arizona's Dennis Green. There is no justifiable reason why any of these three should be retained and allowed to guide their team into another dismal season. It may be a foregone conclusion in Green's case, while Shell and Gibbs may be able to get by...they shouldn't.

I submit the following names for your consideration and discussion.

Atlanta's Jim Mora. In a season that has seen a number of teams deciding to bench established veteran QB for untested/unproven first year starters (Dallas, Tennessee, Denver) - Mora has stood by a player who has consistently failed to get it done this year. Ron Mexico had another forgettable performance in a must-win game against a Carolina team that was starting a backup QB and was missing three starters on the offensive line. Mora's indecisiveness and stubborness has cost Atlanta time and time again this season - his insistence that his team's best chance to win rests with Vick at QB has gone from laughable to sad; the more he supports Vick, the more Vick fails to respond. It is time for Falcons' ownership to make Jim Mora Sr. look like a prophet when he said that he believed Vick was a coach killer.

Buffalo's Dick Jauron. The blame for Buffalo's loss to Tennesse last week rests squarely on Jauron's shoulders - bad decision making on his part cost his team the game. The Bills went into halftime on a down note trailing 20-19, after allowing Vince Young to run 36 yards for a touchdown in the dying seconds of the half. To their credit Buffalo came out and scored a TD in the third to retake the lead - with the Bills up by five Jauron decided to kick the extra point instead of going for two and extending the lead to a converted TD. I guess somehow Jauron thought that after giving up 20 first half points, his defence would hold the Titans to a field goal or less in the second half. To make matters worse in the dying seconds of the game, with Buffalo facing a fourth and five on the Tennessee 28 yard line - Jauron decides to go for it, rather than put the game in the hands of Ryan Lindell who had kicked five field goals to that point. The result was an interception and game over. Jauron's time as head coach of the Bears was marked by being too conservative and being a bad decision maker - things haven't changed in Buffalo...they won't win with him.

Cleveland's Romeo Crennell. Yes, he was a great defensive coordinator for the Patriots, but the fact of the matter is that the Browns aren't any better in the two years that he has been there - they are arguably as bad and further way from being in contention than they were before Crennell got there.

Giants' Tom Coughlan. The Giants came into the season thinking they had a shot at winning it all - a little bit of adversity was all it took for this team to come unravelled, and the blame rests with Coughlan. Major Tom's mitigation strategy to locker room problems was to begin calling his players out in the media. Coughlan threw gasoline on the fire by pointing the finger at his players during their second half dive - the Giants won't recover as long as he is there. As a Dallas fan, I want to quote the immortal words of former Toronto Maple Leafs RW Owen Nolan when interviewed after a game with the SenaTards, when told that the Tards were ravaged by the flu - "Boo Hoo".

A number of other coaches that should also get pink slips, but likely won't.

Indianapolis' Tony Dungy. We all like to point the finger and Peyton Manning and call him a choker, but the fact is that under Dungy (a defensive genius) the Colts defense has gotten progressively worse, to the point that any good running team can beat their asses. No excuses this year - Dungy should be canned.

Seattle's Mike Holmgren. The Seahawks blew their wad last year and it doesn't look like they are going to be able to get back to those heights. Holmgren has coached a number of very good teams with one Super Bowl to show for it - his failures far outweigh his success in terms of results. He's got to go.

Carolina's John Fox. His players love him, but the Panthers season has gone from leading contender to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl to being an afterthought and a joke. Carolina's offence is one dimensional and their defence has gone from being one of the league's best to being their achilles heel.

Detroit's GM Matt Millen. One look at the current state of the Lions is more than enough justification to fire this guy's ass.

That's about it for tonight gang - as always, if you think I have missed something, leave a comment or email me to let me know. Have a great one peeps.

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Night on Hazelspeeps - I'm in a mood tonight.

Hard to Explain - The Strokes

Peesth Out...Buh Bye

Bad Santa - Good Santa

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Ok, I think I'm over what was a bad Christmas weekend as far as sports go - Santa wasn't very good to the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Dallas Cowboys, or the to Portuguese National Team who learned yesterday that Luiz Felipe Scolari would step down from the Manager's post after Euro 2008 (we can officially start the call for Jose Mourinho to return to Portugal in 2008).

The Maple Leafs win over Minnesota last night was encouraging, especially given that they got goals from two unlikely sources (John Pohl and Alexander Steen; looking at Week 17 in the NFL was somewhat encouraging, with Dallas hosting Detroit and the Eagles hosting Ron Mexico's Atlanta Falcons (he won the last time he played there). OK, I'm grasping at straws with the hope that Vick could pull one out on Sunday.

The Canadian National Junior Hockey team opened the World Championships with a 2-0 victory over the host Swedes yesterday. Canada played well at both ends of the ice and continue a streak of not losing a round robin game in their last 17 games.

We are trying to stay in a positive frame of mind during the holidays.

We'll be back later to do this week's Hazies - the Champs & Chumps; topping the list of Champs is our man Bushey, who won the Hazelspeeps Fantasy Football pool with a shocking final win over our rookie GM Tina. They are both Champs.

HAZEL HOCKEY LEAGUE
The league is in shock as our resident Steinbrenner, Hubie, has not hit the waiver wire in a week. The standings remain relatively unchanged for the week ending December 25th - Merry Freakin' Christmas.

60.5 - Skating Bobcats - owned by Drisc, who is splitting his time between the pool and recruiting new teams for the 2007 Hazelspeeps Fantasy Baseball Pool.

49.0 - Weekend Warriors - owned by Chris, who has been relatively quiet this past week.

47.0 - Double DD Bandits
- owned by Hubie, who must have celebrated Christmas to the hilt to stay off the waiver wire.

39.5 - Hazel's Maeple Leafs - owned by El Presidente, who has grown comfortable with life on top of Renee.

34.0 - Ice Bitches - owned by Renee, who is planning to have a breakout year in 2007.

23.5 - Hanson Brothers - owned by Sparky, who had gone missing - we are going to rename him the Groundhog.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Columbus Blue Jackets LW David Vyborny assisted on the game tying goal and scored the overtime winner (his second goal of the game) in a 5-4 victory over the Boston Bruins. We're not sure Hazel would be down with this one - but we have no rule here against players who sink the B's.

Buffalo Sabres LW Chris Drury had two goals and two assists (all in the first period) to lead the Sabres to a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Canadian Junior G Carey Price stopped all 31 shots yesterday as Canada started off the tournament on the right foot with a 2-0 win over Sweden.

Honourable mention goes to Toronto Maple Leafs RW Jeff O'Neill who scored the game winning goal late in the third period at the ACC last night.

WEDNESDAY THREE PLAY
We had a great night going 3-0 last night to finish the night at + $175; enough to start paying down those Christmas Visa bills.

Calgary over Vancouver - I can't see Vancouver sweeping this home and home, the Flames get it done on the road tonight in Vancouver. Lay $50 on the Flames - $135.

NY Islanders over Ottawa -
the Islanders are coming off a shutout win over the Rangers last night...Ottawa isn't playing well enough to be laying money on these days; plus the price is right. Lay $50 on the Islanders + $160.

Detroit over Minnesota - the Wild have lost nine in a row on the road, and I don't see things getting better for them in Detroit tonight. Don't get caught betting on streaks ending - call it a lesson learned long ago with the Kansas City Royals. Lay $50 on Detroit - $250.

That's about it for this morning gang - have a great one peeps!

HAZEL'S WEDNESDAY HOROSCOPE

Don't let being hot-headed hold you back. This is the perfect day to fight the crowds and get out and do some sale shopping. A short trip to see someone who can make a difference to your future should bring about a financial gain. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - while Santa wasn't very good to yours truly, he came through big time for one of my friends who emailed me to say that her man surprised her this Christmas with an engagement ring - a big freakin' rock too! Boxing Day Three Play

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

We'll make it quick this afternoon - three plays, three winners. The total for the seven weeks is now + $1,100 - not bad for freebies huh?

Buffalo over Washington - the Sabres have had a tough time of late, they'll fix it tonight against the Caps. Lay $50 on the Sabres - $250.

Atlanta over Tampa Bay - the Thrashers have too much firepower for the Lightning, who have trouble keeping the puck out of their net. Lay $75 on the Thrashers - $150.

Nashville over St. Louis - a mismatch, which is reflected in the line. Lay $50 on the Predators - $330.

That's it folks...good luck if you play them.

Hazel, I hope your Boxing Day was groovy.

Song of the Afternoon on Hazelspeeps -

Good Time Tonight - INXS ft Jimmy Barnes

Christmas Hangover

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special Boxing Day "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Santa left me a lump of coal this year in terms of sports - the Maple Leafs are in a tailspin and are banged up - the Cowboys were terrible yesterday, and likely blew a chance to win the NFC East; ugh.

Boxing Day today (not sure if you folks in the US do the Boxing Day thing), so everyone will be out of their mind today, beating the crap out of each other to save a few bucks on stuff they really don't need...the post-Christmas spirit lives on.

We aren't doing the Three Stars today - do I have to explain? Back later tonight.

We'll post tonight's Three Play later this afternoon - I have to go fight the throngs at the mall today...give me strength. Have a great one peeps!

HAZEL'S BOXING DAY HOROSCOPE
Travel, getting out with friends or beginning a new project will all bring favorable results. You have done your best this year and helped everyone around you. Relax and let others take care of you for a change. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world and that your Christmas holiday was good.

A Very Merry Christmas to Hazel et al

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special Christmas Day "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Just logged on to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday - whichever holiday you celebrate. All the best to you and yours this holiday season.

No Three Play today (though we like the Cowboys and Dolphins).

HAZEL'S CHRISTMAS DAY HOROSCOPE
Talk to people in the know about investments, medical problems or legal matters. The information you receive will ease your stress and help you clear up any pending problems. A love relationship may suffer if you fail to show appreciation. 3 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world and that Santa was good to you. Here's hoping you are enjoying the holiday with family and good friends.

Christmas Isn't So Merry In Toronto

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special Christmas Eve "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

Bad night all around in the NHL last night - if you read the page, you know what I'm talking about. The news out of Toronto isn't good, the Maple Leafs have lost Michael Peca for 3-4 months with a knee injury, Alexei Ponikarovsky for 3-4 weeks with a shoulder injury, and Kyle Wellwood is day to day - Merry Freakin Christmas...grrrrrrrr

Week 16 in the NFL and the playoff picture should become much clearer after today - the game we'll be watching today is the Giants and Saints, as it has huge implications for the Cowboys. I never thought I'd say this, but GO GIANTS!!!!!

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson rushed for 135 yards on 35 carries and had a touchdown in a 20-9 victory over the Oakland Raiders last night - which was one of the bright spots on our Three Play. Hazel would be down with this pick.

Tampa Bay Lightning D (and a local boy) Dan Boyle had three goals and an assist in the 3rd period to lead the Lightning back from a 3-0 deficit to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers.

Manchester United winger (and Portuguese International) Cristiano Ronaldo had two goals yesterday to lead the Red Devils to a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. You know the rule about showing some love to the Porkchops.

SUNDAY THREE PLAY
We had a tough night last night going 2-2, but finishing the night $90 in the red - even with our two big picks winning. So we go into today at - $35 for the week, not what we were hoping for, but we'll have a good day today.

New England +3 over Jacksonville - I don't understand this line; I know the Pats aren't the Pats we have grown accustomed to seeing, but after Jacksonville's dismal performance last week in Tennessee they shouldn't even be favoured over NESN's touch football team (have you heard that Hazel has a rocket for an arm?). Lay $75 on the Pats with the points.

St. Louis -1.5 over Washington - I know its risky to bet on a game that features two bad teams, but I can't see why this line is so low. The Rams did ok last week against the Raiders - they should continue that today against a Redskins team that has played exactly one good game in the last month. Lay $50 on the Rams and give up the points.

Buffalo -4.5 over Tennessee - the Titans won last week with turnovers, I don't think they'll be that lucky this week as the Bills will put the game in the hands of Willis MaGahee. Vince Young can expect another tough day on the field against a Bills D that has been very good of late. Lay $50 on the Bills and give up the points.

That's it for today gang...back later with the 4 pm plays of the afternoon. Enjoy your Christmas Eve.

HAZEL'S CHRISTMAS EVE HOROSCOPE

Travel or getting together with relatives, friends or colleagues will turn out well today. You can pick up some information that will help you out in the new year. Don't put too much emphasis on how you and your partner are getting along today. 4 stars

Hazel, I hope you have a safe and joyous Christmas weekend with your family and friends.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - what else could it be?

Fairytale of New York - The Pogues (featuring Christy McColl)

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

Merry Christmas NHL

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The NHL is getting ready for the Christmas break with a full slate of games tonight. Leafs play the Caps tonight at the Hanger, and the Bruins welcome the Canadiens at the Garden - let's hope its a good Saturday night for Hazel...with wins for both of her hometown teams. The Leafs need one after dropping last night's game to the Blackhawks - we've always had trouble there.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS

Patrik Elias had a goal and an assist to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 4-1 win over the Capitals last night in Washington - more importantly, Elias performance was good for Hazel's Maeple Leafs in the yahoo pool, as well as our Three Play.

Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 pasting of the NY Islanders - again, a good result for the Three Play.

Toronto boy Anson Carter of the Columbus Blue Jackets had a goal and an assists in a 3-2 victory over his former team - the Vancouver Canucks.

SATURDAY THREE PLAY
Well, a 2-0 night put us back in the black - though its only + $55. Tonight's suggested plays:

Kansas City - 7 over Oakland - the Raiders had it handed to them last week by the Rams, who don't boast the firepower of the Chiefs. I don't know why everyone is picking the Raiders. Lay $75 on the Chiefs tonight - Hazel Karma for the boys in red.

Buffalo over St. Louis - the Blues finally won a home game the other night, they'll go back to their losing ways against the Sabres tonight. Lay $50 on the Sabres - $240.

Nashville over LA Kings - the Preds are great at home and should have no problem with the hapless Kings (who are bad everywhere). Lay $75 on the Preds - $285.

Anaheim over Phoenix - I don't think the Ducks let up in this one, they'll head into the break with a pounding of the Coyotes. Lay $50 on the Ducks - $240.

Four for the price of three gang...Merry freakin' Christmas gang! Have a great one peeps

HAZEL'S SATURDAY HOROSCOPE
Take the time to figure things out for yourself. A trip to old familiar places will turn out to be surprisingly good. Someone you like will do something special for you. 4 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world - enjoy your Christmas break, hopefully you are enjoying it with family and friends in T.O.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - just because, its an 80's hit...Hazel would be down with that.

Last Place At Christmas!

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The Tampa Bay Lightning limped in here last night, having played some pretty bad hockey, and stuck it to the SenaTards last night. The loss pretty much assures the SenaTards of being in last place in the Northeast Division - something they, nor their fans, thought fathomable at the beginning of the season. A couple of months back I said that I didn't think that the Tards were much more than a .500 hockey team - losing Chara, Havlat, Hasek and other bit pieces, had rendered them an average hockey team - I believe that more today than I did back then.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Dallas Stars G Marty Turco stopped 20 shots in a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Tampa Bay Lightning RW Martin St. Louis had a goal in a 4-2 victory over the Tards last night, but more importantly he was all over the ice and imposing himself physically - not bad for a little guy (ask Spezza).

Boston Bruins G Tim Thomas turned away 39 shots in a 2-0 shutout of the Vancouver Canucks. I'm sure Thomas will be getting some attention from Hazel on The Buzz.

FRIDAY THREE PLAY
We had a tough night last night going 0-3 and putting us at - $45 for the week - all I can say is that losing nights are rare here...sorry if you played them. We'll get back on track tonight.

Carolina over NY Islanders - the Canes have to pick it up soon, might as well start tonight. Lay $50 on the Carolina - $170.

New Jersey over Washington - expect Martin Brodeur to leave a lump of coal behind in Ovechkin's stocking. Lay $50 on the Devils - $130.

We may be back later to pick one more. Bonus pick - Lay $1,000 on Donald Trump to kick Rosie O'Donnell's fat ass in court. I had a laugh yesterday at Trump's comments on the bull dyke's big mouth - she's a caricature of herself...and Donald is gonna sue her ass good.

That's about it for this morning gang...have a great one peeps.

HAZEL'S FRIDAY HOROSCOPE
Don't take what everyone says too literally. You have to wade through the offers being made and the choices you are given. Something that interests you may be impossible to follow through with right now. Store the information for a later date. 2 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world - enjoy your weekend!

Things That Piss Me Off

Hey guys you've read my rants througout the past 2 months now here's the number one thing that pissed me off in 2006.

YOU FUCKING LOTTERY PLAYERS AT THE COUNTER
You know who you are. You're the old people and blue collar stiffs who hit the counter with either a folder of fucking 2,000 daily number bets that tie the counter guy/girl up through her next semester at school.

You always find something not right with a bet too. You frigging people suck shit!

The scratch ticket cocksuckers are just as bad. They hit for $50 or a $100. They look at the tickets for what seems like a 9 inning baseball game asking questions like:

What number are the tickets on?

Anyone hit on those ticket?

They stare at the damn things like its a life or death fucking decision. Then they pick a ticket. While the counter guy gets the new tickets the shithead scratches his newly bought tickets and of course hits again for $40 meaning another skullfest with the ticket rack.

The milk you purchased now expired an hour ago-your pregnant wife's newborn is in highschool. You make us late with your quest for greed. Rot in poverty you cuntbag shiteat eating lottery assholes who play the lottery like that!

How Does It Feel Curt?

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

The Boston Baseball Writers Association dinner will be held on January 11, 2007 - the BBWA will present a number of awards voted on by their membership. Red Sox P Jonathan Papelbon will be awarded Red Sox Rookie of the Year, Red Sox Pitcher of the Year, and Red Sox Fireman of the Year.

Fans of Curt Schilling should not feel slighted, the always charming and "engaging" veteran will be honoured as the Red Sox Comeback Player of the Year. I don't know if Schilling will be there to accept his award - remember, to accept this award would be admitting he had an off season in 2005 - but I wouldn't put it past him to show up and do part of his speech in Japanese. I'm reminded of a quote attributed to former Blue Jays' 3B Kelly Gruber, who like Schilling, was a publicity hound (Hazel would remember Gruber). I think it was 1B Willie Upshaw that said of Gruber - "That guy would attend a car-door opening if it got his face in the paper." Red Sox Nation, I'll let you decide if that applies to Schilling.

HAZEL'S THREE STARS
Detroit Red Wings' D Niklas Lidstrom had a goal and an assist in a 5-0 shutout win over the Blue Jackets - which was good for last night's Three Play.

Nashville Predators LW Paul Kariya had both goals in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night.

Anaheim Ducks RW Corey Perry also had two goals in a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars - again good for the Three Play.

THURSDAY THREE PLAY
We had another good night last night, going 2-0 and increasing the total for the week to $225. Tonight's picks

Green Bay -3.5 over Minnesota - see last night's explanation (both of them). Lay $50 on Green Bay.

San Jose over Dallas - the Stars dropped one last night in Anaheim; they shouldn't expect things to get any easier in San Jose. Lay $50 on San Jose - $210.

Ottawa over Tampa Bay - the SenaTards are feeling the heat from the media and their fans after a few bad performances...no one in Tampa cares about the Lightning. Lay $50 on the Tards - $220.

Good luck gang.

HAZEL'S THURSDAY HOROSCOPE
You may discover that someone misinterprets what you say. Prepare to make corrections and continue on as swiftly as possible. Money can be made but be sure you have everything in order before you make your move. 2 stars

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world and that you are getting ready for a very safe and happy Christmas weekend with your loved ones.

Song of the Day on Hazelspeeps - in case you missed it last night, I'm reposting Renee's request in its entirety.

I found a song that I wanted to dedicate to people who are supporting family and friends, or know of them, who are battling a terminal illness this holiday season. Its a tough time of year the holidays - enduring thistime...

The song is by Tim McGraw who was inspired by his father MLB pitching legend Tug McGraw who died of cancer.

LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYIN - Tim McGraw

He said I was in my early forties with a lot of life before me
When a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
I spent most of the next days lookin' at the x-rays
Talkin' about the options - talkin' about sweet time.
I asked him when it sank in
That this could really be the real end
Hows it hit ya when you get that kinda news?
Man what'd you do?

He said
(chorus)
I went sky divin'
I went Rocky Mountain Climbin'
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denyin'
He said someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dyin'....

He said I was finally the husband that most of the time I wasn't
I became the kind of friend a friend would like to have
And all of a sudden goin' fishin'
Wasn't such an imposition
And I went 3 times that year I lost my dad
Finally read the Good book
And took a good long hard look
At what I'd do if I could do it all again

(Chorus)
So I went sky divin'
I went Rocky Mountain Climbin'
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying.
He said someday I hope you get the chance
To Live Like you were dyin'

Like tomorrow was a gift
And you got eternity to think what did you do with it?
What would you do with it?
What did you do with it?

I went sky divin'
I went Rocky Mountain' climbin'
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I watched an eagle as it was flyin'
And he said I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dyin'.....

NFL Picks

Hey Peeps and anyone else checking in. A special "Hey" goes out to Hazel Mae.

A very special "Hey" goes out to my pal Renee, who checked in earlier tonight to make the call on the song of the night on Hazelspeeps (please have a look after you read this week's picks).

Time to post our picks for Week 16 in the NFL. Things went ok last week in the Straight Up pool - considering that Seattle and New Orleans' collective brain cramp represented a 54 point swing in my final total (Seattle 12, New Orleans 15). So instead of finishing the week at 122 - I finished at 68; but I widened the gap between me and the dude in second place (who had 50 points last week).

STRAIGHT UP POOL
16) Indianapolis over HOUSTON - this should be a no-brainer. The Colts won't let this game get away from them as the play to secure a Wild Card round bye. Houston were humiliated against the Pats last week - how are they going to stop Manning?

15) Kansas City over OAKLAND - welcome to Thoughts of Hazel Mae...have you heard of her? Did you know she is a big-time NFL fan? Seriously, the Chiefs are playing for their playoff lives here - expect a huge game from Larry Johnson after taking a back seat last week to L.T. I heard that Herman Williams addressed the Chiefs today - YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME, THAT'S ALL, WIN THE GAME, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME.

14) DALLAS over Philadelphia - A Dallas win secures the NFC East and gives them a good shot at a Wild Card round bye (see why later). Parcells will have his team ready for this divisional opponent - expect Dallas' offence to pose more of a threat than the Giants did last week...expect the D to reassert themselves against a one-dimensional offence. Look for T.O. to find his way on the field to spit in Garcia's eye.

13) Chicago over DETROIT - have you seen the Lions play lately? You, me, Hazel and a few of her friends from NESN could beat Jon Kitna, Roy Williams and the Lions. Chicago will look to erase doubts about their chances with a convincing win over the hapless Lions. In Week 11, Roy Williams said that the Lions would be spoilers the rest of the way...ah huh.

12) SAN FRANCISCO over Arizona - the 49ers put the game in the hands (and on the legs) of Frank Gore as they look to keep Leinhart, Fitzgerald and Boldin on the sidelines. San Francisco is playing for a chance at a playoff spot - the Cardinals are just playing. THE 49ERS ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE - YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND CROWN THEIR ASS IF YOU WANT TO.

11) BUFFALO over Tennessee - the Bills' D has been playing better of late, and Losman is managing them to wins; the Titans needed 3 defensive TDs to beat the Jags last week. Buffalo gets it done on Sunday.

10) ST. LOUIS over Washington - both teams had impressive wins last week, but the difference is that the Skins won't have the motivation of playing against one of the NFL's best in the Saints. Two teams going nowhere, so I'm going with the home team.

09) GREEN BAY over Minnesota - this may be Brett Favre's last primetime game, blah blah blah. Minnesota has benched Brad Johnson for a rookie - that should tell you a lot. Favre goes out on a high note.

08) ATLANTA over Carolina - you know how I feel about Ron Mexico, but I'm hoping he sits the bench this week. Atlanta takes advantage of a soft run defence to keep their playoff hopes alive...albeit on life support.

07) New England over JACKSONVILLE - the Jags are tough at home, the Pats are road warriors. David Garrard proved he can't be trusted - Tom Brady has proven that he can be trusted. The Patriots win this one with ball control and forcing Garrard into mistakes.

06) MIAMI over NY Jets - I'm taking Miami's defence over NY Jets pop-gun offence. Saban will take the game out of Happy Feet Harrington's hands and grind out a win by playing field position game.

05) NY GIANTS over New Orleans - its do or die for the Giants, so they'll probably come up with a big one - I see the Giants giving the Saints a heavy dose of Barber and Jacobs to keep Brees and Bush off the field.

04) PITTSBURGH over Baltimore - the Steelers are on a roll - may be too little, too late. Cowher will have his chumps pumped for a game against the division leading Ravens. Don't forget, McNair is a little banged up.

03) Cincinnati over DENVER - two teams coming off very different performances last week. I'll take Palmer to redeem himself this week in Denver. Too little, too late for our man Hubie and his Jack O' Laterns - but in time to keep the Bengals in the hunt.

02) SEATTLE over San Diego - call it a hunch, or a shot in the dark. Chargers have won eight in a row...they'll drop one before the season is over.

01) Tampa Bay over Cleveland - YUCK. Will anyone be watching this "dawg"?

NFL PICKS - AGAINST THE SPREAD
It's been a tough year against the spread in the pool - my winning percentage is decent, but my weighting of the picks has left a bit to be desired. At least I'm picking winners on the Three Play huh?

16) GREEN BAY - 3.5 over Minnesota - the Vikes are starting rookie Tavaris Jackson at Lambeau - bad idea. The Vikes can't defend against the long ball - not good against an old gun slinger like Favre. Green Bay wins big in Favre's last prime time game. Go in peace Brett...but for God's sakes go!

15) Kansas City -6.5 over OAKLAND - the Rams handed it to the Raiders by running Steven Jackson last week...how are the Raiders going to stop Larry Johnson? Yeah, yeah - Hazel likes the Chiefs too. Can you picture Hazel saying "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME".

14) Chicago - 4.5 over DETROIT - after last week's scare against the Bucs, the Bears will be out to prove that they are legit. It is going to be a long afternoon at Ford Field for Kitna who has no running game to take the heat off of him.

13) Cincinnati +2.5 over DENVER - I don't understand this line; Denver beat the friggin Cardinals last week...the ARIZONA CARDINALS. Palmer was embarrassed on Monday night against a bad Colts defence - he'll make Denver's D look as bad as the Colts D.

12) ST. LOUIS -2.5 over Washington - The Rams are kinda bad - the Redskins are terrible. Washington's good game for the month came last week against the Saints. Two teams with nothing to play for, so I'll take Bulger over Campbell.

11) ATLANTA -5.5 over Carolina - the Panthers can't run the ball, so they'll have to rely on Steve Smith who can expect tight coverage from DeAngelo Hall (who finally got Terrell's goober out of his eye). We can only hope that Ron Mexico sits this one out.

10) Indianapolis -9.5 over HOUSTON - Manning is going to torch the Texans D for 40+, do you really trust Carr to score 30+? 20+? Didn't think so. Don't be intimidated by the number.

09) BUFFALO -4.5 over Tennessee - the Bills are getting enough big plays out of Losman to win this one - their D should be able to shut down Vince Young and a Titans' offence that was pathetic last week.

08) SAN FRANCISCO -4.5 over Arizona - the 49ers are thinking playoffs, the Cardinals are thinking about their next coach. San Fran plays ball control and carries the day on Sunday.

07) New England -2.5 over JACKSONVILLE - the Patriots getting points on the road? Thank you Vegas! Belichick has the Pats in playoff mode, while Jack Del Rio is still trying to get his team thinking about the playoffs. A big game by the Pats puts the NFL on notice. Tom Brady - big game? You know what happens next.

06) DALLAS -6.5 over Philadelphia - the backdoor cover scares me a bit in this one, but I can't go against my Cowboys. The Eagles won't be facing a mistake prone QB this week - plus, I bet on Tina to win the Hazel Mae Football League on yahoo, and she needs a big game from Romo and T.O.

05) MIAMI -2.5 over NY Jets - I'm looking for the Dolphins D to come up big against the Jets. Miami grinds out a win against the Jets in a game that, if it follows the script of past games in the series, should be a wild one.

04) SEATTLE +4.5 over San Diego - like I said before...its a hunch pick. I'm looking for the 12th man to show up at Qwest on Sunday. Hasselbeck needs to get it in gear soon...why not against the Chargers?

03) NY GIANTS -2.5 over New Orleans - this is it for the Giants...so I think they'll win in spite of Coughlan.

02) PITTSBURGH -3.5 over Baltimore - Everyone I have talked to likes Baltimore in this one...those same people loved Cincinnati to beat the Colts on Monday.

01) Tampa Bay +2.5 over CLEVELAND - did I say YUCK?

Those are the picks for this week gang...good luck in your pools!

RENEE WADES IN ON DREW
So this morning I told you all that there is no way that the Sox will pull out of the agreement with J.D. Drew. I emailed Renee to get her thoughts, since we know she has some good sources. From the desk of Renee this evening:

Prez -
I don't think that the Red Sox will abandon JD Drew altogether but they will at least reduce that huge $70 M salary down due to his poor health. Drew will have incentives to achieve the $70 M but it won't be easy. Drew is damaged goods. He'd be a slight upgrade over Trot Nixon.

Here's something to think about - Mark Loretta.

The Sox were trying to land Marcus Giles who went to SD. Mark Loretta has been holding out hoping to come back to Boston. He's being courted by the Yankees and Reds or Phillies.
The Sox are thinking about re signing Loretta. Don't bet on it happening. Loretta will go to an NL team.

Renee

There you have it, trust me on this one. If Renee says the Sox are going to sign him - count on it...she knows. Ok, so it wasn't a ringing endorsement of my opinion - but at least she didn't tell me that I was nuts. Have a great night peeps.

Hazel, I hope things are groovy in your world.

Song of the Night on Hazelspeeps - my pal Renee made the call and it was a great one. As I told the peeps on numerous occasions, as far as I'm concerned - Renee has carte blanche and calls her own shot.

See Renee's last entry.
